I don’t know whether this is count as a rpg, but for me Steambot Chronicles. In my opinion is one of the hidden gem of PS2 that defined my teenage years. Breaks my heart every time I think about the cancelled sequel.
I'd love a new RoboTrek personally..... and I still find it both funny and kind of cool that Nintendo remade Crystalis for GBC with an entirely new final area & final boss. Sad that NST went from making gems like 1080, Bionic Commando: Elite Forces & Crystalis GBC to being relegated to just the Mario Vs DK series :/
For me its gotta be Dragon's Dogma. While it did receive a pretty good spin-off in Dragon's Dogma Online (which we sadly never received in the west before it was shut down; RIP), it deserved a sequel. I keep wanting them to just carry over the awesome new vocations from the MMO, and all the story beats as well. Knowing what Capcom can do with their recent AAA titles, it would be amazing to see them throw their weight into this one.
Skies Of Arcadia, yes!!!! Also, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that played (and loved!) Arc Rise Fantasia. If you consider it an RPG in the traditional sense, I would have loved another Threads of fate, too
Also a honorable mention for Last remnant of was a solid RPG, and the short dialog during the end credits, make it believable that a sequel would happen, but unfortunately nothing ever came of it.
As long as they do something about the system whereby the foes gets stronger based on the number of fights you have, even if those fights didn't make you that much stronger. When I played I borked the playthrough by getting stuck in a side quests, I'm certainly not alone in that.
I wish Lost Odyssey had a option to keep the camera still. The switching angles literally got me dizzy playing it and had to stop after like an hour. So much promise too =(
i wish popolocrois someday will comeback in ps4 for real or maybe on ps5? that would be cool and i think people will thinking "this game look like ni no kuni" xD
if not a sequel, a long-time pipe dream (no pun intended) of mine has been to have an updated and expanded Super Mario RPG...one of my favorite games ever, played it countless times, but it does feel "light" at times
havent watched it yet but hell yes we need another skies of arcadia, games with suikoden esq base building always make me smile. And those kick ass ship battles, awesome. Now to watch, keep up the great work duder
I hope Sega will make Skies of Arcadia 2 one day. I liked the game so much on the Gamecube and it would be so great if there would be another game like it. :)
The Golden Sun games are more or less spiritual successors to Beyond the Beyond. They all use the same battle engine as Beyond the Beyond minus the active play system.
Cool list... a little too nostalgia fueled - although nothing wrong with that. :) I guess you like your RPGs plain (nothing wrong with that too), I loved the innovation of the battle system in LOD, I think that's what made it a cult classic and that's what JRPGs need.... something extra for the players to enjoy - the addition system and the button mashing magic thing was fun - not exactly a 'flaw' for most people..
The difference between Zelda and Crystalis's different paths seems fairly obvious to me: the first Zelda came out four years before Crystalis and had already sold millions of copies before then. Crystalis was released shortly before the Super Nintendo, and Crystalis suffered the poor fate of many late-console releases (it didn't help that Nintendo released the phenomenal Link to the Past not long after Crystalis, either). In this case, it's like wondering why Grand Theft Auto is more popular than Saints Row; it's not a mystery. As for these games, I can't say that I'm sad that any of the ones I played haven't received a sequel. I don't think that every game needs to be a series. That said, I'm glad that davidvinc isn't enamored with Legend of Dragoon, which is one of the worst RPGs I've played, and I agree that a sequel probably could have been much better.
Ok i am a bit late but... yea, a have not played to many console rpgs but regarding handhelds i found quite painful the lacking of a sequel for Crinson Gem Saga and another for Solatorobo in the DS.
Great list! I do agree that the Final Fantasy series have gone down. I know that they're still popular and all that but they're not for me. I've actually been going through FFX again and while the story is great, I feel like the game is playing itself more than I am. It's way fun and all but I don't need story after every screen. Love the content! Keep up the good work!
The original FF12 was actually pretty good, if a bit light on actual story, but I found myself disliking the job system in Zodiac age. FF13 was okay, not great but okay, it's sequels were crap though and I just couldn't get into 15. I do have high hopes for FF7 remake but I'm trying not to let them get too high.
