I'd love to find a 911 targa in a junkyard...amazing find.
encore un genie de restauration de pépite
the cheapest thing you will buy for this car is the car. good luck I will be watching.
There speaks the voice of experience!
It will be worth it in the end.
if he knows how to do sheet metal work he should be ok
@@fullfunk motor rebuilt alone will be 5k in parts.
They rebuild Porsche's all the time
Local wrench turner here in Greenville, SC. Great to see a local channel!
Glad to have a local here!
You got a screaming deal! Do what you want, It’s your dream car!
Love the car!!! Wouldn’t wide body it myself, but it’s your car so build your dream!
Needs to keep it ice green. Upgrade to digital gauges and lots of carbon fiber. Also a Whale Tail is a great idea too.
I can't wait to see what you do with it. Don't sell it. Depending on your skills and if you do all the work yourself you could easily bring this back to life. The engine on the other hand will cost a lot for a compleat rebuild. I would do a compression test and if good just replace the head studs one by one, all the seals you can without taking it apart. Replace the timing chain or at least replace the tensioners with hydraulic tensioners. It looks like the fan was already upgraded but its broken so you will need to get a new 11 blade fan. Also another common problem is the heat exchangers will need to be upgraded if not already. If you go wide body I would try to save the fenders if you go bolt on. Replacement fenders are very expensive. Unless you plan on going with fiberglass. You could do a budget hot rod build if you plan to keep the car for yourself. I don't know what it would take to get the stock fuel injection up and running. It maybe easier and cheaper to upgrade the intake manifold from a newer 911 and go with a standalone ecu. I have a 82 911 that I am back dating to a 73 RSR. It has a 996 water cooled engine that's going in it along with a bunch of other 996 and 986 parts. But I have had to put it on the backburner for now do to health problems. So I am looking forward to this project!
Jarrod VW +1 on the hydraulic tensioners!
late to this but crazy to me one could re build something so far out , this is great!
Brilliant. Rebuild it, to original spec, once you‘re done you have an amazing car, on top one you always dreamt of.
But there’s more: should you ever have a monetary issue a pristine, original 911 in the garage is a very fast sale to fund whatever you have to fund in that moment.
OK...just saw the latest video on this effort and had to see what you started with. Oh my goodness...what a remarkable job. Well done...
Also if you have not yet looked up Mustie1, he does a lot of great videos. However he has done a lot of work on old VW’s and even a old Porsche 911 that was flooded. Might pick up some ideas on getting that old motor running.
SCcarguy Absolutely, I have been watching him for years! Love his stuff!
The 1974 Porsches were produced BEFORE Porsche adopted the use of galvanized sheet metal (1975-1/2) so you have much more rust than the next year or two provided). Ice Green Metallic was a beautiful color-hard to think someone would paint it white! “Factory” ac was funky in those years. Generally it was added by the dealership. The nice thing about that vintage Porsche was how few specialized tools you truly need. The most exotic tools were a set of Allen wrenches! Keep in mind that these were hand built in those days so the fenders are never even. For example, the left front fender generally is closer to the tire than the right front.
Man im gonna watch all the progress on this beauty! She deserves to be restored! Awesome! 👌😎👍 p.s. if I where you I wouldn't wide body it! Keep it original!
cant wait a week . love it , that frame pulling tree was epic,
lrc works part 2 is up! Not long and part 3 will be around too!
Loads of classic 911s down my local scrap yard
very rough, but I look forward to seeing it transform.
Classic little targa, wide body yellow Ruf style 🇬🇧✌
Jason Smith 🤔🤔😃👌
Backdate it! Awesome video, can't wait to follow along the build! TRE Motorsports sells any backdate body panel imaginable.
Hell yeah! I'd focus on the performance and make it a poor mans sleeper porsche! Steel wheels and straightened out with a hammer! PLEASE get it off the trailer!
at least for $500 you have a great head start, most bare shells start at 5k, being a mid year and a targa its the least desirable which is a good thing as you can build it how you want and not worry about collectability, cant wait to see the build, Im building a 67 with a 2.2L from a 70
Russ Freer Thank you!
