Another point I noticed - the BFG claims that humans are the only race that kill each other. For whatever reason, giants don't do it. However, when they are put into a pit at the end, they do try to eat the BFG because they know they won't be able to go after humans if they're trapped. So I guess they would resort to cannibalism if they were desperate enough, but they prefer the taste of humans. Also, they probably like having a smaller giant to push around when they're bored.
Wonderful video!! Great choices. I've read Roald Dahl's stories since I am little girl and I always find different messages everytime I read them. Dahl was a very creative and imaginative author who was able to show that not everything has to make sense to be good, fun or interesting, and that dreams come true for those who act honest and kindly. Congratulations, great observations, I agree with you about Charlie and Willy Wonka's movies. There is a lot more I could say, but instead I want you to know you have all my support. Hugs from Argentina! Camila
How has no one commented on this? This was a great top 10. Thanks so much for doing this video. I'm getting a box collection of all the stories tomorrow. Dahl was a literary genius, in more ways than one.
The Witches movie changed the ending, remember? That was the worst thing about the whole movie. I read the book when I was little (and for whatever reason didn't have nightmares about painful transformations despite rereading the rather graphic descriptions in the scene - you know which one I mean), and was not expecting the ending at all. "Why is he...SERIOUSLY? Why did they change that?"
You're right, they did change it, and it does feel really tacked on and hockey, but I can understand why they did that, the original ending was a bit too bittersweet for a Hollywood adaptation
I guess so, it's just that I kind of liked that about the book. And I put that before finishing watching the video, so I'm just going to add real quick here a few points: 1. I am one of those angry Matilda fans that thinks it should be at the top of the list, so when you mentioned that you knew people like me would be feeling that way, I was like "Did you read my mind?" 2. I KNEW it! I knew Dahl was thinking of himself in the role of the BFG and I was aware that the book Sophie and his granddaughter were connected. And I also didn't get why he was called the BIG Friendly Giant, when he was actually small for a giant. Wonder if this was some kind of commentary on vegetarianism? 3. I really disliked the Spielberg version of The BFG. I know the book wouldn't translate that well to film since it's mostly conversation, but it's just not the same story and the characters aren't the same characters they were in the original. 4. I guess I should read your number 1 pick (not going to spoil it for people who haven't finished watching). I own it, but I still haven't read it. I've read a few of the adult short stories, though. Ugh... The Witches probably still holds a special place in my heart above all the others, just because it was the first chapter book I read on my own. I was five years old. However, I'm not sure why I got to read it, as I'm sure my dad would've given Dahl books to my sister (who's ten years older) and would have known to start me off with one that wasn't so dark. Admittedly I don't think George's Marvellous Medicine is actually that dark, but my version does come with a "don't try this at home, kids!" message.
That was also a great book, I just think that because of how unique and deep solo was is why I put it at number 1, many have also told me the same about the twits, which was also great
I'll add my support for The Enormous Crocodile. I read it to a classful of four-year-olds last year and it was so much fun to do different voices, although it was much longer than I remembered, especially for a picture book - it might even be as long as something like The Magic Finger. I remember another book I read to them was a Madeline book, and it was far, far shorter.
Fair enough, if that's you're favourite then good on you I've not seen the stage show, but I've heard it's very good, but I haven't had the chance to see it
It's really not good, probably the worst Roald Dahl adaptation, it gets points for being very accurate to the book, but the movie's tone and style is far darker and creepier than it needs to be, it doesn't look or feel good at all, most of the characters are miscast or just not played well, and Danny DeVito was clearly the wrong choice for director

Well, actually, some species of sharks sometimes kill each other. Some of them even try to eat each other before birth!

Chris Noble Damn right (to both points), I'm glad you liked the video, and even more to see someone who loves Dahl too
I remember having Charlie & The Great Glass Elevator on tape and I loved it mainly cause I felt the narration made everything sound funny
George: *Opening bottle of medicine* WHAT!
Still love the kids books even as an adult. My top 3: 1) Danny The Champion Of The World 2) Boy 3) The Witches
Russell Cox I
I understand the witches
As number 1

You should check out my 'Old VS New' on the BFG films I did two years ago, if you didn't like the Spielberg version

Roald Dahl actually hated The Witches movie so much that he told people first hand not to watch it!
The great glass elevator is honestly my favorite Dahl story
Who still reads Roald dhal? Matilda made my childhood
Iloved that video but i mite change going solo to number 2 and add the enormous crocodile
That was also a great book, I just think that because of how unique and deep solo was is why I put it at number 1, many have also told me the same about the twits, which was also great

The Enormous Crocodile was the first Roald Dahl book I ever read, so it will always have a special place in my heart!
If I made this amazing list I would include The Enormous Crocodile. What do you think of that book?
That is a good one, not one of my personal favs though
I noted that you were cut off before you were talking about the Matilda movie adaptation. I'm concerned. lol
with deaths and darker moments in the Roald Dahl Trade we must be heading into farthing wood teratory (sorry bout the spelling).
If i'm being brutally honest, I'm not a fan of the Danny Devito Matilda film, but I know a lot of people like it, so that's why i didn't say anything
HeadphonesUK in this subject of the author I have been in a discussion and researching details as part of my school work in my final year.
Do u know there going to be a new bfg movie
Yes, in fact I mentioned it in the video
And I've seen the teaser for it, looks ok so far
Why is this video so popular? It was made before I came into the show! Everyone knows this show only became good after I came about
I just thought something technically in charle and the chocolate factory they didn't sigh a contract so that's Mr Wonka can actually sue him
They did that joke in Robot Chicken
I think Matilda is the best RD book. I've seen the movie and musical AND read the book
Fair enough, if that's you're favourite then good on you
I've not seen the stage show, but I've heard it's very good, but I haven't had the chance to see it
Oh and BTW, cute avatar :)
Thx! Ya the show is really good
Thank you very much
If you haven't seen the show yet but are going to, disconnect it from the book in your head. You'll like it better if you do.
18:07-18:18 Tell that to Dahl’s will, in it he said that no one can make a movie out of it, because of his hatred for the original Willy Wonka movie.
Evidently, that didn’t work out, did it?
He was unsatisfied with how much of it was changed from the book without his consent.
Besides, his wife gave her consent for the remake to be made, and even took part in production.
Could you review books by Wilbert Awdry?
I might take a look at Thomas the Tank Engine one day

What was that thing about Matilda? Did I miss something?
Jkrowlin didnt write her books
How much roald dahl books do you have
Lewis Clarke Most of the ones I mentioned in the list, and the twits, the magic finger and revolting rhymes
What do you think of the Matilda movie

Granted I haven't seen Danny Champion of the World, and I've heard that one's pretty dull, but I can't imagine it being much worse

Well if you were a real dhal fan then you would know that giants don’t eat giants, it says that.

That one is painfully underrated!