I actually like the job system in FF12. and that in turn makes me like it even more. but I'm biased. it was my actual first FF as I'd avoided the series because I wasn't big on Nomura's designs... and 12 had no Nomura as far as I know lol. FF13.... I like certain aspects of it, but I can't play it anymore. i've ran through it twice. that's enough... I actually like "playing" FF13-2 waaaaay more. it streamlined everything that wasn't quite up to par in 13. but the story is eh... Lightning Returns... oof... and 15... I platinumed it. annnnnd I'm never playing it again most likely because it's just ok. the platinum was that easy. people are sleeping on FF14 tho... that's the winner outta all of them to me.
Rogue Galaxy Arc rise Fantasia Skies of Arcadia the game or I believe the GameCube for the PS2 about a knight and a quasar Dragon was really dope as well
I agree with this list for sure, but certain games I would love to see remade before they make a sequel. Legend of Dragoon being one of them as it was such a unique game at the time and could of been a straight up masterpiece if it didn't have a couple glaring problems. I would love to see that game get a remake before it got a sequel, I think it would make the sequel that much greater. Another game I would love to see get remade before it got a sequel would be Xenogears but there is no way that can ever happen unfortunately. But could you imagine it getting a remake which didn't lose its funding and stuff by the second disc.
Personally, I Think TWEWY could use a seqeul (however, more of one by name, like Xenoblade 2 as apposed to a direct seqeul), the games concepts and settings really allow for another story with another set of chracters to be done anywhere else, plus the IP has only ever gotten remakes and has been techincally "dormant" for a decade, which really stings; And yes, a seqeul was teased but I don't think anything will come out of it (that, and the story itself was open-and-shut, and really dosen't need to be extended, hence why I think it would better off having a seqeul by name, and not direct)
I couldn't agree with everything you said more! Great games on this list! Vagrant Story is one game that comes to mind that deserved a sequel even though it could be argued that it takes place in the same universe or world as FFXII and FFT.
Strangely I’d just downloaded Rogue Galaxy for the first time earlier tonight.. I’ll have to try it sometime if I can ever get away from Valkyria Chronicles 4.. Mad respect for giving Level 5 their just do.. I’d definitely love to see more Jeanne DArc & Radiant Historia although I can’t quite envision better protagonists than the already established ones..
We'll never see a Lost Odyssey sequel. Sakaguchi has a hard focus on the Terra Battle series... That being said, we could use a Radiata Stories sequel. I think that had a lot of potential.
#5 - Honestly, you make Jeanne d'Arc sound like the Fate series. :p Personally, I never really got into that though, or at least Grand Order... some characters just got too moe and kind of weird for example. :p
I bought a used 360 just to replay Lost Odyssey. Love that game. It's not perfect but to me it's the last good "Final Fantasy" game. It just had a few pacing issues and needed more difficult bosses in the endgame since your immortal characters can get so OP.
Frankly, at the very least it deserves a remaster and port onto all of the modern generation consoles. Then once it blows everyone away maybe we can beg for a sequel.
I love the rpg genre but on this whole list I have only played 2 of them. Crystalis and Rouge Galaxy. I can only assume the rest are worthy to be on here. Robotrek is the only one off the top of my head that I would love to see a sequel for. Others I am unsure of weather there have been or not.
I missed Radiant Historia the first time around and only picked it up when it was released on the 3DS. I loved the game so much while playing it. There's just one thing that bothered me with it though and that's that it really doesn't have any replay value. I kinda felt forced to redo every timeline and search everything not that it wasn't all necessary. It's called Perfect Chronology after all but I didn't like the feeling that there just wasn't anything else to see. It's odd to say that as there's plenty of games that don't leave anything else to see yet I still replay them so I don't know why it bothers me about this game so much. It was just too easy to do everything perfectly since you have infinite time and chances to redo things. Maybe that's my problem. It seems to present itself as a game that needs to be played multiple times to get and see everything since it deals with time travel but then almost forces you to do and see everything the first time through. It's just my preconceived notion in regards to an RPG with time travel mechanics. Amazing game though. On a side note. Just before playing Radiant Historia I was playing Sands of Destruction on the DS. I find it funny that in two back to back games, I was fighting to stop the world from turning to sand. It's not something that comes up often in games yet two very different games on the original DS had such similar concepts for the destruction of the world. Sure there are plenty of games that have the same overall destruction method but these stuck out as it's a very specific thing that you don't see often even though they're caused by vastly different reasons. I just wish Sands of Destruction didn't just look like Xenogears and maybe took more than just the visuals from it. I need to go back and finish it though so maybe the game picks up a bit and I just haven't reached that yet.
