- Harley Davidson Speedometer Speed Sensor repair. Tools needed 3/16 Allen head and Pliers. You can try cleaning it first... Or Replace and you are done...This will work on all Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Sportsters, Road King Softail, and all Glides.

Anyone having Speedo issues can first try pulling and cleaning the sensor. It is magnetic and attracts small metal shavings which can interfere with the sensor. Also check the connector- make sure it's clean.

@@arcane.ranger You just pull the sensor out and clean it. Its in the crankcase kind of down below your oil tank. You'll have to work your way through some hoses but it's pretty easy. There are videos here on YT to show you exactly where it's located.
I watched your other video and you had to fish the wires up threw the back of the battery and when I looked at my bike I noticed my wires did not go to the back of the seat. Wow, I thought I was going to have a big problem until I stumbled on this video, Thank You, Thank You and once again Thank You.

Got a 1998 Road King FLHR. Speedo was acting up, work and then not work but odometer seemed to work. Replaced speed sensor and got same thing. Assuming the speedo itself is bad. Don't make new replacement anymore. After market the plug has to be rewired and I'm not comfortable doing that. Your thoughts and opinions? Thanks.

Hey rocco! my 1995 sportster 1200 is having issues, the needle doesn't move at all, the lights come on, it shows the mileage and trip(they don't increase because it doesn't register) I've messed around with batteries and fuses with no luck. Thinking it's a speed sensor? Thanks! Also the bike has a click when I hit the horn and it does not work. I've tested, the horn is getting power and is good. Thanks again!

Gday Rocco I’ve got a 2015 road king speedo gives wrong readings whilst riding and when I come to a stop it will stay on 20, I’ll turn the bike off for a couple of minutes start it up and it’s fine, is the censor near the starter motor and do I have to take the starter out to get to it? Cheers
Your speedo sensor should be in the back part of your transmission by your starter. You should not have to remove your starter to get to that sensor. Let us know how it works out. Thanks for the video and others who commented. I have a '96 Evo Softail that does not have a gas gauge so I depend on my mileage/trip odometer to know when I need gas. My needle does not move and my mileage does not come on. But my speedo lights are on. Question...Which type of grease did you use or recommend? I am going to pull and clean and check my connection before replacing.

So I got to it today. Mine was pretty easy to find and accessible. It did have some metal shavings. I cleaned it and greased it. It has a long wire that goes all the way up under the speedo console. The connection and wires looked good. I cleaned the connectors with electronic spray. I turned on the bike but still have the same problem. So I will order a new one to see if that will fix it.

If you want to try cleaning the sensor what cleaning fluid do you recommend I use to clean it
2006 1200 r. The speedometer works but sometimes it will take a couple blocks of riding before it starting working
Battery connections are tight battery is properly charged
This bike has dual separate tack and speedometer if that matters

Hi Rocco. I have a 2013 XL883L. It is tighter than than that bike. I disconnected the vent line, but still couldn't get to it with a 3/16 hex socket. I'll keep trying. You can see the odometer, but the speedo and odometer are stopped.
I know it is tight. Move those Oil hoses a little bit. You will get it. Thank you for the up date and your Support.
Hey awesome video I have a 2008 Harley Davidson nightster 1200 my speedometer still lights up and has an odometer Reading the actual Gage just doesn’t move when I’m rolling down the road also occasionally when I pull the clutch in while slowing down the bike just shuts off, the idle so low that it shut off so is that all connected? and I have a check engine light

My speedo has all the telltale signs of a bad sensor, but is also pinned nearly upside down. Is my speedo toast? Or can it get stuck simply because of the sensor? Regardless of whether it has power. 05 1200c 23k miles.

Quick question about my speedometer.
It just started acting up, like jumping to 30 and sticking, it dont read right and goes back to zero when turn bike off, when at startup itll jump to 70 and just stay.
I took out the sensor and wiped it with a rag and didnt fix. Would i just need the new sensor?

Hi. Engine warning light on my Sportster XL 1200 R 2004 goes on after a couple of seconds. I’ve read somewhere that i may need to replace the vehicle speed sensor. I’ve taken it out and cleaned it already. Didn’t help. Also checked battery wiring. Do you have a link where I can purchase a new sensor. Thanks.

Hi Rocco. I've checked the codes as instructed in your Video. there are multiple codes. U1016 - Loss of ECM Serial data, B1006 - Accessory Line Overvoltage Instruments, B1007 - Ignition Line Overvoltage Instruments. Previous to my question I've checked battery connections and resolved loose contact at the negative terminal. I think the U code was triggered
by the B codes. I will clear the codes and take a swing to see how she is running. Will keep you informed. Thanks.