Lots of money to put back on the road but its a dream car totally understand.
$500. Wow! Can’t wait to catch up on the entire series…
Man that’s my dream car! Good luck in the build. I agree with everyone else, don’t wise body it
Wow that thing would be worth upwards of $10,000 in Australia
I would fix the rust issues and make the body as nice as possible. Then paint / interior like factory or (if different) like it could have come from the factory. To cut corners, if available, a cheaper/smaller but running porsche engine. If road legal, probably european look headlights/bumpers ? No body kit, you wouldnt race it, anyway.
I did know where a 84 or 85 turbo ? Was sitting A couple of years back, that was a flood car ! The person was trying to bring it back to life .I was told It was sitting parked on side road & a drunk sideswiped the passenger side, folded it like a piece of paper 🙂. Awesome build ,wish you luck! parts are going to be hard to come by ! Because the cars are becoming scarce & $$$ . Sorry couldn't help just a interesting story 🤘 Salute 🌟😎
Great videos. Just started following your stuff. Keep me updated.
Have restored and own several 911, 930, 914. You shouldn't wide body this car. It appears to be a fairly rare Ice Green Metallic. Restore the body to original. Hot rod the motor. Keep it more of a resto rod and you'll come out money ahead and with better resale value.
I like this guy, he is so amazing.
Six Teen 😊
Quite a challenge! The key will be getting parts at reasonable prices. Make sure to go to Hershey next April!
John Heitmann Thank you sir! I hope to make it to Hershey! I’ll be at Charlotte Autofair selling as well, well attempting lol I’ll probably buy more than I sell.
My Dream Car too
Great video
I subscribed this is a dream build for me too. Looking forward to the progress 👍.
Glad to have you! 😊
Can’t wait to see how this progresses. One minor thing, please stop saying “And uh...”. Thanks. Good luck with the build.
The Dutch Traffic Police used to drive these in the 70's, when we didn't have a speed limit yet. www.autovisie.nl/nieuws/hollands-glorie-te-koop-porsche-911-2-7-targa-rijkspolitie/
How cool is that!!
Hi can I ask exactly where you bought it from
id love to see a roadkill/ ratrod style build 911.
slade420 Sounds like a good idea!
Hi im a subbie, man l reckon you have an awesome car here for a project I wouldn't wide body these targas they have more respect just straight. I look forward to seeing the build.
Harrison Hunter Glad to have you!
instant sub and notif on. i really wonder where this will go. i wish you the best luck my fellow warrior.
Cuore Sportivo Thank you!
New drinking game- everytime he says " and uh" or " but uh"...
Wassup man love the content I’m also a automotive UA-camr from the upstate Greenville
Just subbed your channel excited to see you put girl back together 👍👍👍🇬🇧
Ok, two years of vids is good and bad. Good cuz I just subbed so I get them as quick as I want. Bad cuz that's quite a while from start to finish, imp.
HOWEVER. this is the definition of a complete refurb challenge, so BRAVO guys. This channel should hit 250k quicker than a line of cars appear at a free topless car wash.
Minor editing things that you will learn along the way. Sub'd and you will get a lot more for sure! Good luck with the channel and the builds 💪
Jesse Ambachtsheer Thank you!
I think the parts would be harder to find
Interesting channel with lots of potential. Please work on audio levels. Your voice level is too low, then the music is too loud.
Stan9106 Will do!
Great car but lot of work 🙄 good luck Porsche after market parts are not cheap.
REALLY support you man! I´m really tired of rich daddy´s boys making videos of millionaire builds on UA-cam. Wish you luck!!
Esteban A. Gaido Thank you for the support!
I wonder, where you could have seen those. "Sweet ! Awesome ! That is legit ! Dude ! Man ! (...annoying music starts...)
