Hi Joe. I want to start by saying I love your channel and I pretty much watch all your videos. But this ranking list of solar panels is not even close. Of the brands you mentioned, REC Alpha is clearly the best of the bunch; way better than the other three. The other 3 are almost arbitrary and most likely ranked regional price per watt (value). You’re missing Panasonic, Sun Power, and Solaria which are all superior the Qcells, Aptos, and SilFab. Warranty, efficiency, temp coefficient, and ability to handle shade. I personally think Panasonic is the best panel out there because it’s literally identical to REC Alpha which would otherwise be a tie. But with Panasonic’s All-Guard warranty and diversification outside the solar industry, they cannot be beat. As much as I hate the way Sun Power treats their installer network and homeowners, they still make a very high-end panel and cannot be left off this list (even if you don’t offer them). As someone who has been in the resi solar industry for 16+ years, to me, solar panel rankings really don’t matter much. I’d rather take the lowest ranked solar panel with Enphase microinverters over the highest ranked solar panel with SolarEdge or any other string inverter. It’s kind of disappointing that Enphase is the only real player in the microinverter market; I’d love to see some new manufacturers break up that monopoly. I went to RE+ this year and there’s a lot of up-and-coming microinverter companies there but Enphase probably still has a 99% market share for micros. That would be a great video.
whats the difference between string inverter and microinverter
@@dingchunlong google it?
As a DIY person, Panasonic will not honor their 25 year warranty unless a certified installer installs it. Perfectly reasonable and logical.
Which Panasonic is the same? Just looked and the Panasonic All- Guard Warranty is 25 years but so is the Rec Alpha Pure R?
Hey would love to connect with you learn more about what you know. I’m green as mint coming into to res solar
Will you be doing a battery comparison like last year as well? Or have you already done one and I've missed it?
I had 28 360 w sil fab panels installed in 2022 . All I know at this point is the black Sil Fab panels look better than any other panels in my neighborhood
Omg, too much pep talk but lack of specific infor, like price, performance comparison, durability, you can cut 50% of your unnecessary words and save me from the boredom, cant stand the rest of the vid.
We installed Solaria PowerXTs (400w) in 2021 based on the design - still to this day I have not seen any other panel without busbars, other "all-black" panels seem to just be painted over.
Hi Joe ,
Can you please make a video for Freedom Forever 400W module ?
Can you do a video on "all weather" solar panels. I read somewhere that there are some that perform much better in a snow environment.
Hello Joe. Does your company provide service for homeowners in Maryland. It's not on your website and makes it difficult to contact you. Please advise.
Do you have any reviews or comments on Hyperion solar panels HY-DH108P8 400W?
Thanks, you've obviously researched a vast array of Solar Panels and produced a vlog with a wealth of information, covering topics most people haven't even considered.
Unfortunately, I live in the UK where you might say there is a shortage of sunshine...!
I have yet to find a channel over here that can provide such information.
I hear you, though I'm in the NE US. I don't find as much value in solar panels designed for hot climates and ample sunshine. I'd rather hear about how well panels perform in less than optimal sunlight. One of a couple reasons I'm looking closely at the REC panel: I don't know if it makes a difference but REC began in a northern climate, Denmark. Good kharma if nothing else.
(edit to add: I'm currently looking at bifacial panels for just the reason I stated; they theoretically (and anecdotally) perform in the lower light of winter when we need it most)
@@ChuckD59 Cool climates also have their advantages, as they reduce losses from overheating of the panels. In hot climates, the decrease in efficiency due to ambient temperature can be up to 20-25%. Therefore, in cold climates, the optimal angle of inclination or even a tracking system comes to the fore.
1 million British homes have SOLAR we have enough sunshine.
I have 17 Aptos 440 wat panels. So far it’s been really good for me. They are producing well and I am extremely happy with my purchase. I would recommend Aptos product.
Anyone familiar with Aionrise 360W panels?
Wind rating is important but so is hail damage rating. This should be discussed more often.