Hi Rocco, thanks for your tutorials. My speedo only goes to zero sometimes not regularly mainly at high speed on the highway, turning indicators don't switch off automatically after turns. I have checked the speedo sensor and it was clean. Have I to replace it anyway? Thanks

Could something happen if I disconnect that oil line on the right side and move the others as indicated in the video?
Do I run the risk of leaks in that oil line that I disconnected later?
Happy to help. Avoid removing those factory clamps on your oil lines. You should be able to move them or move your exhaust pipe to get to that Allen head. I have never removed an oil line to do this, I have loosened the second exhaust pipe for access, but I have moved an oil line to the side. Any questions just ask. Let us know how it works out. My 04 1200xl custom speedo starting jumping. I cant notice it at lower speeds but once i get up to about 45-50 its highly noticeable and gets worse when increasing speeds.
I just installed a new rectifier and tested my battery everything seems good there iv checked my battery connections and ground wires and everything seems good.
Any chance it could be my sensor?

@@TwoWheelRocco Rocco process to remove was pretty easy other than it was tight !!! Pulled sensor and found sensor had tiny metal shavings built up in factory groove in sensor cleaned sensor put a light coat of grease on o ring and popped it back in cleared code took a 50 mile trip all good . If the speedometer is acting erratically will it need replaced or just cleaned? This was happening before the bike died. I suspect an alternator problem was the cause of the death though. XL1200CB 2013

Hello Rocco!!. Greetings from Chile, Southamerica.. Thank you for your video and all the help explaining your situation. I have Dyna Low Rider 2017 and I'm guessing I have the same issue than you. But my bike started to choke and stall in the middle of the highway on my way home and the tacometer and speedometer went up and down, just like reseting themself.. The only way to make it home was driving my bike up to 3.000 rpm and in 5th gear.. Should I consider that the VSS might be dirty and try to clean it or change it??.. the bike has 28.000KM or 17.400 miles, I'm the fourth owner and I guess they never clean it before...

Happy to help. Sounds like you have a fuel pump issue. Remove gas cap. see if you could see or hear bubbles when you fire up your fuel pump. That's a sure sign that the Fuel Pump is starting to fail. On my 01 the mileage is working but my speedo bounces sometimes. Should i try and replace the sensor?

my 04 dyna speedo quit last week bought the speed sensor and replaced it, worked that day. took it out 3 days later 90 mph was the new zero only worked from 90- over the mileage at bottom. stopped for 10 mins started it up and it reads again. was told if it wasnt the sensor the speedo itself needs replaced cant be anything else so i ordered a new one waiting for it to come in when it does work the needle has a slight shake to it turn signals work no stalling signals cancel

Great video, you make things look very easy and doable. I Would like to know if the problem with my 2012 sportster is the speed sensor. The speedometer does not work, but it does show the mileage (does not change), also, when idling, it tends to stall.
Happy to help. Yes that would be a speed sensor. As for the stalling check your air filter. Make sure the oil on the dipstick is halfway. DO you need any lock-tite or other compound to prevent the nut from loosening? How much torque should you have on the nut?
No lock-tite or other compound, This is a grounded sensor. Check your manual for torque, spec, I just tighten. Hope this helps, Ride Safe and have a great day.

I replaced my speed sensor last summer after mine quit working, the lights still came on in the speedo and the toggle button worked but odometer didn’t change and needle didn’t move. Replacing the sensor fixed my issue but this season same problem. Any ideas what else it could be?

Is this the same on a 2000 sportster 1200 or should it have a cable to the tire? I just bought the bike today and the speedo turns on and shows mileage but needle wont move and the mileage number wont change

I also am having issues on my road king. Can’t be speedo because I’ve changed out 3 of them and then bench test them. I have a new dashboard and wired my indicator lights to it and have a tach on there. Tach works but not speedo. Seriously, I’ve been looking for 3 months nowA. I have a new S&S 111 in there. Your thoughts?