@@BudgetBuildz been a Porsche owner at the age of 16.. still have about six Porsches.. would like to see more on your video I think you got a great deal. Do not be discouraged...there's a wrecking yard I believe in Oklahoma and there's quite a few in California to find those parts
@@urgolf1974 ahaha, good one!
urgolf1974 “siiiiiiiiiick” 🤣
If you want to nail it, keep it stock!, good luck and looking forward for the next video. I think I still have the workshop manual for that model if you need it.
EUROREPUESTOS That would definitely be handy! Shoot me a message if you come across it! Thanks!

EUROREPUESTOS Thank you so much! This will help a ton!
Turn down the volume of your music,,,,, it is WAY louder than your voice!
agree, great video but please try to sound grade better your voice is really soft and the music way too loud
came here to say that...
+1
Turn UP the music 🤘🤘🤘
This is the reason that I came to the comments!!!
This is going to be awesome! Best of luck with the rebuild🙌
JR Garage Thank you so much!!
JR Garage I’ve watched a good bit of your channel the past few years! I really do appreciate the comment!
@@BudgetBuildz 911s, along with Corvairs (especially Corvair wagons) and Squarebacks, have the best snow and mud traction without 4wd. So I would like to see these set us like dune buggies or (gamblers?). for off road going, with big mud tires and some extra ground clearance; and posi.
Strip that car down till you can’t take anything more off it then put it back together...Look forward to seeing this…definitely don’t widebody it keep it stock, love the color.
Love the car. So much character. I would not wide body this one.
I agree!
Yes, for sure, doing wide body on this car will definitely detract from the aesthetic of it.
The widebody is the only way to go. Makes porsche tough looking, muscular not like the skinny jeans wearing cars!
Yeah, please don't do that. Keep it original spec.
:0)
Please dont the car Will be worth way more in original spec don’t give me wrong I love widebody cars this just isn’t the one
Please don’t modify. Stick to original specs. This will be a beauty.
Make it Eu specs and increase the value. Us spec bumpers are ugly.
nah he needs to wide body it ASAP
nah. too many stock Porsches around
I couldn't agree more. A car is only original once. Mess about with it and it's devalued in more ways than one. I cringe every time I see a nice car which has been "modified". When all said and done: they're not making any more of them.
And two years later you'd be amazed how far you've come. Brilliant 👏 👏 👏 you and your channel inspired me to have a go. Thank you Michael 🙏
Thank you sooo much!!! 😊😊 Great videos!
@@BudgetBuildz Oh thank you. I must have missed this. Did you what one of mine then? Jamie
Pretty cool. My feeling is do a faithful restoration as close to factory original as possible.
Ambitious project. My vote would be to keep it as original as possible. It will be way more rewarding in the end.
Don't listen to the haters, give your best shot and I think that it's a great challenge for you and a good experience too 😉
Engine will have head stud issues which is common on the 1974+ 2.7L. Bring your wallet to rebuild this motor. The rocker covers can be ditched for a cleaner hot rod look. I wouldnt widebody a targa. You can give it SC rear fenders if you must, but no real reason why. Inner heater tubes are most likely rotted inside the body. Body is also twisted, it will need to be put on a celette bench if you want the doors to close properly for paint. Some cars are worth saving. This car is not. It is parts at best. Dont walk, run from this car. It is a money pit. It is tags and title at best. Everything is available for this car, but the parts cost is higher then the resale value. And that is without factoring labor.
100 percent agree, he should sell it now because there will never be another chance to make anything off this car again, it's just too far gone.
Engine rebuild properly is around 11K$
@@gentrest6421 I'm having a hard time imagining saving that engine. Whenever I think about building an RSR tribute, I consider $25k for the engine to get a motor that's built right and really fits the car. It'll be interesting to see if saving ~$10k on this donor turns out to be worth it. I suspect that a straight, more complete donor might have been less expensive in the end.
