If you are looking to join any level of marching as a percussionist, back strength is extremely important. Last season I marched Bass 3 and this season I'm carrying shallow-cut quints. For basses: Endurance is key. If your band is going to be doing a lot of parades and full run-throughs, buckle up. Basses seem light when you first put them on but will feel heavier as time progresses. I recommend practicing without stands so that you can keep your drum up on the field for longer. For tenors: Your upper back is going to be sore. This mainly is from the harness digging into your back. Newer models of harnesses are starting to solve those problems, but if you come from a low budget school, expect lots of pain. Tylenol is a friend if you think the pain is pretty bad, but if you get used to the weight from practice, it may not be a necessity. I would assume that snares are nearly the same as tenors. I have not marched one, but they have a center of gravity that is similar to tenors.
This was awesome! I've been been in four seasons of marching band and two seasons of indoor percussion and the fitness is ridiculous. My first two seasons of MB, the band director had us run in block for an hour and then in technique block, if ANYBODY messed up ANY WAY, the whoooooolllllle band had to do anywhere from 5-50 pushups, depending on how bad the screwup was. So when it was the first four weeks of band camp and all the rookies were learning technique and the sorts.... fun. Although, being fit is one of the greatest feelings in the world, because you can do whatever you want. :D People say marching band isn't a sport. LIES. ALL LIES, I SAY!
Thanks for all of these DCI videos! I'm in a corp that just started called Southern Knights. We are located in Birmingham Alabama and do DCA for now. 2015 summer is our pre-season to recruit, then 2016... show time! We have our first performance in two weeks! -Chris
wow, just tried some of those exercises...it didn't go well. If I'm going to do drum corps next year I need to start training NOW XD Thank you so much for this because if I had started with this stuff after move-ins (if I make it) I would die. About to go for a run right now. Thanks again soooo much :)
How much running is involved in Drum Core? I know at Gold Auditions they have you run non-stop around a track for an hour. How long/far do you guys run in Spirit?
A lot haha. We didn't go for an hour at SOA, but at camps we'll often do a 10 - 15 minute run as a warm-up. Eventually, we'll either increase the time or the speed that everyone runs for more conditioning.
I march at Northgate High school and we do a good bit of this, since my director (Alan Armstrong) works with the cavaliers. I love marching (: and great video!! thanksss
great video. so glad I found it. my son is doing marching band for the first time this year and he's a bean pole and was looking for some exercises for him to do to bulk up and build his stamina and your video was very informative but very entertaining as well. Thanks for posting it and I look forward to watching more of your videos. "banana noises" was awesome!!!
I marched euphonium this season and we are marching in the Phoenix Fiesta bowl and I was asked to march contra and I was wondering if you had any exercises specially for Contra?
Treadmills have a lot softer surfaces and flatter than a sidewalk. Basically treadmills are more forgiving. Also, I find that running outdoors is more strenuous than a treadmill.
I have a couple freshman (and upper class-men) Mainly in drumline and my baritones and trumpets who just can't get their horn angles up, I'm a first year baritone, and I can do it, why can't they? Do you have any tips of how I could get them a really good 20 minute workout during school so they can work on their arms, legs and posture with me?
Make sure they are using the proper muscle group. Most of the effort to hold a baritone at a correct angle comes from the muscles between your shoulder blades and your triceps. Putting your hands on the seat of a chair and doing triceps dips works pretty well.
What advice could you give m about joining the corps late, as in May 3rd late? They happen to be short on low brass players as of now, and I happen to know the caption head there. My first camp is next weekend. I know all the music already, but am I royally screwed? It's a DCA corps. Thanks!
I'm thinking about auditioning for the 2014 Crown trumpet line, and I'm pretty sure, they'll take m, but leaving your friends, family, and significant others at home while you travel the country... How big of a toll does it take? and how much free time do you get to communicate with the ones you left behind?
How should a tenor drum player (who doesn't own a tenor drum) train to get acclimated to carrying the drums? Is there a way to simulate wearing the harness? Like, a backwards backpack filled with weights?
Dead lifts, rows, cobra crunches (back-ups), and any ab exercises. I'm a snare guy, but having a strong back is an absolute must for any battery percussionist.
What do you do about nutrition during camps and while touring? What kind of food do they provide and how often do you get a chance to eat? I'm vegan and while I'm willing to make compromises, I'm hoping to minimize those compromises when possible.
Mariah Rogers so idk if you’ve already figured out the answer by now through marching a season or what but if you haven’t, here goes. all corps will provide meals during camps, and they are always very good and nutritious meals. All corps eat 4 times a day during camps and during the season. Also, most, if not all, don’t provide vegan meals. Mainly because it just doesn’t provide the nutritional content you need during the season. They do provide vegetarian meals, but not vegan
Just about all corps will let you check out a horn at audition camps for the weekend. For tuba/contra, you can bring a concert horn to audition on. They'll do their best to get you on a contra for things like visual, but do NOT bring a sousaphone for camp.
I like this a whole lot! Within a few weeks here I'm gonna post a video response (potentially. We shall see how things go here) about a similar topic you've discussed (Hint hint, could be focused more towards potential contra players!) Keep it up! M.S 2009, F 2010, G 2012 contra
What corps do you recommend I john for my first year? I fit I ran track and cross country, and did marching band in high school. I've had one year off now and would really, really like to try it this year. i wanted to try it last year but I just got out of high school and was looking in getting into college. I'm going to a community college right now so that's good. OK enough of my talking about my life story...what do you think? ooo and I still run :D
If I have asthma that gets worse with running, would I be able to do drum corps? It's something I'm kind of thinking about doing, but I don't know how many people in corps have asthma, and if so how they deal with it during the season.... Do you know people in your corps who have asthma? Any tips?
I marched two seasons of Open Class DCI with Forte and I have pretty awful asthma. I marched baritone horn. I kept my inhaler and portable nebulizer in my backpack. The first season was really tough, ambulance ride and passed out a couple times, but the second season was WAY better. DCI taught me the proper way to breathe and that has helped me immensely both with performances and everyday life. My suggestion to you is to check out breathing exercises and make yourself use proper technique when practicing. I don't know your position, but the Brass Caption Head would definitely have some exercises that will help.
+JustCallMeSteph do you happen to know the weight difference between a marching baritone and matching euph? I'm auditioning for crossmen and I really wanna March euph but I'm like 120 pounds and 5'11, so I have a small amount of muscle .-.
It doesn't. I've heard corps like The Cadets have had some freedays on Sunday and some members choose to find a nearby church to attend (Sometimes, it doesn't matter if the church is a bit different, as long as they teach your general beliefs, you should be fine). If you really need to keep up with religious studies, try downloading a Bible or bring one to read. If you happen to be Catholic, try to bring a rosary that you don't mind losing, and sit down before bed to pray. In the end, if you can't stand being away from your place of worship for periods longer than a month, you probably shouldn't do DCI. Hope this helps, even if its over a year late.
Start running and drinking water now. You won't be in as much trouble since it's DCA and you'll be rehearsing on the weekends, but you still wanna start a workout schedule ASAP.
Hunter Hoffman Try those no sugar Powerade they taste like medicine but it'll still replenish your electrolytes. You could always use those electrolytes tablets too those work well. But soda and very sugary drinks are a definite no
Those burpess are actually called 8 count body builders, but I like burpee better. All of those exercises I have done when I was in the army except the banana lol.
*"Banana noises"*
You are now my favorite person ever.
You whipped out those cymbals and I instantly fell in love with you.
I like that you used a song from Mulan...
David that's more words than I ever heard you speak in 2011.

