Watching this video made me realize how extraordinarily lucky I’ve been while flying with my metal needles! I appreciate you putting this together and helping all of us better prepare for traveling with our knitting!

I like to do my charity knitting/crocheting in trips. I’ll make hats, soap sacks, etc. On trips I’ve crocheted animal shelter small blankets.

My Chiagoo sets have amazing needle stoppers! I also use the shorter cords instead of a a barber code to put stitched on hold

Better safe than sorry. I think domestic flying is less risky for losing your knitting needles and notions to security. I know all the precautions you described but no one has ever tried to confiscate my stuff even if I have metal needles and little scissors. I have dental floss in my notions bag in case I lose my scissors to TSA (has never happened) as you can cut yarn with the place on the case. I was once worried about losing nice needles but never an issue. I would not attempt to knit on DPNs because they are more likely to fall on the floor or poke you or your neighbor, but magic loop or 9” circs or flexi flips are all good. Love Knit Companion too.

Thanks so much for your tips! When I am going on a "relaxing" vacation such as to a city or to sea, I bring my current WIP and depending on the length, I may also bring some extra, smaller project. However, I have the most experiences with hiking! For 3-4 weeks of hiking, I usually bring a medium-sized shawl project that I cast on just before leaving. It should be something easy yet entertaining. For example, I took Londoner by Justyna Lorkowska to Denmark, and Kallara by Ambrah O'Brien to Scotland. Note that I don't knit while walking, I knit when we pitch the tent. If I am not totally exhausted. :D

This is great! Good to have something easy to pick up for any extra time.

Another tip for flying: make sure you know how to do all the techniques in the pattern before getting on the plane! I once started a brioche shawl thinking I knew what to do and totally messed it up because I couldn’t watch any tutorials! That was before Wi-Fi on planes was more common. At this point I’d probably pay for Wi-Fi just to watch a tutorial in a pinch

I’ve only flown domestically and I’ve never had issues with knitting needles, metal or wooden. But I’m flying internationally for the first time soon and I’m nervous so thank you for the tips!! Maybe I need to start practicing with wooden needles because I’m a metal needle girly

Thank you - great tips and ideas! I had two pairs of needles confiscated in MX (returning to US). I too prefer metal needles and knew well enough to travel with wooden interchangeables, but…. I had forgotten to remove the needles from the cables to stash them with my writing utinsels beforehand and as I had already checked my bag, that wasn’t an option - lesson learned and that won’t happen again😊

This was such an informative episode! I’ve traveled quite a bit with knitting, but I learned several new things from you that I’ll try in the future!

Mexico does say knitting needles aren’t allowed.
Canada and USA explicitely says you can bring them