Not sure I can agree that Crystalis did everything better than Zelda. Zelda 1 is most definitely the better game overall. Cyrstalis even cops one song from it (the dungeon song) along with one from Mega Man 1 (Cuts Man song). Not really a criticism, but it is important to note that Crystalis came afterward and was basically a Zelda inspired action RPG, adding on more traditional RPG elements to a game with a Zelda feel. I think that Crystalis definitely does a few things really well, and that those things are things that highly appeal to you. I don't think it does the action elements nearly as well, nor does it do the puzzle elements as well. The level design is also a bit more generic, even if it does have areas that are contiguous. Final criticism is that I think sword swapping is weird. I'm playing through the game again now actually, and you'll be in an area where your air sword does nothing to some enemies, and the fire sword does nothing to other enemies. Often they will be in the same screen. Since you have to swap both your sword and your add on, it's a bit cumbersome to swap them mid battle, back and forth many times. Maybe this improves later on, it's been ages since I played it, but early on it is pretty annoying. Don't get me wrong, it is a good game. I think it deserves some love and would make a great reboot or sequel with improved effects and control and interface.
If some of those games have been dead for 30 yeas, maybe is because some things are better that way. Crystalis and Guardian Legend aren't even RPG, they are adventure games, like some kind of Zelda, so they shouldn't be in this list. In any case, I would love to see another Rogue Legacy, Legend of Dragoon or Skies of Arcadia. On the other hand, Radiant Historia doesn't need a sequel simply because is a game to which you can't make one because of his plot, unless you ruin it like they did with FF VII, or yeah, make it entirely a different story.
I don't care whether or not you call it an RPG or an "Action Adventure Game", I'm going to say it anyway: Landstalker! LANDSTALKER!! LANDSTALKEERRRRRR!!!
I agree with most of these, though I'd have Lost Odyssey as #1 -- 'cause, 1. I love that game; and 2. Arc Rise Fantasia P'ed me off, twice. I never finished Arc Rise (may try it again), because as much as I liked the characters & story (not the voice acting so much), I did *NOT* like the difficulty spikes. That's what made me rage quit Arc Rise twice. It'd be really easy, then, out of nowhere, a fight would be nigh impossible. Methinks I hafta approach it again with a fresh mind, & grind a bit. (Legend of Dragoon #2).
rogue galaxy easily belongs in number one. idc about the rules so golden sun should be on here. dark dawn left on a massive cliffhanger, give us SOMETHING camelot! my biggest hope for the next rogue galaxy, is that they don't fuck it up and make it garbage like they have with the other, more recent games (ni no kuni, yo-kai watch, LBX, etc) rogue galaxy is probably the best level 5 game made, and that's not saying much cause the others, are kinda garbage. "Easily the best rpg on the wii." you sir clearly haven't played xenoblade chronicles, spectrobes, or rune factory frontier/tides of destiny
Lost Odyssey is probably in my top 3 JRPGs of all time. Such a masterpiece.
It needs a remaster omg

I don’t know whether this is count as a rpg, but for me Steambot Chronicles. In my opinion is one of the hidden gem of PS2 that defined my teenage years. Breaks my heart every time I think about the cancelled sequel.
Radiata Stories definitely deserves a sequel
I've been saying for years that Rogue Galaxy should have a sequel, PSX a couple years back really disappointed me with that.
Would love a switch port of lost oddyssey!
Also, is it just me or did Skies of Arcadia have a really drastic encounter rate?
Legend of Legaia!!!!! Am I the only one?!?!
Great game but it did have a sequel, Legaia 2: Duel Saga
I beta tested rouge galaxy back in the day. Still got a pirate flag from it hanging in my gaming room to this day.
Great game
@@ThomasstevenSlater I didn't mind that whole enemies got stronger based on the chain, it gave it some degree of challenge.
A Sequel to Rogue Galaxy would be nice. Level 5 made amazing rpg in Ps2 era.
I wish Lost Odyssey had a option to keep the camera still. The switching angles literally got me dizzy playing it and had to stop after like an hour. So much promise too =(
I'd add Nostalgia and Enchanted Arms.
i wish popolocrois someday will comeback in ps4 for real or maybe on ps5? that would be cool and i think people will thinking "this game look like ni no kuni" xD
if not a sequel, a long-time pipe dream (no pun intended) of mine has been to have an updated and expanded Super Mario RPG...one of my favorite games ever, played it countless times, but it does feel "light" at times
Blue Dragon is my preferred Post FF Sakaguchi game. It definitely needed a sequel imo, Such a great world I'd like to have known more about.