We do this a lot in my band and in my yoga class's. I hate burpies. The one I have a lot trouble with.
All things I know and mostly don't do (except no sugared drinks) definitely going to start pushing myself. Gotta work on those Banana noises!
This video was recommended to Mr by youtube. I think youtube just called me fat.
Maybe you need to build stamina because that's mostly what the video is abt 😏
Thanks for all of these DCI videos! I'm in a corp that just started called Southern Knights. We are located in Birmingham Alabama and do DCA for now. 2015 summer is our pre-season to recruit, then 2016... show time! We have our first performance in two weeks!

BrickLogicStudios I have a friend named Jessie Evans in Southern Nights
BrickLogicStudios sorry I meant knights.
I’m in this corp for the 2019 season, baritone player. You still in?
I'm scared now
Im wanting to try out for dci in the future when im old enough but im 200 pounds and i really need to get in shape so thanks for the tips!
wow, just tried some of those exercises...it didn't go well. “Right Lola, tell them Lola.
You need to get in shape too”
I have a friend who made Spirit this year. He's originally a trumpet player but I think he's doing mellophone
Awesome! I tried out for Spirit this year, but sadly I didn't make it. So I'm marching Corpsvets this year.
Love the Mulan music you added! It’s one of my favorite songs from tht movie actually😂😂 you’re now my favorite person. You have my RESPECT BRO
I wish I discovered this sooner, but I'll get to work right away. This really helps a lot!

