      @MargaritoTrevino Well there's only 233 episodes on that playlist, at the time of running the script, Hanson was out for at least 9 because of the baby. So 224 total being about 1.58x an episode seems in the ballpark, but you could be right. We need a supercut.

    Hearing that FFVII Rebirth has a scattershot open world with a bunch of weird minigames that don't cohere together thematically and there isn't a whole lot of forward momentum with the main narrative and I'm being like "Damn, they really were very faithful to the middle part of the original FFVII".

    • @loki210
      @loki210 6 місяців тому +5

      Yeah, that's what I was thinking the whole time, and with other reviewers criticisms, it all basically lines up with the stuff that the original was known for. Like, I honestly feel as though even those people who did play and love the original have completely forgotten how it actually plays. The minigames is a huge one. That used to be one of the major talking points about why 7 was so good. People seem to have completely changed their opinion about these aspects being enjoyable or not because they've gotten used to more modern expectations around narrative.

    • @bart_ender
      @bart_ender 6 місяців тому +1

      Exactly. In OG after leaving midgar it’s basically just a long Sephiroth chase with silly side stuff to do until you maybe reach temple of the ancients. That’s not a bad thing though. It contributed to the sense of freedom and a vast open world while being lineair in actuality.

    The FF discussion was gripping. I was planning on listening while grinding out some missions in Granblue Fantasy, but about 5 minutes in I had to put down my controller and load up the youube video. I couldn't focus on anything other than the FF conversation.
    The secret sauce for me is the balance between criticism and genuine enjoyment. It wasn't a one sided conversation, which made it more interesting. I didn't feel like the discussion was too ass-kissey or too negative. It made me realize just how much there is to talk about with this game. That's very exciting to me.

      my impression was that ben likes it, janet can't say much, cuz she only finished 27% of the game and the other two didn't like it, but didn't wanted to spill the beans, it was way heavier on the criticism side, cuz it was only ben who added the actual positives

      @@shro_okee Did we listen to the same podcast? Janet was further along than Ben, and she praised the combat and characters. Kyle and Jacob also had a few positive things to say. The 'criticism/complements' balance isn't nearly as dire as FF diehards are making it out to be.

    Jacob’s comment about how rebirth doesn’t afford a lot of context to people who haven’t played remake is how I felt about remake itself. Felt like there was a ton of fan service in remake and an incomplete story with characters that aren’t well established within the game itself. By the end of remake I was decidedly checked out of the story and had no interest in anything more going forward. This entire remake franchise seems aimed directly at long time fans, and while that is cool, it would have been nice for Square to make these games more accessible/stand-alone for new players.

    • @burnout713
      @burnout713 6 місяців тому +6

    • @MarkPTP7000
      @MarkPTP7000 6 місяців тому +7

      As a huge OG fan, I still don't know what they were thinking with Remake's ending. It's completely incomprehensible without playing OG, and tbh probably needs CC and AC too. I think there's an assumption OG fans like this new direction for the story because 'it makes the story new even for OG fans', but personally I'd rather have an old great story retold here than a pointless new one created.

    • @MRayGames
      @MRayGames 6 місяців тому +5

      The only thing afforded to players of the original when jumping in to remake is being able to recognise when they foreshadow later reveals. That foreshadowing is still mostly in the midgar section of the original game, and you don't learn any of these big revelations until disc two (which rebirth still doesn't get to).
      I can see the frustration with not having questions answered, but isn't that the nature of a story told over several parts? It's not uncommon for books or movies, and definitely not for tv, so why can't games be allowed to hold back on aspects of their narrative to reveal at a later point?

    Ive been playing og ff7 and the story concerns with rebirth are very apparent. I forgot how little connective tissue there is with this portion of the game. It's literally going town to town for character vignettes without any meaningful story progression until the last couple of areas.
    Theyre some of the most memorable parts of the game, but yeah, "we're hoping to catch up to sephiroth" isnt a compelling narrative.