By Yankee standards, this car has no real rust. Welders are cheap. He has $500 for a hot rod basis- build a hot rod and skip the overpriced Porsche parts this is not a platform for a purist. If he is frugal and does his own labor, he can build a fun project for $2000. Don't tell me he can't because I have. It's not the Mona Lisa it's just a junkyard car.
@@johnhansen4550 IF he runs something other than a Porsche engine it may be able to be done "inexpensively", however it will never be done for 2k, no one can do this project with THAT Porsche engine for 10k much less 2k.
FWIW and though I would love to see you do the flat six boxer - if you don't want to end up dropping a minimum of 10k - probably 20k on an aircooled boxer engine, you should LS swap it with the smallest ALL aluminum LS you can find.
Get yourself an external microphone, kind of difficult to hear when distant from the camera / phone. Excellent project, best of luck.
Peter Will do! Thank you!
and manage the music volume better
Great project! this is the first plastic bumper 911, I would say, keep it as original as possible! and it has AC wow! good luck!
Will be interested to see how you go. Brave choice, good luck with everything. Oh, and that original colour... yes!
Bless you for saving this poor girl from destruction! Can't wait to watch the rest of this series.
You have found a great base for your build there Michael. Take your time, this car definitely deserves a good build up. If I could suggest, make sure your content is more detailed in regards to the work you carry out, this should be a 20+ video build as it is definitely going to be popular, especially in Europe, where these cars are cult. Good luck!!
these cars are cult..... Good luck!!
They are cult everywhere! !! 😁
Good luck with the build! Keep it stock. Dont widebody it. Its a trend that slowly fades away. Stock cars especially this age keep their value. Think about it as an investment.
I want to watch the series, but the "and uh" is killing me
Russ M 😂 sorry! I’ll work on it!!
Russ M thanks for pointing that out, I’m half way through the vid and it’s driving me nuts too. Once you notice it, you can’t not noticit hahaha
He’s a new. I’m sure he will improve with time. 👍🏽
Good luck, I wish you the best, but when you start buying parts you going to learn the meaning of "the porsche tax"
You are a brave soul!!! The engine will be expensive to get right if it is a 2.7 magnesium case. However, it can be done correctly and reasonably, if you have some friends in the machining business. I've built a few 2.7 and 3.0 aluminium cases. Good luck!!!!
aWhen editing your videos try and normalize the audio as the music is way too loud compared to your voice, annoying having to turn the volume up and down all the time. Looking forward to another youtuber who is up for a challenge.
Jason Colcomb Thank you! I’ll definitely adjust that on my next video!
@@BudgetBuildz yeah, i agree, good video's so far and a nice project, but i have to keep turning the sound up and down the whole time. But otherwise, really nice :D
Check out Home Built by Jeff channel. He has a series you might find useful.
Keep it stock. I love the color as well. I hope to see more videos soon.
Love your enthusiasm my friend but just a friendly word of caution: Keep it original at all times. As soon as you modify it the value disappears and Porsche buyers will walk away. Even keep that original exhaust sound as its crucial.
In the Porsche world originality is everything and that will protect your investment. But enjoy the rebuild ..
at the beginning of the video you reversed that trailer like a sir man gj :D
panbacil I have to be honest I did it messin around for the video...I hook up to trailers all day long for a living 😜
Hell yeah. Not easy
Just subscribed and started watching this series and...I think you guys have a loose screw somewhere in those heads, but...I am curious to see how this will progress (got a whole bunch of videos to catch up). I think with patience and hard work this will come out great. Good luck and cheers from Brazil.
Awesome find! Looking forward to watching this build! Love that you’re going back to the green. But please don’t RWB body kit it. It’s your car, just seen plenty of those poorly fitted fiberglass kit videos.
This car had a hard life, she deserve to be saved, i hope your channel grow fast and help you in the restoration process.
Best whishes
Walter DIY Thank you!