we didnt have any exercise days this year for marching season at my school. heck we just do a stretch then go right into drill.
What is the age range to audition drum corps. And what workouts would be for colorguard?
He is marching SoA again! and he tried out for Cymbals on Atlanta Quest :)
“Stretch, stretch, stretch, stretch, stretch... Oh my God” 😂
I marched euphonium this season and we are marching in the Phoenix Fiesta bowl and I was asked to march contra and I was wondering if you had any exercises specially for Contra?
2 questions: 1) do you plan on marching SoA again this season? 2) Which WGI line are you marching for?
Treadmills have a lot softer surfaces and flatter than a sidewalk. Basically treadmills are more forgiving. Also, I find that running outdoors is more strenuous than a treadmill.
A lot and I mean a lot if the stretches you do in this video, we do in my high school guard

Does this also apply to normal marching band?
The Mulan music is just 👨🍳🤌 *chefs kiss*
Anybody got any suggestion for people whose knees can't handle half of this yet?
I'm thinking about auditioning for the 2014 Crown trumpet line, and I'm pretty sure, they'll take m, but leaving your friends, family, and significant others at home while you travel the country... How big of a toll does it take? and how much free time do you get to communicate with the ones you left behind?
Thats funny, I know someone who did the exact same thing last year.
JD you probably know Biggs right?
i saw you in allentown. i wanted to say hi but my friends made us leave right away. your show was great btw.

try telling that to the oregon crusaders
Hey man, I'm trying out for SOA this year, do you have any tips for me? I'm trying out on Baritone.
how did it go?
I like this a whole lot! Within a few weeks here I'm gonna post a video response (potentially. We shall see how things go here) about a similar topic you've discussed (Hint hint, could be focused more towards potential contra players!)
Keep it up!
M.S 2009, F 2010, G 2012 contra
Thanks for the helpful tips Man! What year did you march Spirit?
I wore it on my back but maybe try "sumo style", it might actually help!
What about breathing block, how often do you do that in drum corps and how far do you go?
What corps do you recommend I john for my first year? I fit I ran track and cross country, and did marching band in high school. I've had one year off now and would really, really like to try it this year. i wanted to try it last year but I just got out of high school and was looking in getting into college. Do you know Brockton? Snare in 2011?
Yeah I’m not putting weights on a tuba
Hey! Is it the cover Rio from Duran duran on the wall???? I LOVE YOU!!!
HEY IT IS SIMON BELOW IT... WOW!!!!
Would you recommend this if you are going to do color guard?
I'm not jdfuncorps, but yeah
If I have asthma that gets worse with running, would I be able to do drum corps? It's something I'm kind of thinking about doing, but I don't know how many people in corps have asthma, and if so how they deal with it during the season.... Do you know people in your corps who have asthma? Any tips?
Keep any inhalants that you need with you at all times. Start with an open class corps to see f you can handle it
I marched two seasons of Open Class DCI with Forte and I have pretty awful asthma. I marched baritone horn. I kept my inhaler and portable nebulizer in my backpack. Wow I think I'll actually be okay if I can get my snare chops where they need to be
did you march spirit of Atlanta
How much running is usually involved in the audition camps...and how much should i start running between now and the camp which is in december?
YOU MARCHED SPIRIT. HEY! I sent a video to Spirit!
How does church work with dci?
It doesn't. I've heard corps like The Cadets have had some freedays on Sunday and some members choose to find a nearby church to attend (Sometimes, it doesn't matter if the church is a bit different, as long as they teach your general beliefs, you should be fine). We use all of those work outs for my band and then some 0.o and I'm in high school band lol! superman and banana is always the best xD
Is gaderade a good thing to drink after a peformance?or practice?
Wate is better and to get some minerals back just eat a bannana
A. Rodriguez thanks that really helped 😊
I will hopefully be marching Music City 2013! :D About how long can your horn?
Start running and drinking water now. You won't be in as much trouble since it's DCA and you'll be rehearsing on the weekends, but you still wanna start a workout schedule ASAP.
IS THAT ONE OF THE SONGS FROM MULAN!?!
I marched 2011 and 2012, soon to be going on 2013 :D
Is Gatorade included in sugary drinks to avoid?
I would say yes. Water is probably the best thing to drink. Milk would be a sometimes, and pop and juice is a no.
Hunter Hoffman Try those no sugar Powerade they taste like medicine but it'll still replenish your electrolytes. You could always use those electrolytes tablets too those work well. But soda and very sugary drinks are a definite no
You are funny dude. Love your style.
IT'S THE BIERNT SONG!
