My top show ever in my home town DC. It was a surreal day for sure from nearly getting busted in the parking lot and being saved by people I didnt even know. I was splitting some shrooms for my friends when I was suddenly faced with five or six men in shorts and black tee shirts asking me what is in your hand, i dropped the shrooms in my pocket and was preparing to run when a scruffy hippie in a skirt came dancing over and got between me and them, he was talking crazy till he leaned in and whispered walk away and I did just that. As i came out from the line of parked cars a VW van rolled by real slow, door open an they said get in I wasted no time and jumped in and we rolled away. I didnt know them all they ever said was that was a close one brother we were watching and we won this round you better get going and dropped me near the venues doors. I ate all my shrooms and dosed and was so freaking high. Heady days on the tour of a lifetime then Brent died and the band was never the same .

+jonathan holland That's a pretty awesome story. I'm pretty sure I was at that show too, but nothing nearly as notable happened. Thanks for the recollection.

That's funny....our buddy Carmen got busted in Atlanta in the lot smoking..missed the show salted away in jail....his girlfriend had to raise bail money to get him out ...other buddy Ed was quicker on his feet and took refuge in someone's vw bus and avoided capture. That night they played the 'Weight'....'I saw Carmen and the devil walking side by side' ...we burned him him a copy of the show. Poor dude spent about three days in jail for getting stoned.

That whole three days was pretty magical. Loose Lucy got busted out the night before. In my mind the whole run of shows blends together into one long show. There was an area of hotels near the Capitol Center which just got overrun with deadheads. The weather for that March weekend was really nice and these shows were like the first real breath of spring. I remember leaving Buffalo on an Amtrack and by the time we got to DC there were about 30 of us going to the shows. Great times I wish I could go back to again.

This was the apex of my touring experience. This and the next night. The final night i got booted to the hall, but it didn't matter. I have never before or to this day seen even the people working there at the concessions dancing and slapping time with all of us during Sugar Magnolia. I still go Dead and Co. to this day, but THIS was the zenith.

Being a lifetime Deadhead, but born in 1980, I *just* missed them. I had plans to go tour once out of high school. Well, that didn't work out, but I found Dick's Pick's, then later a whole community of tapers on DAT then FLAC, thank god the music was preserved, I'm moved beyond belief even tho I never stepped foot into an original pre-'95 "grateful dead" show. I won't mention what my feelings about JM stepping in for Jerry or Phil not being on board with it. But you can probably put them together...But honestly "the music never stopped" trumps all that BS. No matter how upset I was. The man can play guitar is all i'll say, but I just don't like his stage presence, weird faces during solos that feel fake sometimes and the fact he hasn't learned enough songs yet for my (Now super high) ticket price. But for nostalgia, I cannot condemn any fan for going to see dead and co. The fact is if they play close to me within an hour, i'd probably buy a lawn ticket just to see bob and mickey and bill. Phil's bands haven't impressed me too much either, I remember the weird days of trichromes, ratdog, and phil and phriends.. At least things are better now/ Head for life o/

I was seeing shows at that time, very young in fact, and the sound was amazing. Huge presence and it sounds better than any recording. There was always an excitement and Jerry was commanding. His melodies were so reassuring and hopeful of beauty as a predominate force in the world. After sadness day, I saw the first reunion and it took three lead guitars to make up for the one monumental creative soul, the hard driven child of gods.

First show with Keith, debut performances of Brown Eyed Women, Ramble on Rose, One More Saturday Night, Comes a Time, Mexicali Blues, Jack Straw and Tennessee Jed. As well as Jerry’s debut performance with a MIDI. Fortunately, I saw it all.

Nothing better than listening to an entire show like this out loud at work. Most guys can handle the "regular" tunes. But it's when deep into drumz/space that I get the biggest smile on my face as the inevitable shouts of "what the he'll are you listening too?" Or my fav..."was that a xylophone?!?!"...
    Yes, a xylophone, absolutely.
Grinning ear to ear with memories like this.

The Grateful Dead ARE Americana. I wrote a lot on the topic previously and Weir needs to win the Americana award here real soon with Barlow and Songwriters hall of fame award. They should get that, too. You guys do it. Send a long, detailed, researched letter with links to audio and video. why not? someone needs to make the point of nominating them. They will tell you that you cant nominate someone because you are not on the board or a voter. but just tell them you nominate them anyway and send a nice letter. go for it if you know so much about how it will be remembered, then you decide. I agree with you. I hope others hear what you said. you could say that in front of Weir if you want to. Ask to give a speech. you wrote the thing. Go for it. you seem like smart ambitious deadheads. I only work for Hunter/Garcia and I think they fired me

the 3-26-90 knickerbocker show has a super black throated wind in it. you could just talk about that one song, that one performance and get those guys those awards. that's beautiful. i'd for sure mention more but I would add that in comparison to a typical original lyric black throated and alternate lyric black throated. that's 3 versions now. they are all good. please don't make me do it. call your friends. weir should win really soon okay?

