- The programme's famous theme tune was Trevor Duncan's march from A Little Suite, performed by the Light Music Society Orchestra, the other two movements from the Suite were often used as background music. The characters from the series are also featured in a song entitled Dr. Finlay by Andy Stewart, which scored a minor Top 50 hit in 1965.
From 1970 until 1978, episodes from Dr. Finlays Casebook were broadcast on BBC Radio 4 with some of the same actors from the television programme.
This music brings back so many memories. When I hear it I am transported back to a safe and secure world as a child. Sitting with my parents watching Dr Finlay with a roaring coal fire in the front room. Thank you for the upload.
In front of a roaring fire but also probably in front of an 18 inch Bush black and white TV.
@@ewaf88 yep, with those dodgy valves, hoping for a good picture.
@@eugenebell3166 Yes switch on several minutes before the program to give them time to warm up.
@@ewaf88 absolutely, get the TV warmed up first, I'd forgotten about that, as and then wait for my dad to tune the picture in, which was often better before he started adjusting it. Happy days.
Time travel is possible.
Fab theme tune that evokes so many happy childhood memories….great sound quality.
All our senses provoke memories of the past--a sound not heard for years, a great smell of food, or flowers, even wood smoke/ dry grass burning ( my favourite) and suddenly your back there---Immediately I heard those openning bars, I was back in my 20's watching the opening credits to this very popular long running TV series--on a small black & white set---the opening credits with the little 30's car travelling along the narrow lanes and up the hill towards us--great !
@MrDaiseymay And Ronuk floor polish !!
Wonderful music from our childhood. Thanks
omg this takes me back to the 1960s watching this ,then thinking school in the morning

Amazing. My parents watched this programme all the time, and it is of late I remembered it. I listened to the theme tune and immediately recognised it.
"Away and make the tea Janet !" Wonderful memories :-)
@Gary McLean
"Shall I no put the kettle on fer ye, Dr. Finlay?"
“Shall I bring in the tea things, Dr. Cameron?” “Aye, Janet.”
i was always allowed to stay up late to watch dr finlay when i was a kid
god, I remember this as a child. Love.
"Dr Cameron, why are you writing with that rectal thermometer?" "Some bum's got ma pencil, Janet."
"Oh Dr Cameron, I've brought you a nice cup of tea."
" Och, Janet, can ye no' let a man have a shit in peace ?".
The books by AJ Cronin are well worth reading too ....
Dr Finlay's casebook must have played in new zealand radio and also the TV series we also had seen that very nice theme.
Oh good. I'm glad I found this because I've been given the task of learning it to play for a ceilidh! x
" Dr Finlay , there's a cup of tea in the pot for you " ..... " Thanks Janet , but I'd rather have the cup on the table " ....
Richy Batty they needed to have a Mrs Doyle as tea lady. “Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on!
Still great!
DR FINLAYS CASEBOOK 🌟🌟🌟
FABOULOUS TV SERIES 📺📺📺
I remember those grainy opening scenes of the hills..town and lake in Tannochbrae. It is a world that has passed us by. Too gentle by today's taste. A shame.
I remember way back then being absorbed by the opening scene showing the authentic Tannoch Loch Portrayed as Tannoch Brae Which was literally within walking distance of my home. In Milngavie How was I to know that years later I would become engaged to a man who’s Own home was two detached houses away from that glorious scene Loch side
God, the memories......
My local folk and acoustic club are having a theme night tomorrow, the theme being tunes and songs used for TV programs. I will be playing this lovely tune on my descant recorder.
"Oooooh, Dr Finlay, it's gruesome!""It's grew-some more since you put your hand on it, Janet!"
+effyleven Don't do that while I'm drinking coffee ! :)
This is my go to tune when I'm walking.
Makes me pick up the pace and puts a smile on my face.
I’m having a dram as I listen!
Great music and good programme.
Stay bright not arf
"Doctor Finlay, I've got heartburn." "Don't be stupid Janet get your tits out of my porridge."
Thank you for the memories BBC ❤
That's all the BBC have now that's worth offering; memories.
"Ah, Dr Finlay, will you be back for your tea?"
What's the matter- Do ya nay want yer kippers Dr Finlay?
As I recall they played pretty much the entire theme each episode. Concentration spans were a lot longer...
Sorry didn’t catch that, just checking my phone …
"Ooooh, Dr. Finlay, I've brought your breakfast up" "Well you shouldn't have eaten it Janet"
Ho ho ho!
buster007ish lmao
This is indeed a cute little song. Cheers!

"Aye Doctor Finlay, I daresay you think you're a very fine doctor. But I've been doctor to the men and women of Tannoch Brae these fifty years. I've seen them come into the world and I've seen them go out." "But Doctor Cameron, there's a new machine in Glasgow that can cure wee Jamie McTaggart!" "Aye Doctor Finlay, I daresay you think...." Etc, rinse and repeat.
This music brings it all flooding back. Thank you!
Great!
More tea Dr......
'Would ye no like a cup of tea Dr Cameron?' 'Can a man no have a shit in peace Janet?'
Yeah!
Different orchestration, quite liked this version, although slower, the detail to the instruments was key ✅.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyeeeeeeeee doctor Finlay.............
Och the noooo....brilliant.
Kicks me right in the gorbals.
@kazantzakis01 I don't think it's people are making fun of the theme (which has a well constructed melody) rather their fond memories of the series,
The fact that there were so many Dr Finlay jokes around at the time shows what a popular programme it was.
Twas the week before Christmas, and all through MetLife...
Not a creature was stirring, not even a plight...
English composer Trevor Duncan should have been listed in the credits
"Janet - take these sleeping pills 5 minutes before ya wake up"!
"Och, doctor Snoddy, no"
ooooh doctoor, wheres yer troosers?
I can remember Janet saying is that you Doctor Snoody
Mahler 1 first movement?
As a wee bairn I was always puzzled that "Mister Sniven" seemed to be a woman.
@Whitbywatcher Nay Janet - I was thinking of something a little more exciting...
Och, Tannochbrae twinned wae Brigadoon? :)
+Bruchag Could you please repeat that in Sassenach...
+mrjaffar - Oh, Callander twinned with a fictional Highland village that appears only once every hundred years.
Cracker Barrel.
@Whitbywatcher Nay Janet I was thinking of something a little more exciting...
'And Oooch what would that be Dr Cameron'
Well we've known each other for a long time Janet -perhaps.......
