- CITV trailer, adverts, Matthew Kelly in-vision, Illusions, Thames Tom Edwards in-vision & handover to LWT via Thames Weekend News 7th December 1984. (Note due to copyright, the sound is muted on part of an advert for the song "Drive by the Cars" from 25.15 to 25.25 This was causing the video to be blocked in most countries including the UK).

As a kid I used to think Thames showed this "Thames Weekend News" mini-bulletin and preview of the main bulletin on their own time and then handed over properly to LWT, but fascinatingly what is actually happening is that at 17.15 the transmitters are switched from Thames to LWT, which is receiving a live feed from the Thames News studio. So although Tom hands over to his colleague Steve most likely sitting in the same building, the route taken by the picture and sound signals from Euston Road to our screens was a very different one. Presumably by fulfilling 60 seconds of their quota requirement for local news at this 'dead' timeslot, they allowed more time for their own, more popular light entertainment content in the 6 O'Clock Show. Didn't leave LWT much time for continuity or promotions before the next scheduled networked programme, which - despite them having the final say on the schedule - legally wasn't allowed to start more than a couple of minutes after the published time of 17.15...
As I understand, the 'old rule' was that - barring unforeseen circumstances, like breaking news or a live event running late - a programme couldn't begin more than four minutes later than the published scheduled time, nor begin more than one minute earlier than the published scheduled time.
Someone/others may know better! ;-)

Never knew Steve Clarke presented Thames News in the 80s. Think he presented the last edition in 1992 though.
He had a stint on BBC's London Plus at some point in between that though.
