I love how you started incorporating watercolours again! I am inspired!
Thank you! Yes it feels good to be using them more regularly. Thank you for your lovely comment
Thanks for taking us along. This prompted a few thoughts regarding business and art. I try to keep up with business documentation every few days - otherwise it is so unpleasant to sit for that long!! Regarding sketching - it is so fun to see your approach. I find it so enjoyable to sketch while traveling as well - coffee shops, restaurants, the airport ... really passes the time in a pleasant way and it promotes other kinds of memories about the trip. Thank you again.
Thank you for the lovely comment! And you’ve just reminded me to do some more business records now 😅 ha ha!
Same as me about loosening up and not being afraid to “mess up” my precious sketchbook
Right?! 😅 It's a tricky mind-barrier to overcome, but so nice when you manage it. Thank yo so much for taking the time to leave a nice comment.
Yes use that paper❤I would❤
It seems silly keeping sketchbooks full of empty pages ❤️
@@EmmaWoodthorpe I agree so I use them for exercises and sometimes they turn out to be favorites, paper is to expensive to me to not use😊 I originally found it intimidating to produce masterpieces and I put to much pressure on myself for nothing.
Exactly! ❤️
Come with me, she says... To the dentist, she says... Erm...I 'll sit this one out 😂
Can relate to the expensive sketchbook issue, and basically everything expensive... I myself have a couple of sketchbooks totally untouched, because I am hesitant to use them for scribbles. But then one lovely artist told me, that the sizing on watercolour paper can go off, and my sketchbook is going to be basically not usable for what it was intended. Did it help? No. They are still there, and I keep using cheap stuff. It's like a set of lovely tea cups, that's hidden in the depth of the cupboard, waiting for the moment to come. It's embarrassing, and I think it could come from the way we were brought up, our family never had lots of money to burn and we always had stuff to use for every day and then stuff, that could be used when we went out, or holidays.
I particularly remember one lovely dress, that I was itching to wear, but it was for " going out", and when the time for "going out" came, I already grew out of it and couldn't wear it at all. 😅
Maybe today is the day to finally break this vicious cycle! 🎉
ha ha, I needed some moral support 😅 Oh that dress story is heartbreaking, but spot on! Yes, use the thing! I'm trying to do this more and more. Thank you once again for you lovely comment!

Yeah, fresh from the lovely holiday and straight to the dentist office... and then accounts...You like contrasts in life! 😜
May I just add, your sketches in the forgotten sketchbooks are lovely, I didn't put that into previous comment for the fear of it becoming monstrously long, but what needs to be said, needs to be said! I am excited to see more watercolour popping up.
Question - when you are about to start your sketch, where do you start? I found out that it's difficult to get going for me, after I start, the only thing to do is to finish it (OFF)😂, but to get started is problematic.
It’s funny, me and my pal Jenny were talking about where we start when drawing a person. And we both start with the head and then draw everything around that. One illustrator we know of (who shall remain nameless!) apparently starts with the feet 😳 which feels really jarring to my brain 😅 But I suppose it’s whatever feels good for you. I hope that’s an adequate answer ❤️
@@EmmaWoodthorpe
Thank you! So, step one - start with the head. Got it.
Starting with the feet sounds ... a little bit strange, but to each it's own, whatever floats the boat!
That’s just what works for me - then I can work out the relative sizing for the rest of the body. But what works for you might be different.
Did you have any sizing issues with these old sketchbooks? Thank you for sharing, I needed the reminder that I have some expensive sketchbooks still lying around too ..
In what way do you mean? Someone else mentioned sizing issues with old watercolour paper, and it’s something I’ve never came across before. Thanks for taking the time to leave a nice comment

Watercolour paper apparently is coated with something called "sizing", sometimes it's gelatin based, other times not, but it deteriorates with time, especially if stored incorrectly. And then, when watercolour is applied to it, it behaves absolutely disgusting, becomes splotchy, the paper doesn't absorb water evenly. Colours are duller. It's still can be used for other mediums, like qouache, but it's a pain in the neck. There are some advice online how to reapply sizing back to your paper, but I doubt it will make it as good as new. But then again, I never tried. That's my take on it🙂
I love this! I never even knew such a thing existed. I honestly love learning new things like this - I thought people were meaning that the paper shrank 😅 I didn't notice anything on this one, but it does explain a bit about one other sketchbook that I was using a while ago - a Stillman & Birn one I think, that when I added colour it absorbed it like untreated cardboard, but in patches. I was not happy. So maybe I bought a sketchbook that had been in storage for a while? Who knew! Thank you of expanding my brain today. Have a good evening pal
@@EmmaWoodthorpe one thing you can try when you encounter sizing gone off is to apply watercolour ground from Daniel Smith or Gesso (both behave a tiny bit differently). But using different mediums like gouache is way easier and costs less..
Or in other words: USE THOSE EXPENSIVE SKETCHBOOKS FIRST 😉
Exactly!
