I grew up in a city called Fayetteville NC. I attended 71st HS. We would often play Schools out of Wilmington NC.so I say MJ his Senior year in H.S. I truly started observing MJ his Freshman year at Carolina. I was in the USAF but blessed to be stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro NC...about an hour or so, away from the Raleigh/Durham area. I was able to see MJ's game grow and improve under a MASTERMIND ( Coach Dean Smith). If your fundamentals where not solid under Dean Smith..they would be, or you didn't play.. A lit of people seem to forget MJ's foundation from Carolina. Standing vertical of 48 inches..6'6, Basketball IQ of Dean Smith and could shot the lights on or out....is crazy 🤪 😜 🤔 😳 😐. BUT the thing that impressed and got my attention the most 🤔 was.. HIS SPEED. He wasn't merely quick..Jordan was BLISTERING FAST. His time in the 40 was...4.3.. an unearthly 4.3. Making him not only the fastest thing on the court..but probably the fastest thing in the damn building. As an old-head, I have always acknowledged the Kobe comparison, but it is important to clarify that Kobe was like 96-98 MJ. He never had the athleticism Michael had through the first three-peat. Michael had a 48" vertical and I think even that is selling him short, and he was cat-quick. And MJ was still catching bodies all the way through the end in 1998. There aren't as many highlights just because especially in 1996, that was the greatest team ever and the best the Bulls had the entire MJ run. He controlled the game far more and didn't have to dunk on three guys anymore because his mental and his physical were so in-tune by that point. That fadeaway was essentially automatic, so there was zero real reason for him to take the punishment that NBA defenses were still able and willing to hand out in 1998. Everyone always talks about how amazing of a passer LeBron is... he only got a smidge over 2 more assists per game than MJ, but he also averages 3.5 turnovers per game where Jordan was 2.73 career. (LeBron is the career leader in turnovers with over 5,300. MJ had barely over 2700.) The defense is what seals it for me. LeBron didn't only stop playing defense a decade ago, he now fully rests on defense. Michael was always an elite defender, and he was still playing high-effort defense until his final game.

It's not just the eye test, but MJ owns Lebron in all of the advanced metrics as well, like efficiency, usage, box +/-, value over replacement, true shooting %, and he played more games every season on avg, was a much better playoff performer and much better in clutch time, shot over 40% from 3-pt once he focused on that aspect after 1991, was better on defense, when put into the point guard position during the 80s he averaged a triple double, has 9 first team all defense, defensive POY, 6 Finals MVPs 5-6 regular season MVPs, led the league in scoring what 10-12 seasons while also being an elite defender, playing more minutes and games every year...and did all of that in 7 fewer seasons than Lebron. MJ had no flaws in his game after the 1991 season. Lebron has never been good at mid-range, free throws, defense, he flops, he whines and complains, MJ had to play against defense...etc. Finally, MJ had a determination and tenacity that Lebron lacks. MJ was a killer competitor. Lebron never had the will and grit that MJ had. And MJ played more 50+ win teams in the playoffs than Lebron. The only thing Lebron has is more total games played and thus more total career stats even though all of his per game or efficiency and percentages are lower...and 4-6 in the Finals including abyssmal playoff performances. The comparison is an illusion.