I am curious what specifically changed to decrease Aptos from #1 to #2?
Is the REC panel actually manufactured in the USA?
Nothing changed with Aptos. The REC product just got better.
@@SolarSurge OK, but what was it that improved?
Thank you for an excellent presentation. We've got an architect working on our retirement (i.e forever) home plans and want to make sure things are optimized for the best panels and their size. These ones look great.
I want to use metal- framed panels as a portable system, rather than the flexible panels.
Is there a way to select 2 different size panels that will nest for storage? Back to back?
Ok so the best solar Panels for you are the qcells?
Hallarious! I love the marketing that companies come up with. "Quantum" (so over-used, almost as badly as "innovation" isnt a "technology" per se, rather a different way to fab cells. In fact, Im pretty sure capturing back reflected radiation isnt even pattenable (or if it is, it's all the way back to very early days by the researcher who developed it). However, my absolute fav marketing to-date is Enphase's "Sunshine Backup". They sell THAT, but wont sell an off-grid PV system.
Solar panel efficiency will change over the next 3 years. The Chinese have already created solar cells with 35% efficiency. They will start selling in the next 3 years. I expect the Japanese or Koreans will produce a 10kWh batter the same size of the current 5kWh batteries. If you can wait, wait for just a little longer.
What about the dust as a factor that can lower the panel productivity? How do they performe at high temperatures plus the dust after a dust storm which are very common in the Southwest Texas? Thank you for your videos and content, I'm new to your channel and really enjoying it! Thanks!
Dust is not really a factor as each solar panel responds just about the same way. However, for extreme hot temperatures, REC is the clear winner.
IMHO All manufacturers say they are top)) However, from my own experience, I do not see the need to overpay for a tier1 financial rating. As for me, the rating can look like this: Jinko, Canadian, Ja, ZNShine, AstroEnergy, Luxen, Seraphim, Trina... and a dozen more or less equal quality panel manufacturers))
Prices would have been (extremely!) useful. I know they change, but it's still good info to share...
Hi Joe, thank you for every information you depict, would like to talk with you!
What about Solaria??
When are we gonna get some 600W , 45v open circuit panels?
Also you do not cover the NE? I was just at your website to book a call for my project but do not see my home state!
Well presented.
SunPower lost control of their manufacturing when they split into two companies. It’s hard to get ‘SunPower’ modules. Maxeon solar will be selling their modules as both SunPower and to distributors
I actually like this development. I think Maxeon solar modules paired with other industry-leading solutions like Enphase, micro inverters, and other leading battery systems will create greater value for system owners.
@@SolarSurgeI spoke with the SunPower rep at RE+ and he was talking about First Solar’s new module that SunPower will be white labeling mid/late 2023. If SunPower isn’t manufacturing anything do you believe they will continue to be a market leader?
So what are the best panels for Michigan
So they make the solar cells and all in America? or do they just build them here?
Great video!
Have you heard of the Convalt Tango solar panels?
Thanks for the information 👍 and for us who aren't metric system savvy would you mind stating the Fahrenheit tempature as well 😀
Great information and great video thanks.
Joe, I have been waiting for you to talk about the Enshine solar panels ..... You have talked about just about every other panel .... Thanks
Hi Roger and thanks for writing in. I've never heard of the Enshine panels.
This is a very informative video, . I will be looking into a couple of these panels. Thanks for the time put into this and the detail.
Awesome videos, thanks so much!
Great job! I'm trying to get up to speed on educating myself on solar.
What about Modules from JA Solar, LG, Yingli, Longi and Trina Solar? Are there no Modules from these Manufaturers available in the US?
LG decided not to make Solar Panels anymore earlier this year. Otherwise they'd likely be top dog.
I got an LG panel system put in & online like 2 weeks before they announced that.
i just got 20 q cells!
17 Q cells for me
I’ve been shopping the market now for a couple months and can’t find good pricing for panels. I get these unexperienced sales guys that just drive me crazy. Can someone please recommend a company so does a good job, reliable and decent price point. Anyone pleasssseeeee?!?!
www.solarsurge.net
Sunpower
Thanks Joe. Articulate and knowledgeable as always.