Two Wheel Rocco if you read my question it states I replaced it with three different ones. I even bench tested them. I retired my dash with my indicator lights. The lights work and the new tach works but the speedo does not. The sensor is getting power and I rewired the ground directly to the battery. I got nothing. I’m using a Sim-1 for calibration and my new dash is an Autometer Speedo/tach combo with a digital odometer. I guarantee it’s not the speedo directly. I have a Manuel but the wires on the Manuel are black and white so can’t read that. Also, Harley wired this thing all wrong. All the wires under my dash are all black and they didn’t have a tach so I followed the instructions from Autometer and wired the tach. When I go to calibrate it the tach works with pulses but none from the speedo. Like it isn’t ready the transmission. I am at a loss! I don’t work anymore so I spend all day with my Harley’s. This 97 has a new S&S 111 along with everything else is new including LED all around. What else am I missing?

I just took a look at the 2015 1200 that I have in the back you'll have to remove the rear exhaust, belt guard and pulley cover. And I think you're there it's not that bad,

Just a thought you can loosen the exhaust so it moves around, Get a swivel Allen head in there and get the job done that's how I would approach it at first. If needed remove belt guard, Let us know how it works out
99 Dyna odometer blinks out n speedometer drops n engine light comes on when I give it gas . Bike runs great. Suggestions? Harley shops around me haven’t been helpful.
Thats a carbureted bike. Idle and runs great, speedo going bad. remove and look at wiring. How many miles? Let us know how it works out.

98 Dyna, speedo going out occasionally. Showing mileage, but not registering then speed drops to zero. It will suddenly register again. Get by with cleaning? Everything else is running great.

Idk if your still replying but I replaced the sensor on my 05 sportster XL 1200 Custom and it still doesn’t work I tried to find videos of replacing it but non of the match with the wiring that I have going on over here

I have a -99 sportster 883...can i just replace the sensor or will i have to replace the wiring aswell? Cant really see if the sensor is loose or if its attached to the wire...
Yours will have a wire that ends under the seat...Not hard use string to trace the wire when you remove sensor. Hope this helps Let me know how this works out.
Hey Rocco, I’ve replaced the speed sensor on my 2005 Sportster but my speedometer is still not working. The turn signals and brake light are also not working (nor are the little light turn signal bulbs on the dash). The mileage on my bike will only show if I click the odometer button the back. Also the turn signals have power when I turn the security system on and off. I also can’t seem to get the bike to go into the diagnostics mode anymore. Any suggestions?

Would a defect speed sensor stop the engine to fire up? Bike died and it cranks but doesn't fire up. I tried replacing crankshaft sensor, but nothing ... Any idea?
What year and bike? No, a speed sensor would not affect your bike from starting. Sounds like lack of fuel. Charge battery fully, Squirt gas in throat of Carburator and start. let us know what happens.

That has happen to me also. Was a bad speedo. Pulled the back plate found a burnt connector. bought a used one on Ebay.
Does anyone know if this sensor will cause the accessories fuse to blow I've replaced the fuse multiple times and it blows every time I turn the key on the speedometer also doesn't work or light up at all? Mines an 06 Sportster
I would disconnect the sensor and see if your fuse blows, if not reconnect and then disconnect speedo at the back of your speedo and see what happens. that should help you figure where your problem lies. Let us know how this works out.

I have a 2013 Iron 883 and I think the wires of the VSS are somehow broken or unplugged. Any chance on locating, where these wires end up in the wiring harness? I want to measure the cables first, before I change the sensor or even the ECM. I have a 2013 Harley manual, but it only shows the color coding of the wires (black, black-red, black-white) and the location of the sensor. I can't find where the sensor is plugged in. Older models seem to have it under the seat, but not on my bike. The wiring is almost entirely hidden between oil tank, frame and other stuff. Not easy to reach or locate stuff...

@@TwoWheelRocco Hey, thanks for your reply. I need to explain a little further. The bike was in perfect condition, no issues, but the battery was dead. So I bought a new one, that didn't fit well, but I managed to get it in (cables a little tight). I also had a new V&H Fuelpak 3 laying around, that I hadn't used. When the new battery was installed, I also installed the FP3 and coupled it to the bike (using the app). Everything seemed to work fine but while coupling the FP3, the speedo needle spun around and "flickered". I thought this was normal. When the process was complete, I didn't flash a map to the bike or anything, I just wanted to do a test ride. When I rode, the speedo didn't work and the check engine light came on. The bike idled very low and stalled in idle. My first thought was something about the battery or ground wires. So I checked the battery. The ground contact of the battery was damaged and the cable was almost detached. So I thought that I found the issue and I bought a new battery again. This time I made sure that every cable was secure and not under tension. I also checked the fuses. Then I rode the bike, but still got the same issues. I then entered the service mode via the speedometer and got the following codes: P0502 (VSS), P0505 (Idle Speed) and U1016 (don't know what that is).
So my next idea was either a corrupted wire from the VSS-Sensor or even the sensor itself. Therefore I wanted to check or measure the three VSS wires before I install a new VSS sensor. The very last option would be, that the FP3 somehow damaged a module (I hope not).

