  • A spider is captured eating it's own web one morning in stunning 4K footage. Watch as it goes to each corner to cut the existing web while hanging from a new line as it eats its own web after a long night in Southern California.

Good job with the video - I've also tried to capture this but haven't got the quality I want for posting.

It is common for spiders to eat their own web daily to recoup some of the energy used in spinning. Through ingestion and digestion, the silk proteins are thus recycled.

Wow - a friend told me that spiders eat their own web but I didnt believe him. Now Im interested to know whether this is all species of spiders or just specific species or perhaps just individuals of species and WHY :-D

I didn’t even know what I was recording while it was happening. Nature is so trippy.

From what I could find: Spider silk loses it's stickiness over time. A spider will eat it's own web to recycle the material used in web building. Web building takes a lot of energy to do, and so does producing new silk, so by eating the webs, the spiders can re-spin a fresh web without having to produce an entire batch of new silk, thus conserving energy and calories, which is especially useful if it fails to catch a meal that night. As for the species of spiders, I am completely speculating, but it's probably any species that utilize webs to catch prey, such as orb weavers, or cobweb spiders.

It depends on the situation of the spider has a few succesful catches it will stay and just repair and reapply the stickiness however if its been a while since a catch the spider will eat its own web for nutrition aswell to recyclye the proteins used to produce the web (different types of webbing use different combinations of proteins a safety web used for cathing its self if it falls is very different to the web it builds as a home, the webbing they use to wrap their pray is also very different) they most commonly eat tje webbing they use to wrap prey as 1 they cant remove it and 2 because its one of the strongest types of webbing they use. Fun fact spider silk is actually a liquid until it comes into contact with air

    Good morning...🙏
I was just checking whether it's true that I read from a holy book "SIDHAVEDAM" is true.....
In that book, our Guru, Swami Sivananda Paramahamsar clearly written before 100 years ago, that,
A spider weaves it's web. That web is intended as a habination for it and also as a contrivance to catch it's prey. We know that the web is woven by a fine thread. But where is that thread obtained? From within itself.
Likewise, we all have that thread within us. That is called; LIFE FORCE. That power is one kind of Glue. That glue is drawn in to a fine thread (World!) The spider weaves a web which is a world of its own and sits in a corner there. (Like WE in this small World!) Namasthe🙏
