The skull with batwings usually symbolizes death by disease, that the person died of a fatal disease of the time like small pox, TB, the plaque, yellow fever, etc. Some you will see might have the image of a child or cherub with batwings for the same reason but meaning it was a child that died of a disease. A lot of contagious diseases back then weren't understood by the general public (even if doctors did) and they always used symbols like that to signify that the disease sort of 'came in on wings' and flew off with the person's life. This is how the general public understood it, it was like something supernatural to them.
Tks for the information, could you send some refs about this, please? Im brazillian and couldn't find anything about skull with batwings in tombstones but I thought it very interesting.
@@brunarastelli7433 He's on the ball the man died of a snake bite, well died eating his lunch at work after being bitten by a snake, and yes these strange markings on the grave are code for this commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Aidan_Church,_Billinge,_Grave__-geograph.org.uk-__574286.jpg
Beautiful graveyard. I’m always excited to find those in California which is rare. We recently had to travel a ways from work to perform a burial at a graveyard. It was hand dug and actually 6 ft where normally we go 4ft using a backhoe. He was lowered using straps. The graveyard was from the Victorian era. Great video.
I LOVED the beautiful headstones there, and the environment where they rest. Such beauty and tranquility. Rest in peace, all who rest there... you are not forgotten.
Another great video, I was thinking maybe the church had been moved and the numbers were to show where each stone went. The same numbers on the opposite side got rid of that theory. It’s very sobering how many children died in years gone by, life must have been so hard
Could the numbers along the wall of the church indicate the section of the graveyard? A map of sorts for locating gravesites? The church & graveyard are beautiful. The Smith grave is downright creepy 🦇💀Thanks for another interesting video, Dan!
Yes it will be. I would say most graveyards have numbers and sections. I know the deeds to my mam & sons grave has them. Makes it easier for the grave diggers to add family members and correct problems 👍
This gravestone is unusual in that it is shaped like a coffin but all the other symbols were quite common from Georgian up to Victorian times. I live in the village and have heard the many myths surrounding this grave and commented many times on websites featuring it. Firstly the skull represents death. The wings aren’t of a bat, they are angelic and represent the soul being carried to the afterlife. The curtain behind the skull represent the veil we pass through from life to death and the snake coiled around the skull that is swallowing it’s tail represents everlasting life. These can be found in many graveyards up and down the country and are Christian rather than anything sinister or cultish.
Theres something about grave yards that makes you feel relaxed. Think the saying my mam would say 'it's not the dead that will harm you...its the living' has always stuck with me. I often would go to think and spend time with my mam but your head clears. You speak to people and watch the rabbits and squirrels at one with nature and peace.
The bat wings are just TOO freaky. Gave me chills. Beautiful church. I imagine the cost of cleaning and restoring the exterior is highly prohibitive. What I could do with Elon's money !!
Wow this cemetery is very fascinating from the numbers on the church wall to the coffin style crypt. I did notice on the headstones along the walk had a number top left on letter on top right. It’s all just so fascinating being American. 🇺🇸
LOVELY OLD CEMETERY I THINK THE OLD GRAVES ARE MUCH MORE FASCINATING THAN THE NEW ONES THERES SO MUCH MORE HISTORY GOING ON KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DAN MAY THEY ALL FIND PEACE🙏🌹
Thank you Dan for another awesome video. I loved the one that had the gate around the 4 Graves. Never seen one like the one with the bats and skull on it. You do a great job telling the history of the cemetarys/graveyards that you go to. Can't wait for the next video. Love from Georgia USA
I can feel it from here. Those tombstones are creepy, a hint of dark film on every tombstone including the church. All tombstones are alike in thickness. Interestingly so creepy. Love it.😊The trees, and surrounding bricks all have a hint of paint like black, even the grass looks dead. Cool.😂
Bahia is in Brazil! Love your channel, the best grave freak of the youtube, love your pacing and the tone of your narration, and of course the respectful way you do your videos. Great content, I am a grave freak myself down here in Brasil. Cheers.
In the wall at the side of the gate is the headstone of my ancestors John Liptrot and his wife Mary, although half is missing, he was the schoolmaster at Main Street school, they lived at the schoolhouse, he was also the clerk of this church.
First off I’m glad you didn’t get hit by that car wow that was close. Second always posting great interesting content. That vampire stone looked awesome. I’m guessing the numbers on the church showed where the rows were for the cemetery.
I love it when you put some information about the person on the screen, it makes it a bit more interesting. Or a bit of history about the church would be dead good lol.
Your videos are so interesting. I've been watching them quite a lot recently. For the fun, I say the vampires are real. I'm in the US so seeing this much history is fascinating.