@@BudgetBuildz you have passed the 1000 subscriber, if you post an other video of stipping process or junkyard walk around you'll reach monetization requirements very very soon
Walter DIY it’ll be up today ;)
Walter DIY monetization is definitely an added bumps but this is all for fun ☺️
I love the little car try to keep her original as much as possible
11:15 you are a brave man standing in front of that strap like that...
be careful dude!
😅 😁😁
Looking forward to seeing this progress. Love the early 911's
Allan Monaghan Thank you! It’ll be a lot of work but much fun and I’m glad to share!
Love doing car stuff especially diy with budget in mind. Good to see how things are done without going budget mad
Allan Monaghan this isn’t an early 911 lol
@@jimmygrant3212 damn sight earlier than my cayman. It's an older car than me, so in my book its early to me 😂
New to the Chanel, and looking forward to this build !! I can’t believe you got that for $500, it was a steal !!
I’m in the low country of SC, I think Alex Rebuilds is in your neck of the state.
$500 is a steal for that.
uno de mis favoritos el targa de los 70s un clásico de la porche, suerte con la restauración estare atento a los siguientes videos.
This is awesome. Your hopefulness is inspiring. This once beautiful machine is being resuscitated!
Good luck with your project. I would opt for an original look in stead of an easy fix with the wide body.
Behind the rocker covers: The teal green looks better than the white..
Did a 74 targa myself back in the mid-80s. Had a 4BBL Holley on it when I started. Also had the Sport-o-matic trans. Was a project. I now own 4 Turbos and a GT4. Lifelong passion.
Might be able to save the hood with patch panels 🤞🙌
Even for a halfhearted rebuild and assuming you are saving as many parts as possible, I think you'll spend LOTS of money on this thing.
If your estimated time schedule allows, I would recommend to completely disassemble that car and rebuild it from scratch. Otherwise it might not be worth the effort... And please, keep it as original as possible (eg. DONT widebody it) :-)
Whish you all the best, I'll follow!
All you had to say was “Porsche”, subscribed.
😃
You have no idea what you got yourself into, I have a few classic Porsche’s and many other , the parts are going to make this cheap build unrealistic, I’m looking forward to seeing what you can do with this , dig deep...... ya will need what ever spare change you can get.
If you value your time, sanity and bank balance you should quit whilst you're ahead and flip this car. There isn't a single straight panel that I can see, no interior and a drivetrain/suspension which will need to be completely rebuilt. You got a pretty good deal for 500, if it has a clean title it's worth 3 or 4 times that easily to someone who needs parts because this is nothing more than a parts car. By the time you get this running and driving you'll have spent far more than a good driver would have cost not to mention the hours and hours of headache involved in doing the work. Not hating, just talking as someone with a bit of experience finding a dream car and later realising it was far too gone to be worth restoring. Wish you the best of luck either way and just subscribed!
Swap in a water-cooled flat four or flat six Subaru driveline. It would likely be cheaper in the long run. And for extreme crash damage repair while saving panels, check out Arthur tussik's you tube channel
Only thing that looks ok is the windshield. Good luck ! :D
theshuff the rear glass looks good too! Doubt that the rear defogger is working, though!
The long nose would look nice, but I wouldn’t do the widebody. Perhaps a ducktail spoiler and keep the original lines? Can’t wait to see what you can do with the drivetrain....would be something if you got it running!
Take a shot every time he says "and ah".
Love the channel, love the build, but....."and ah" is distracting
i love seeing people saving historic cars instead of getting something newer or already fix
you must see rebuild "polskie porsche " on UA-cam.
Dokładnie....
Tks Andrzej! Great advice!! :)
Ugh those old Porsche's are really good at rotting away 😢
I'd stick with the exiting look. So many short nose replicas around. Original 911s will be rarer and more valuable. Definitely Turbo flares though.
Please DON’T wide body this car.... worth much more in original spec