    • @PSpiceProof
      @PSpiceProof 6 місяців тому +5

      Yessss, thank you for saying this! This is honestly why some of the reactions to the criticism confuse me a bit. This isn't really a Rebirth problem, this is an FF7 problem that was there from the start. It's the meandering section of the original story and if Rebirth stays faithful to it, I can totally see it not working for some people.

    • @MRayGames
      @MRayGames 6 місяців тому +4

      @PSpiceProof yeah im surprised those familiar with the original aren't clarifying that this IS what this section of the game is supposed to be. I'm 100% on board with the criticism of it though, I can imagine 75% of it feels almost aimless in terms of big picture stuff.
      Maximillian dood had the best stopping point theory of this game being at the end of the northern crater segment. That would have given a lot more meaningful plot progression and ended set up for the 3rd game starting in the most dire situation possible

    • @danorganplayer
      @danorganplayer 6 місяців тому +1

      It's not really a problem. It's dependent on the person. You basically described Empire Strikes Back in SW. Not much is happening in the grand story. It's just a very character driven plot that delves deeper into its characters. It's not an issue there because we have all three movies. Just like it won't be when we have all three games.
      For me the character stories are what makes FF7. So getting a game going through each characters stories as they hunt down a person bent on destroying the world is perfect. 😊

    • @MRayGames
      @MRayGames 6 місяців тому

      @danorganplayer films like empire or two towers are definitely what comes to mind. It's the middle part of a trilogy after all. But I would still argue that a sequence like cosmo canyon or the corel prison don't service the story at all (mostly) in place of character development, where as those films still feel like theyre pushing forward.
      It definitely varies by person, but unless they're sprinkling in a lot more of the grander plot stuff at this section of the game than the og did, I can see it as a valid complaint to newcomers wanting to see where its all going.
      I love all this stuff in the og though, so im still very excited. Just sharing my thoughts having recently played the og. Means part 3 will be nothing but absolutely insane shit

    • @danorganplayer
      @danorganplayer 6 місяців тому

      @@MRayGames I think it's pushing things forward in the ways it needs to. I think it's pushing it just as much as empire is.
      Establishing Cloud's past with Sephiroth, establishing Tifa and Cloud's very apparent confusion with each other's stories and the ever growing corrupted cloud by Jenova ....leading to a confrontation at Forgotten Capital where we know what happens.
      To me that's extremely empire. Hearing Barret and Red's back stories are hugely important because it shows the why in their motivations as to why they'd even bother joining on this adventure. Not to mention everything else that's discussed at Cosmo canyon.
      To me it's very much fully empire. Nothing huge is happening for much of empire outside of interpersonal development of characters but it's this slow building dread leading to a confrontation where everything turns to shit ....leading to an ominous what is next? That's rebirth. Empire actually received mixed reviews upon release, it didn't become a favorite till it was all done. So rebirth has a leg up :P
      I can understand people wanted much bigger developments to happen but the middle chapter is all development which to me is actually the most interesting thing in a character driven story. People will grow even more appreciation for rebirth once we get the third entry

      Now now boys, stay on point here. Neither of those things is the criticism here. I could throw it back at you and say FF7's combat is far better than both of those games, but that's not the point.The criticism is "there is a lack of story progression". And I present to you 2 extremely well received games that have the exact same issue, and nobody bats an eye. All open world/huge scale games struggle with this, due to the story content being stretched over 80-100 hours. It's not just a Rebirth problem. I love The Witcher and BG3. But the problem does exist, and people choose to ignore it when it suits them.

      + that is faithful to the original, the very thing many people are afraid that the devs might stray too far away from that path and now even that gets criticized by seemingly the very same people, it's fine, one can criticize it, but og had plotpoints and sidequests that felt non fitting to the overall main story, that is the charm of it, it's supposed to be lighthearted, the calm before the storm, bonding with the group type of situation, but whatever

