The Story of Robo Force: Murdered by Transformers

  • Robo Force was a toy line created by the Ideal Toy Company in the year 1984 for CBS Toys.
A series of squat robots with suction cup bases Robo Force was lead by Maxx Steele in their fight against Hun Dred and the evil Nazgar.
Robo Force also had an incredible amount of marketing behind it, sure that it would be the next big thing. But what Ideal and CBS couldn't have seen coming was the pop culture juggernaut that was the Transformers.

Wow, seeing these takes me back. My parents picked up a whole load of these when I was little, and I still stumble across the play castle from time to time when helping them in their basement. Transformers really did change the landscape so much that I only remember Robo Force from recollections under a Christmas tree. A plunger on a trash can with arms was a terrible gimmick.

Every step of the way on this one was doused in nostalgia for me. An hour ago, I had completely forgotten that this toy existed. By the end of it, I remembered that I had the one with the squirt gun on it, and my neighbor had two of the others. I also remember drooling over the life-size Maxx Steele after seeing it in toy catalogs.

I also had that same one. Blazer I believe is the name. I went down an accidental rabbit hole of Madballs and ended up seeing the Robo Force on the shelf of a toy store tour video. Gobots didn't die because of transformers, gobots died because of Tonka,, taking an incredible toyline (machine robo) and then rebranding it gobots and aiming it at pre school kids was insane, also insane was changing the robots face's' in the cartoon and books(crasher??) But then selling repackaged robo machine's with unchanged faces was dishonest and shameful, Tonka killed the gobots by devising a shit story line seemingly scribbled on the back of a beer mat in ten seconds, now as a kid in the 80s i wasnt stupid enough to fall for that, but as an adult i now collect machine robo,i love them, but the word gobots is banned in my house 😉,you can thank tonka for that not tf

Thanks so much for reviewing Roboforce - I _LOVED_ these toys when I was a kid! Sure they were chunky, yes they didn't have nearly as much playability as Transformers, but that never mattered to an imaginative 10 year old. The character designs were very unique, indelible (I still like those designs), and - I think, spoke well to each robot's personality.
On a down note: advertisements for the Robocruiser were highly misleading; the way it was described led you to believe it floated on a cushion of air... fast forward to Christmas morning, and imagine my disappointment when it not only stayed flush to the floor, it barely moved at all. : / I guess Robotech just wasn't popular enough for a class action lawsuit. 🤷‍♂️

Sad really the fate of this show!😢. I absolutely loved the robot designs and think I would have loved that show also. Back then so many good cartoons some just could not hang in and compete. Thanks Dan and Greg for connecting us once again with our nostalgic past😁👍

I've been watching this channel for amor a year, but it just hit me because of this episode that a big part of why is because it's a bit like Toyfare magazine. Robo Force was one of the articles I remember reading in the early 2000's, so it's cool seeing this topic in much more detail than what I returned seeing at the time. Quite the pleasant blast from the past

I loved this toy line so much and was sad to see it fade away...... I had some of the figures and even the erector set...... the big talking Max Steele radio control robot was my ultimate goal.
As much as I loved transformers, gobots, and voltron, I could still appreciate the 60's sci-fi robot aesthetic this toy line was clearly inspired from.

Robo Force: CRIMINALLY under-rated! I can quite categorically confirm that the line was known as "The Robots" here in the UK, although some figures were available as Robo Force as late as 1990 in places like Woolworth's and other cheapo import outlets which have since long departed the high streets.
Personally, I have Maxx Steele, Coptor, Wrecker, Blazer, Hun-Dred, Enemy, the Robocruiser and the Fortress Of Steele. In European markets, Coptor was marketed as an evil robot - maybe to even out the good guys and the bad guys, but most probably because on one publicity photo Coptor was positioned closest to the evil robots and the European sales reps mistakenly made the assumption that Coptor was a bad guy himself.
I have to side with Michael from RetroBlasting by saying that Robo Force has a lot of heart - because they are the robots that hug you back.

I see you got to throw in Go-Bots! I've got almost the entire run of Maxx Steele Roboforce. There is a certain allure to them as a retro look of the 60's but in the...80's. I remember getting one as a kid and liking him for a day before the totality of his two play features wore off. I was gifted the rest from another collector that needed to make room for Transformers in his collection. They sit proudly on a shelf almost by themselves, only because they are so big and bulky. Awesome job bringing some love to this line!

Great vid Dan! I remember Robo-Force, lol. Yeah they couldn't compete with Transformers but they were still pretty cool. I had Maxx and a couple others. I recall my grandma getting them all on discount at Montgomery Wards Outlet, lol. Their base & the huge control center vehicle were awesome though and found their way into a lot of my figure adventures. Good times!

I had odd memories of Robo Force. Just slightly too young to enjoy their initial launch, I remember them most from friends' hand-me-down collections or from yard sales. I actually bought several of the ToyFinity releases and was part of their Club Zeton for its inaugural year. I'd still love to see them do a Blazer or Vulgar

For such a weird design, it was one of the most memorable toys I had as a toddler because of the suction cup and the arms. The toy featured such unique structures compared to other toys of the time. I have fond memories of playing with mine while attending my older brother’s nursery school graduation.

I have no idea why this vid popped up in my recommended list, but I am so glad it did! I had completely forgotten the name of the line long ago, but I genuinely loved these toys back in the day and I am so glad this vid came along and refreshed my memory. I used to watch reruns of Lost in Space with my Grandad back in the day, so I had this weird affection for 50's style robots as well as the super cool Transformers, and needless to say, Hun-Dred and Megatron had many evil team-ups against Optimus Prime and his allies. Ahhh.... good times.

You're right, they do have a 60s aesthetic. That explains why my mom liked them and would buy them for us. I did like them though, and I watched the cartoon. It only aired once, and it became like an urban legend on the internet. There were people claiming no cartoon ever existed no matter how many times I insisted I had seen it.

I can’t believe that I didn’t know what Roboforce was even though I had Coptor! This was an episode of Toy Galaxy that really opened my mind!

Do a segment on "The Little Rascals!" Before the 80s animation boom, The Little Rascals was a staple of daytime children's programming, and they even had a cartoon and a toylike in the late 1970s.
