Bob, I enjoyed your reaction to Angelina. Toby Gad is a multi Grammy award winning songwriter and producer. He has produced award-winning hits for many of the biggest superstars in the music industry, including names like Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Demi Lovato, Beyoncé, and more. He has recently produced an album of his top songs called Piano Diaries. As co-writer, he invited Angelina to perform If I Were a Boy with him at piano, and with cello. Toby Gad, who co-wrote the song with B.C. Jean in 2008, is making an album of his songs and requested Angelina to do this song on his album.
It appears that they will be working together, an example can be heard in the newest song BAD VALENTINE.
Toby Gad is a big name in the music industry, and this seems like a strong positive for Angelina.
Toby is definitely enamored with Angelina’s singing. He definitely intends to help her achieve her potential. He’s hoping to have an LA concert with her in a few months. (I am unaware he has any similar plans with the other vocalists on his new album.)
Toby’s album was actually released last month. I found an article from last November in which he was discussing the project. In another article from February he mentioned some of the artists performing on the album. Angelina had not yet been selected.

Thank you Bob. We all struggle with words when trying to describe what Angelina does to us with a song. Angelina, Master Class performances with unequaled emotional delivery. No one sounds like Angelina. Autotune would be sacrilegious. We listen to Angelina because it is raw. She bodies every cover she does. Beautiful 😊♥👣
Also to add to why you feel her voice more, there is no cheating in the production. It's as raw as it can be, with enhancements. So the human voice comes through in it's real form. Other artists will edit pitch, enhance and the human voice becomes almost lost. Angelina is true, and enhancements are used for quality.

The word to me is "expressiveness".
Angelina obviously has boatloads of vocal skills but it never seems like she is using them to just show us her prowess. It's always in service to the meaning of the song. I've never experienced an artist who has touched my heart with so many different songs, often songs that I didn't really care all that much about. I can't even say how many times after listening to Angelina, I think, "so that was what that song was about." I think she is a person who is seeing more in life than most of us and expressing what she perceives in her art. Her originals are now the next step in that process. My life seems infinitely richer having discovered Angelina.❤
If you hear BJ Bean’s original rendition of this song, then you might say Angelina did to the cover what Beyoncé did to the original - reinvented it.
A cover only in the sense that what Beyoncé made was a cover of the song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, originally performed by Jean in 2008. Beyoncé's cover was that same year.
In this video the pianist is Toby Gad .. the Piano Diaries are a celebration of his hit songs. He invited Angelina to England with him to perform .. this is the sixth version I have heard. I am not sure if it is really a cover when a singer is standing next to the composer as they jam to create a different version of the song.

The fact that Toby Gad (one of the orginal writers of this song, back in 2008) had asked Angelina for this tells it all. He is playing the piano here and in addition to that he has filmed and produced a more "poppy" version with Angelina as well. In fact that version has the same vocal recording but different music instruments which, in combination with total different images, gives that video a complete different vibe. They are both wonderful, but this is the version I like more (has nothing to do with Angelina, it's just a matter of tast). It's amazing how Angelina is succeeding in surpassing herself with every new song she sings. There is at the moment one other singer I follow, which is impressing me in the same way: Lucy Thomas from the UK. They are so different and yet both so incredible gifted. I believe what they do goes beyond "talented". It is more: they are gifted with unbelievable vocals. For them singing is a natural thing to do, like breathing. And that sets them apart: when they sing a song it feels like a personal, intimate, conversation. O yes: I am sure they are working so, so hard to learn how to sing every song they take on as perfect as they do. But at the end of the day they can sing everything they want without too much stress for their voices.