    With the Elden ring worries, my two cents: it was my first FS game, I played through on my PS4 on launch and then a year later I picked up on sale on my steam deck. In 30-ish hours, I did what in my first run took 90. There’s a lot less getting lost, loosing runes, and a lot of the boss attack patterns, even a year later, were still there. Not a thing I’d beat on a first go but definitely in just a small handful of tries.
    Also based on the trailer dialog “touch the withered arm to travel to the shadow lands” or whatever they said towards the end very much implies you’d do so by touching miquella’s arm in Mohgwin’s palace, meaning - despite his tough boss fight - you could access it as early as Liurnia I believe

    Making a big show of 'fans not being normal' just makes me not want to engage with the content. It just sets up any critical comment, no matter how reasonable, to be followed with 'oh look here come the fanboys, it's not even out yet'. Granted there will always be unreasonable people, but it kills discussion if negative comments are framed that way. Why bother engaging if I'm just going to be spoken down to? I skipped 16 coverage on here for the same reason, despite having my own criticisms of that game.

      Yeah I mean act2 in most stories is a journey/growth arc, but the tricky part is ballooning an act 2 into its own thing. It can easily end up lacking a strong inciting incident, climax and denoument given the fact that just by being an act 2 it inherently doesn’t have that. So it could very well be that the story of this section worksd much better then as part of a larger whole than standalone - and also probably why the smaller story moments with characters are the highlight here

    Feedback from Jacob and the others seems pretty consistent with what I saw in reviews. Other than the flashback the story seems to be too sparse in the opening dozen hours or so, and in general this isn't a standout open world. But I think if you're in the bag for this like I am (or Ben) that's not going to be a problem at all.
    The middle part of a single game (not even a trilogy) is tricky too. I do remember with original VII the "what are we actually doing" beyond "chasing Sephiroth" being a little disjointed, so maybe that was just always gonna be a problem.

    There's a small contingent of people online trying to push Search Action.
    Search action ain't ever getting over brother.
    My suggestion to those who irrationally hate Metroidvania is to try and push Metrovania instead.
    It takes two root words from the original portmanteaus, Metro meaning a subway or more evocatively a labyrinth of subterranean tunnels, and Vania which comes from Transylvania, which itself means "through the woods" with the root of "Sylvan" which basically means "of the woods" but also has connotations of the super natural and divine. Like forest gods and woods spirits, etc.
    That way you lose the specific references to named franchises, which always seems to be the main complaint about Metroidvania as a label, and instead you have a word that is etymologically evocative of dark lost places, mysticism, finding you way, etc. Which kind of exactly describes 90% of the genre.
    Also, because it's just a refined, contracted, version of the word that everyone knows, understands and uses already, people will more likely be receptive to the pitch and also know what the hell you're talking about. This as opposed to trying to forcible rename something wholly differently because you don't like the accepted term for it.
    Or, you know, just use metroidvania. It's fine and everyone knows exactly what it means. (also all the etymology I spewed above still applies and justifies it) That's how language works after all; that's where new words come from.

      I think it helps having played the original game knowing that this chunk is quite a lot of going town to town chasing down Sephiroth and character development/arcs. As fans we will lap it up, but people playing playing through first time via the remakes might feel a little like things aren't really going anywhere. That said although it was part of one game before it's a section I remember fondly. Do feel like they're being quite harsh on it considering (as far as we know at this time) it seems pretty faithful to og.

    During the Elden Ring question, Jacob's arguments around its success is interesting to me.
    He says mainly it was mostly hype and advertising that got people to buy and that ER wouldve been the biggest Fromsoft game even if it wasnt open world. I defs agree the ER hype machine was loud and Very contagious. Leo asks if GRRM have anything to do with it, Jacob says it doesnt move the needle. That is a little hard to believe. Dark Souls 3 sold 10 million copies and i think at least some part of that is due to Game of Thrones popularity. I think Jacob underestimates influence his name had on normie/non souls heads. Back to the open world point, the amount of people comparing ER to BOTW also provided massive interest. Lastly, Ben mentions how social media played a role in sharing all the neat discoveries the world has to offer and Jacob replies "But you dont know that until you buy it" I find this confusing because Ben's point is that people sharing it online would entice people to buy it? Of course they dont know, this is how they find out. Anyways, good pod as always