Greg we were probably standing pretty close to each other cause I was there as well and whenever I went to a show I would always, always ,always be where Jerry was right there in front of him and Brent. They knew and they knew me. Didn't matter if it was in CA at Henry J. Kiser or Landover, MD. Hell we may have smoked one together cause it was being passed around as usual. I even remember when Bob forgot the lyrics during Jack Straw. Great show. Damn I miss them after Jerry died i never saw the Dead again , want to remember the Dead as the way I saw them from 76-95. Great show. I watch them all on youtube now because i was two years old when this show happened. But i finally got to experience the real thing, at least in its current form. I went to Alpine last week for dead and co. and now i have some perspective and memories in watching these old shows. The jam before drums was real cool, whole band just seemed locked in. Jerry looked/sounded stoned as hell during revolution lol but that one surprised me as an encore... i don't look at setlists before i watch. Awesome china cat--> rider and terrapin jam just went on and on. I've always been a big mydland fan and i dig easy to love you, some sweet chord changes in that song. Thanks, peace and love to voodoo... if it weren't for your channel, i'd never get to experience all of this. Also want to say the interaction and good vibes among this fanbase is really inspiring... i met some great people last week and am still talking about the Alpine shows on facebook with some folks, the music is outstanding but sharing it with other fans is the best part. I'll see y'all down the road!

Some thoughtful soul made up stickers that said "Phifty!" on them and everybody in the lot was getting decorated with them. Great buzz in the crowd after the Loose Lucy bust out the night before. So much energy, with the boys delving into the catalog over the past year. Great fun! Revolution was a treat, but the Terrapin was a standout obviously. Feels like just yesterday.

The Jerry guitar horns are jumping out at me more than ever. The sound was during many of my shows but if you go back it was free and far between. That 90-92 sound on those special days. Best of the best fun

I was there. Plus the other nights too. Capital Centre shows were good however the outdoor venues were always my fav. Merriweather Post Pavilion was awesome and a bit more intimate than RFK Stadium shows. Least favorite venue was Baltimore Civic Center. Still those were most excellent too dude.

The East Coast shows from 1985 and up were stellar rising.
JACK STRAW, BLACK PETER, tunes from that genre and all tunes, took on a new quality. I never heard GARCIA sing anyone of them the same from the East Coast shows. The audio on SUGAREE is clear and distinct. The drums are through and LESHS' bass is clearly audible.

I read in one of the many band biographies that this Terrapin was a shocker for the entire band, except maybe Jerry. They had become accustomed to a certain number of repeats on the ending riff and then the drummers would rise up and head into their portion of the show. Imagine their gleeful surprise when Jer decided to ad lib for another 5-6 minutes creating some of the most inspiring call and response improv in the band's history. An old dog sure can teach the younger dogs new tricks. Thank you all for helping to create the world of sound and inspiration. Camera ops, lighting design, sound crew, band, and of course audience; you are all the most important organs in this living organism we know as Grateful Dead.

My new favorite past time is to break out my coloring book and put a Dead show on UA-cam and color away. I just finished a page as Throwing Stones came on. The last show I saw was 7/7/89 in Philly. I look at Bret playing his ass off knowing it would soon be over for him....Sad. I also just realized it's 3/14/2017 and tomorrow will be the 27th anniversary of this show.

Grateful Dead Merchandising sold this show as a 3-cd set w/ proceeds going towards the "Terrapin Station music project". Of course, I bought a couple copies...A well-intended pipe dream!
Excerpt below from MTV in 1998:
Grateful-Deadheads may have to wait longer than they thought for the grand opening of the ambitious Terrapin Station museum project, dedicated specifically to their favorite hippie-band and its legions of rabid disciples.
Nearly a year after the announcement of plans to build a $40 million multimedia-shrine to the defunct, San Francisco-based psychedelic-rock group, a location is still not secured and a tentative ground-breaking date is not yet penciled in.
As it now stands, the project -- which was originally expected to be completed by the end of December 1999 -- might not even get underway before the new millennium, according to Gary Lambert, editor of the Grateful Dead Almanac, the band's official newsletter.