My 1998 Sportster 1200 lights up , shows mileage but speedo doesn't work . When I'm on the hi way the needle will jump around then drop back to zero . Drag Specialty speedo ? Any suggestions ?
I would clean sensor, if that don't work replace speed sensor..

I have 2006 883 speedometer doesn't work. Checked fuses all good ordered and replaced sensor just like you did. And nothing... Wont light up or work. Any other idea's ???

So this will fix the code PO502 on my 2006 Harley Sportster 1200 ? That is the code it gave me, I cleared it & got about 35 - 40 miles before speedo dropped, check engine light comes on & turn signals don't turn off automatically. She has a brand new battery that replaced one that was 3 years old & had a broken positive post.
I would replace the speed sensor. And you will be alright. Let us know how it works out.

@@TwoWheelRocco I have successfully removed, cleaned & replaced the sensor. I found a swivel socket & magnet to be my friends. It went back in a lot easier than it came out. I will update when I ride & see if that fixed it. If not I will replace it & it should be easier if I have to do that. Thanks for the video !

Do you know if the vss would affect idle after the bike is warmed up? Seems like my bike isn’t getting gas when I pull the clutch in on the road cruising or coming to a stop. Changed fuel line thinking it was kinked and fuel pressure was OK. Speedo lights up but no mph reading and odometer stays the same ...

What is your speedo doing?
Spedo and odometer are both out completely.
Also the light turns on but no digital odometer reading and spedo won't move.

I have replaced several of these on my bike is this common 2001 Fatboy they last maybe 6-8 months what else can be causing them to go out

If you have a 2014 883, i guarantee you wont be able to get your hand or ratchet or allen key where the sensor is. Good luck and if you figure it out, let me know. Safe riding and thanks
So my problem is while driving is that it'll cut off and on while driving. Do you think its the same problem or something else... Just the spedometer goes to zero, the tachometer stays on though
Clean and reinstall speed sensor...maybe you will get lucky...dirt and metal on the sensor...that it pick up from transmission. Let me know how this works out.
I cleaned off the speedometer sensor, but continued to have the same problem. I was recommended from a mechanic to switch out or rebuild the Spedo Cluster. I think I could take it apart to where its wired to and hopefully its just a loose cable. The mechanic did mention it was a common problem but being that these spedo clusters are looking like anywhere from 200 - 300 USD I may just disregard it. I did wanna ask because I just hit the 30K mile mark (48K Km) my 2005 Sportster owner's manual is asking to replace the rear fork bearings. Do you think you could possibly make a video on how to do that, if there is a video I haven't seen one yet. Thank You.

Question Rocco.. my speedo works when it feels like working.. sometimes it will stay at 0 and just to 10 and back down like it's trying to read.. the lights and buttons and mileage all work but it won't register miles when the speedo doesn't move from 0.. any ideas.. thank in advance.. love your vids

Great video.. was having issues with my Speedometer dropping off and not working with my 2005 Sportster 1200. Followed the video and was able to remove and clean my sensor in a matter of 15 -20 minutes. This worked for me! Thanks again!

Qhen you say Cleaned, like you would do withbany other sensor? My spedo indicates milage but when I drive the needle does not more nor the milage gets recorded

I would replace your Speedo sensor. It is an intermitting problem. You could try to clean the sensor magnet. I would just replace, it is an inexpensive part at your dealer. You can find a sensor on your transmission just to the right side of your starter.

its under your starter . you have to remove the starter. i just changed mine on my 07 RG. it wasnt a bad job . did it in a couple of hours. took it out for a test ride tonight seemed fine. real test will be on the weekend. problem was always intermittant. i burned through 2 tanks of gas and it stopped working 3 times last weekend. it wanted to run rough and stall also.
what fuse do u check?
There is no fuse for speedo sensor. Clean it or replace, I replace them. Let us know how this works out.

Idles high then goes back to normal after riding for awhile takes 10 15 seconds to go back to normal

Remove back cover and it will have a burnt oder, and show some signs of burnt at the connection. You will see it clearly. Let me know how that works out.
