  • Great tasting Mangalore/Udupi Brahmin style Avalakki Upkari prepared for breakfast or evening snack in just 15 minutes. Comes with English subtitles.
Avalakki Upkari is commonly prepared during family functions in coastal Karnataka and special occasions during fasting. Easy to make yet loved by all for its great taste as a lightweight snack/breakfast. Do try this and let us know if you like the recipe in the comments section.
    Ingredients:
    Grated Coconut - 2 cups
    Green chilli - 1
    Salt
    Sugar - 2 Tbsp
    Coconut oil - 2 Tbsp
    Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
    Urad Dal - 1 tsp
    Bydagi Red Chillies - 3
    Curry Leaves - 8-10
Thin poha or Avalakki - 4 &1/2 cups
    Coriander leaves - 2-3 Tbsp
    Method:
In a big bowl, add 2 Cups of fresh Grated Coconut, Salt, 1 chopped Green Chilli and 2 Tbsp Sugar. You need to crush the Green chilli with hand and mix everything well.
In a small frying pan, heat 2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil
Add 1 tsp Mustard Seeds. Once they splutter, add 1 tsp Urad Dal and fry for few minutes.
Then add 8-10 Curry Leaves and fry for few seconds and later add 3 Red Chillies and mix with the help of a spoon. Once they turn slight brown, switch off the flame.
Add this seasoning to the above coconut mixture and allow it to turn warm.
Now crush everything with the help of your hand and mix everything well.
Then add 4 to 4 & 1/2 Cups of Thin Poha and mix again with the help of hand. Do note that If you mix with ladle or spatula, Avalakki will not mix properly.
Finally add Coriander Leaves and mix well.
Avalakki Upkari is now ready to serve. Always serve fresh for best taste. Quality cooking wares that I love and recommend. Many of these I use every day in my kitchen and in the videos as well. Thank you.

I finally made this today, as ordering good quality nylon avalakki took time. I have no words for how fabulous this is. Someone there is extremely creative in designing this dish. It is incredibly light on the system and has that old, mom-made touch and taste to it. I can't stop talking about this. God bless you Hema ji,. Pls create more of these.

It will not be soft without oinion . Lemon is also must to enhance the taste. This is similar to what we make ' Dadpe pohe .'

    • @CookWithHemaAdiga
      @CookWithHemaAdiga  3 роки тому

Adding freshly broken and grated coconut helps to maintain softness. Do not use Coconut stored in the refrigerator. Lemon is not something we use here in Udupi/Mangalore for Upkari but from the comments, it looks worth giving a try. Thanks for your thoughts.
