  • Nick Reynolds (1933-2008) of the original Kingston Trio performs a vocal solo accompanied by Triomates Dave Guard and Bob Shane on guitars and David Wheat on bass. The song is a reworking by Irving Burgie of the American folk tune "900 Miles." Burgie is best known as "The Father of Modern Calypso," having written 34 songs recorded by Harry Belafonte, including eight of the eleven on Belafonte's landmark "Calypso" album of 1956, the first album ever to sell a certified million copies. "Day-O [The Banana Boat Song]" and "Jamaica Farewell" are probably the most enduring of Burgie's songs; he also wrote several other songs for the Kingston Trio besides "The Wanderer."
Nick Reynolds was the rhythm and the heart of the Kingston Trio, for a time the most successful and popular vocal group in the world and certainly a transformative force in world music. Reynolds' soaring tenor and supersonic rhythm strumming gave the high-energy Trio its musical foundation, and as this video attests, he was a superlative solo vocalist as well. Nick was also to the end of his days an outgoing and engaging man whose greatest legacy may well be his personal warmth and genuineness - and his ability to touch those of us lucky enough to have met him. Godspeed, Nick Reynolds!

Ah, I now see where Al Jardine from The Beach Boys got his inspiration to the song Lookin at tomorrow from.

+Invisible Drummer yeah- I always thought it sounded familiar - though Im unsure if I had actually ever heard this song either - I think - just like blues songs - there are probably a bunch of folk songs with this similar riff/melody....

As I recall, wasn't there a version of this on the soundtrack to "How The West Was Won", to which Davey and the Whiskeyhill Singers played a prominent part?

Boy, did I ever love this song by Nicky, and loved to try and play it with that glissando guitar break. Thanks so much for bringing it to UA-cam. Five deserving stars. Cordially, John

I adored this beautiful man. My parents collected every one of the Kingston Trio's albums and their music is my all-time favorite, hands down. Nick's voice was perfection.