Pretty much everyone seems to have a problem describing what Angelina does with songs, whether cover or original. One reactor Britt sid Angelina is just Angelinaring, that I think is the best description. I now use it all the time. Angelina was said in an interview when she was around 8 I think, that she goes to a different beautiful world when she sings. It shows.❤❤❤❤👣
BC Jean co wrote this with Toby Gad and she was the original singer. Toby is now working with Angelina on new material with one song introduced at a private event "Bad Valentine". I loved this wonderful reaction, thanks Bob. You freeze... endlessly listening to her wonderful and powerful voice with her incredible low register and admiring her fantastic musical sensitivity, even the simplest song that passes through her hands becomes fantastic. She is simply unique and with a wonderful melodic perception. This interpretation (not a cover for me) with one of the authors of the song (Toby Gad) playing the piano, is curative for the your soul and the soft background accompaniment of the piano and cello give her a beautiful silky backdrop, until that wonderful whispered final phrase "... but you are just a boy".💛🧡❤

Well, is it possible we surprisingly still eye witnessing a young prodigy? Maybe, not a child prodigy but a prodigious teenager who go well beyond the Technics and maturity of many singers ; not just Her age, but many others in their 30s or 40s. It's very difficult to guess what She would bring up in the next decade. Amazing. The sole thinking on this give me chills...no doubt She is unique. .....

There is another version of the song. It’s the same vocal track, just different more contemporary instrumentation. In the video for thie alternate version Angelina is walking through the streets of London wearing a hoodie. The stripped down church version however allows you to hear the details in her voice more clearly.
Angelina and Toby Gad performed this song at two events in London in May. This recording appears on Toby’s Piano Diaries album, also released last month. Angelina is a guest on the album performing the song.
I believe this video and the video for the other version were filmed while they were in London for the events. The church is just a setting for the video, not a live performance. While at the church she did do a live short of All Of Me that she posted on Instagram or TikTokj.

A world wide famous german musician and producer now residing in the US. In the early 2000 he was working in New York with a young songwriter by the name of BCJEAN. She's the one who first performed this song. Then in2008 he proposed it to Beyonce who begged him to have it. Instant hit for that time. Angelina was only 2yo at that time. Matter of fact Toby called Angelina to reinterpret it when he launched his Piano Diaryes Project at the Andrew Lloyd Webber Palladium theatre in London last May. They're now collaborating on new material. Bad Valentine is the first song they dropped. 👍👏❤️👋

Some facts... Brittany Jean Carlson, stage name BC Jean, is one of two who wrote this in 2008, the other is Toby Gad. She wanted to release it on her own, but it went a hit for Beyoncé instead. And then a big international hit.Toby Gad the German music producer, wanted for this video, definitely to play the piano and especially wanted Angelina Jordan to sing the song.

If this is perfection you will have to prepare yourself for her next performance which will be even perfecter. It's like trying to imagine infinity. BTW, this song uses the term "boy" and describes boys. When it mentions "better man" it means when the boy becomes a man. The problem most women are having is,, they are looking for a man and only finding boys so they are thinking boys are men. Or, maybe they are looking for a boy and that's what they get. In that case, they have nothing to complain about. 😊

Just to let you know, the other co-writer of the song, BC Jean, was the first to sing the song as well as the person the song came from. The man that she was in love with had just broken up with her. Per Toby, he played it for Beyonce one day and she really wanted to sing and use this song, and the rest you say is history. Angelina and Toby have been working together for a while now and are creating new music for her to sing. I have the Beyonce album , i actually think the Beyonce version is really good ; with lots of anger and attitude . This Angelina stripped down version has more focus of the vocals and the story behind the lyrics , and is also very good . I also love her other walkabout in London version .
Although she nailed this song I think her intent is primarily to record and release her own material.if Angelina was not asked by Toby Gad to provide the vocals for this song for his album, she most likely would not have recorded it. She’ll still go her short instagram and TikTok covers but writing seems to be very important to her so it seems that she will focus on writing and releasing her own music. She had said that her album would be all originals. I personally would prefer that. I have so much respect for artists that primarily create their own music.

Hi Bob, nice to see you back with Angelina....you have no reason to feel the way you do. Beyonce did a really nice version of this song 16 years ago, no disrespect...very nice. Beyonce is a singer, Angelina is a Master Vocalist at the highest level, big difference IMHO! Never cared for this song until now. Now I feel the song and how it was originally meant to be sung. Just the way it is, give Angelina a song to re-create in her vision and here you go. Queen B has been replaced by Queen A in my opinion. Cheers, stay well.
