Goodness me, that was a blast from the past. So good to hear some of my former colleagues. Sadly, I think at least 12 of them are no longer a drain on the BBC pension scheme. Thank you for posting this. Brian Empringham
Sorry, just found this. I presume you mean George Eason. Yes, I knew him well and worked with him. George became Head of Presentation for a while before he retired, but I am not sure that he enjoyed the job very much. Like me, he was happier at the microphone.@@RJE95
Great to hear legends like Mr Peter King, John Wing, Brian Embringham who has posted here also, Pamela Creighton and others. What excellent diction and clarity which is at a premium now unfortunately
Wow - thanks for sharing. Some great and famous names in the lineup there. They were still doing things properly when I went to Bush for the first time in 1981. No doubt at all, back then, that the transmissions were coming from London! RP all the way 👍
Good to hear these WS announcers again. Back in the 80s I worked with them as their Studio Manager on Newsdesk, RNR and SRU at Bush House. An era now long gone!
wow - takes me back to the missionary days when when we lived in West Africa . My father would tune in on the hour and it would crackle and fade then he would find the sweet spot as he re-positioned the antenna . This theme was probably the first music I heard as a baby !!
I was so hoping to hear a recording of my late cousin, Martin Gramger as he was a World Service newsreader in these time. I most certainly remember of the others named here, like John Wing, Roger Colling, Peter Reynolds, Brian Empringham. I was 24 the year these records were made. They had such beautifully spoken voice, and with superb diction. Shame things have lapsed all in the name of 'progress' and 'inclusivity'! We lived abroad, so Lillibolero and "This is London! and " Here is the news, read by..." are firmly implanted in my memory. Should anyone be able to upload any further snippets including my cousin, I would be so delighted to be able to hear Martin's voice again and play it to my children, who sadly don't remember him. Here's hoping!

Did you know George in the recording, by any chance?

You were one of my favourites, Brian.
Thanks Andy. That theme tune & "This is London" are so evocative, I do miss the "old" World Service.
The theme is called Liliburlero.
I remember and recognize so many of these names and their voices! What treasure the old World Service was back then.

Great to hear signature tune too.
The tune is the old Irish folk song "Lily Bolero". Quaint. 🙃😆✌🏻☘

@@user-rp2li7ks4e it is odd tha the signature tune for the news was an Irish anti-British political song: see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lillibullero

Are you sure this is 1979 and not 1879? Ah, good, old longwave.
Short wave, not long wave.