Cant believe Vagrant Story didnt make the list.
Terranigma desperately needs some love. Either a spiritual sequel or a remake of sorts.
havent watched it yet but hell yes we need another skies of arcadia, games with suikoden esq base building always make me smile.
I'd like to add Enchanted Arms
Chrono Cross is not a spiritual successor or spin off to trigger, its a sequel to it.
Cool list... a little too nostalgia fueled - although nothing wrong with that. :)
I guess you like your RPGs plain (nothing wrong with that too), I loved the innovation of the battle system in LOD, I think that's what made it a cult classic and that's what JRPGs need.... something extra for the players to enjoy - the addition system and the button mashing magic thing was fun - not exactly a 'flaw' for most people..
I don't play enough JRPGs...something that I'm trying to rectify....but Lost Odyssey is one of the few I actually completed. I enjoyed it a lot.
Rogue Galaxy is curently half price on the psstore, for those who are interested. ;)
I have a PS2 copy of Rogue Galaxy.
Man, kinda offended that you apparently have a lot of hate for Zelda, Mario sports games, and modern final fantasy games.
I remember breaking your number one 1 pick game disk out of frustration. I never wanna see that game again.
Ok i am a bit late but... yea, a have not played to many console rpgs but regarding handhelds i found quite painful the lacking of a sequel for Crinson Gem Saga and another for Solatorobo in the DS.
Skies was beautiful man. I still dream of another installment.
Sega really should make a second Skies of Arcadia game. The first was so good and so much fun.
Did Blue Dragon have s spinoff or a spiritual successor? If it does, I'm unaware of it.
There were 2 Blue Dragon games released for the DS, one was an action RPG, the other a RTS game. Both weren't anything to write home about.
@@davidvinc Well that explains why I didn't know about those. I'm not into portable hand held gaming. Thanks for responding.
I couldn't agree with everything you said more! Great games on this list! Vagrant Story is one game that comes to mind that deserved a sequel even though it could be argued that it takes place in the same universe or world as FFXII and FFT.
Guardian Legend and Crystalis definitely need sequels!
Xenogears!! Also mother 4. I know I know mother is a trilogy.. but cmon. I feel like it fits the vibe of the question enough lol.
Skies of Arcadia should be released on the switch
Maybe a sequel to Paladin's Quest?
Final Fantasy Tactics. Yes there are the Advanced games, but those are not direct sequels.
Yeah I don't get why skies never got a sequel, game was beautiful and so much fun, easily my favorite rpg.
Even though it'll never happen, Xenogears.
Radiata Stories PS2.
Brain Lord should have gotten a sequel also.
I would love to see a sequel to secret of evermore one of my favorite rpg
But...Golden Sun is the spirital successor to Beyond the Beyond.
monster hunter stories should have got a sequel on the switch
Well, now it will be having one.
i love lost oddyseyy
I have a question why Sega and Falcom Stopped making the games ?
If some of those games have been dead for 30 yeas, maybe is because some things are better that way. Crystalis and Guardian Legend aren't even RPG, they are adventure games, like some kind of Zelda, so they shouldn't be in this list. In any case, I would love to see another Rogue Legacy, Legend of Dragoon or Skies of Arcadia. On the other hand, Radiant Historia doesn't need a sequel simply because is a game to which you can't make one because of his plot, unless you ruin it like they did with FF VII, or yeah, make it entirely a different story.
I don't care whether or not you call it an RPG or an "Action Adventure Game", I'm going to say it anyway:
Landstalker!
LANDSTALKER!!
LANDSTALKEERRRRRR!!!
I stopped midway on ARF I should probably go finish it buying a cheap Wii.
You ran into an optional bonus boss.
sequel? I already have more games than I can possibly play let alone finish!
Kickstart/crowd fund a sequel.
Beyond the Beyond is a game that is better on a second playthrough.
rogue galaxy easily belongs in number one. idc about the rules so golden sun should be on here. dark dawn left on a massive cliffhanger, give us SOMETHING camelot! my biggest hope for the next rogue galaxy, is that they don't fuck it up and make it garbage like they have with the other, more recent games (ni no kuni, yo-kai watch, LBX, etc) rogue galaxy is probably the best level 5 game made, and that's not saying much cause the others, are kinda garbage.
"Easily the best rpg on the wii." you sir clearly haven't played xenoblade chronicles, spectrobes, or rune factory frontier/tides of destiny