Do a review for bifacial solar panels for ground mount
I second that!
Love these video. Unfortunately I had a consult with a solar surge rep about two weeks ago, he told me I was going to e-mail me and I never heard back from him... I am out in Southern California.
Hi and thanks for writing in. We had some internal reorganization going on here. Please email your bill to info@solarsurge.net and we will get you a quote today.
Can you do a video on SunPower please.
What's your opinion on Solar4America panels?
They are OK. I would consider them more of a generic brand.
Hi Joe what is your opinion about solar panels made by S-Energy? The newer panels have half cut cells.
I'm not familiar with S-energy. However, half-cut cells are the new state of the art. They are more efficient than traditional cells.
REC's are my 1st choice. I ended up going with Panasonic's evervolts. Very similar specs and lower price. No??🤔🤷
Which ever volt did you go with?
Older 360... I got 30 of them. 🤔🤷🏽
Great information, thank you
What about “Hyperion Solar DH108P8-400” or Hyperion Solar at all?
They are a relatively new player. Not in the top five yet
You got me excited thinking the Hyperion company owned by Oracle that made the Hyperion XP-1 made a Solar panel but it's just some Thailand company.
So Sunpower didn’t make it bc of price or quality dropped? I believe they were your number 1 for 2022
Their price was too high for the quality being too low. I used to do a lot of service calls for their micros
@@QE007 wow really! All within the past 12 months?
Joe thanks for the great videos and information shared. Just curious - why did you not include Enphase in your list? Thanks
Doesn’t look like they replied but Enphase doesn’t manufacture or sell any solar panels.
@@Unimportantrichard Thank You. Yes I researched at my end as well.
What about the Renogy 450W 550W solar panels?
I would consider Renogy more of a generic brand. They are fine for DIY projects though.
@@SolarSurge Thanks Joel, I get it!
Sunpower beats all
Not anymore
Did solar panels/installation increase after the new tax credit. I'm trying do a comparison of March 2022 and December 2022 to see of companies increase their prices
Good questions. The price of materials has been going up and we've seen prices on installation come up about 3-5% year-over-year. The tax credit increase and extension helped to offset this increase in materials cost.
Dealer fees and interest rates went up on loans
When will 500w pannels be available?
They are available now, but they are too large for residential rooftop installation.
@@SolarSurge might be worth for ground mount , kindly review them
Soltec panels can absorb up to an extra 15% from the back of the panel reflected from the ground if reflective gravel is beneath it.
And when would that ever be the case in residential?
@@jimmysmithjrjr See the Solar Fighter rooftop tracker from Soltec, If the roof was painted eg Silver? Thats when!
Joe, what about Maxeon solar panels?
I've heard that Maxeon (formerly SunPower) will be selling their solar panels to the general market. This is a much welcome change and I look forward to covering their product when it comes to market.
Did Maxeon say when they were releasing their panels?
@@relaxingmusicforeveryoneto614 Not that I know of. I will be following this closely.
@@SolarSurge 🙂
Where are the solar panels? Show us your testing instead of a talking head.
This is the second video from Solar Surge that I have watched and it will be the last for a long while. The volume of their logo/intro as compared to the rest of the video makes it unbearable. Balance the volume and I might come back. This is sad because I think they have decent content.
Fast forward? 🤔
@@robertgill9076 If I wasn't working on other things and having the video in the play queue, I would.
Unfortunately, when your hands are full, it's too late.
Has anyone used the Bluesun 700W bifacial solar panel-BSM700PMB6-70SDC?
$190 each
Wanted to place 16 panels on my florida home. Then I found out these panels are double! the price I pay in Europe. e.g. Jinka 405 Wp. With $0.14/kwh not worth the investment/trouble.....
Bifacial is for ground mounted solar.
@@erwindboon3845 of course, one is a 700wp vss a 400.