The area just down from Billings is Winstanley. There is an old manor house there and they were land owners. It's now just a suburban area and some farm land - but that's where the guy (12:40 mark) is from.

I beleave the numbers on the Church are grave row numbers. If you stand with your back to the church and look out into the cemetery You should see rows
Sorry I missed the live, but is watching now, live in South Africa, so the time differences overlap. That is definitely a vampire grave, what else could it be👀 bat wings🦇 come on! 😅
It is said that George and kitty were not local and died by snake bites …. But who really knows … grave markings are found like this in other places. What seems macabre to us with the skeleton and bat wings could mean something else in the age of when this happened. I feel the story of the snake could be to cover any vampire legends of the time.
That was an odd grave. But how do they get two people in that one coffin? Or is that just an effigy of a coffin with the scarey emblem? It does not look right.
maybe the numbers on the outside of the church are an indicator as to where the grave you maybe looking for are ? . Try a video of the graveyard at St Augustines here in Pendlebury , the church itself is very interesting and there's some notable graves with stories to tell . I love looking round old graveyards and absolutely love your channel , keep up the good work
@@deadgoodwalks Dan it's a unique church , it's design is a one off in England i'm lead to believe ,and there was a major mining disaster in the late 1870's where over a 130 men and boys lost their lives and there's a lovely memorial plaque outlining events . It's little known outside the area and is known as The Clifton house colliery disaster
Dan an update on the disaster , it happened in 1885 and a total of 178 men and boys perished and quite a lot 60 + are buried in St Augustines grave yard
The numbers on the church wall could correspond to the Stations of the Cross. I only remember 14, but according to the internet there were actually some at 15. Maybe there were some pictures hanging there, or they were painted on the church wall.
The end handle of the vampire grave has a dogs head with the ring in it's mouth. The serpent biting his tail is an ouroboros or the "never ending circle" This church was rebuilt several times due to uprisings and war. So those numbers could be the stone mason marking them for the rebuilding process. As they are opposite the same number on the parallel wall.
Lol, I can't believe they ran out of room on the T Winstanley stone and put the rest above it. I carve slate for fun and I also make pet grave stones for friends and family, I ALWAYS trace out the letters very lightly before I carve anything. I hope that family received his stone for free 😂
I really wanted you to open the end bit of the vampire coffin, sorry! He could have kidnapped a maiden on a stormy night & taken her to his place of rest, held fast in his deathly skeletal embrace 😬😬😬
We don't have any deadly poisonous snakes in the UK. Our only venomous snake is the adder but I've never heard of anyone dying from an adder bite. It can make you unwell and hurt a lot but they aren't deadly.
The skull with batwings usually symbolizes death by disease, that the person died of a fatal disease of the time like small pox, TB, the plaque, yellow fever, etc. Some you will see might have the image of a child or cherub with batwings for the same reason but meaning it was a child that died of a disease. Surprisingly good condition for stones of 200 to 300+ years. Another excellent & interesting walk. Thank you
The Hewitt’s stone looked remarkably good for being 200+ years old!

From what I understand, during Puritan times, any biblical depictions were considered sacrilegious, and so a memento-mori was used as an epitaph.
