- For size control or invigorating an older overgrown Holly tree, severe pruning can be implemented.
Hollies are tolerant of being cut back severely. In fact, a mature holly can generally be cut to the ground and will regrow vigorously from its root system.
Ilex aquifolium (English holly) is a large, ornamental, flowering, evergreen tree or shrub in the Aquifoliaceae or holly family.
Can you show us what it looks like now?

@@gardeningtipsandmore Thank you so much for the update. It's beautiful
Sad I have to wait another couple months, but I am definitely going to try to cut my two overgrown hollies back. Someone said I’d kill them for sure cutting so much off, but I think they’re gonna make it! Thanks for the tips!!!!
Wow--cut all the green off! Dumb question but how does a tree live without leaves?
I have to do exactly this! Severe pruning of English holly.
I just did the same thing. Did you have any “water spouts”?
I have a holly that the top half of the tree got choked out by vines….should I literally just cut the tree in half to where there’s growth? It would mean cutting across the main trunks 3” in diameter or so.
Deer ate all the leaves off of my holly, have to prune it back and move it to the backyard (fenced).
That looks horrible what’s the purpose of
