Love this... the whole reaction... and again this movie was the sanitized version of what apartheid was... it was worse... thanks again for the reaction
in 1990 my uncle was burnt to death with a car tyre and I don't think grandmother ever healed from the pain of seen her son laying there (in the street) toasted and lifeless. I was a very brutal death. I was 5 years old at the time but I still remember how traumatized she was. few years later, during the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission), it was discovered that he was falsely accused of being a spy (impimpi) and was killed by a mob in a similar fashion as Sabela. May Their Souls Continue To Rest in Eternal peace
True Story -Everytime this scene comes up when we watch Sarafina at home my mum tells us the story of how her younger sister who was 1 year old(1984)was saved by uMalume(my uncle) from a burning house. The neighbor was a cop and his daughters loved my aunt so they used to come take her to go babysit,so one afternoon unexpectedly a mob came and threw petrol bombs at the neighbor's house because he was being suspected of being impimpi(snitch),my uncle literally broke the window and got inside the burning house to save his baby sister, life was difficult for black folks who were cops back then.nobody trusted their asses
I grew up in Vaal that is south of Johannesburg its an area that includes Sebokeng, Sharpeville and Boipatong amongst others. That scene of Sabela burning was a common occurrence around here between 1990 to 1994. They used tires and petrol called it Necklacing. I was a young Teen then but that stayed with me even now. it was a very bad time. Its not something we wanted to see but we understood why it happened.
Regarding Sabela living amongst the same people he turned against...remember the whole premise for Apartheid was to create division...Sabela was part of law enforcement..and was also a snitch to the S.A. government of the time which was white and even though he had some privileges..he was still black..and the idea was to instill distrust amongst every single one of us whether black or white...within each group there had to be no trust whatsoever because you never knew who was going to get you "caught"..So he was a snitch who was made to live amongst the same people he would turn against in order to perpetuate that agenda.... Even now there are still some elements of that distrust..that is why people don't want to vote for any other party save for the ANC because "better the devil you know".
I remember watching this as a kid... it traumatised me that all subsequent times I watched it I would fast forward this scene... 😂😂.. It was big in Kenya too 🇰🇪
Don't forget this are 13 - 19Y old kids. black kids like Sarafina always had to grow fast coz their parents were not home coz of work or politics and everyone helped everyone.
About snitching, after reading "Askari" by Jacob Dlhamini, I learnt that the accusation that a person was a snitch was a serious one and another misconception, even amongst us South Africans, is that people just became snitches. They too, were tortured and turned such that it was either you're a snitch or you're unalived. Some of the "snitches" were amongst the most loyal of comrades. Read about Comrade September, I think he's the closest real life example of what is depicted through Sabela. Sabela wasn't dumb, he was probably trying to survive. Being a defector was also a traumatic experience.
Necklace and back in the day's when it started they would have a box of matches for them to set you alight. When snitches increased to deter them, the culprit was given a cigarettes and somebody would ' assist' by lighting it for him or her.The idea would've been they committed' suicide'!How do you 🚬 with a a tyre filled with petrol, you wanted or chose to die that's the ' IRONY' if you will of the necklace. What part was when 🐊 came to Sarafina for medical attention,i cant find it.
@ Big Ralph, I'm looking at your recored reactions, imagine our reactions watching this movie as teenagers (kids) when it came out back then. We cried, we danced with the music. A roller-coaster of emotions for kids.
Here is something you might not have noticed. In the movie, Sarafina has a kid and that kid is Sabelo's kid.😅 FYI: Also in real life Leleti Khumalo(Sarafina ) was married to Mbongeni Ngema (Sabelo) But they are now divorced
Snitching never really guaranteed survival. The police would've/could've still k*llt you even if you snitched, and you will have put other people's lives in danger at the same time. The other side was: If you didn't snitch & the police let you go, it'll make your comrades doubt your loyalty cause they knew not a lot of walked out alive without cutting a deal with the police.😂😂 It was a messy situation

True, in reality it was far worse indeed.

You got me hooked to this series. I love watching your first reactions ✌🏾🇿🇦
The guy who was burnt is actually the brain behind the movie. The movie is his baby.
And he sadly passed away last year December in a head on collision car crash...
Ma ka lale ngo xolo...

Never noticed but was weirded put by the small boy that ran towards Sabela while walking home from church with Sarafina
No no no that child is Sarafina's brother what you talking about now
Sarafina didn't have a child, just young siblings and nephews 😂
Sarafina is the Winnie Mandela of the movie.
This movie should be played in every African American and south african school
It is played in Kenyan high schools
Your reactions are the best😂❤
And you get people saying "yall need to forget and move on "
So when people nowadays say that apartheid was better, this is how you know they're insane. Selective amnesia.
Me ready for Part 10 😅 your reaction are LIT
Thank you for watching!

I love everything you did with this movie!❤
sabela and sarafina were husband and wife but got divorced
He lived amongst them because, during the Apartheid era, people were segregated according to race.
The scene was cut, here is the one which shows how Sabela gets burnt 👇👇👇
