- A major civil engineering operation has been completed in Great Yarmouth, with the bridge leaves successfully installed at Herring Bridge.
Herring Bridge is being delivered by BAM Farrans Joint Venture for Norfolk County Council and it will be open to the public during the summer of 2023.
Two leaves of 45m by 24m were installed during a 72 hour river possession which started at 08:00 21st March.
Each leaf weighed 770 tonnes and a further 500 tonnes of heavy weight concrete per leaf to create the counter weight. When both leaves are up there will be 50m of navigable channel between the two bascule chambers.
The east leaf was installed during the first 24 hours into the closed position. The west leaf was installed during the next period, with both of the leaves raised to the open position on Thursday 23rd March.
The construction stage started in January 2021 with the accommodation, enabling and demolition works. This was followed by the in river marine works and construction of the approach embankments which support two underpass and the bascule bridge (opening bridge). Once complete the local road network will be upgraded with a five-arm roundabout and dual carriageway.
The bridge will link the A47 at Harfrey’s roundabout to the port and the enterprise zone on the other side of the river. It will ease traffic congestion on the town’s roads, shortening journey times and improving journey reliability, as well as supporting wider plans and work to maximise investment, regeneration and economic growth opportunities in the town and wider borough.
Nicely done
That's some engineering well done
I bet the setting out engineers must hold their breath as it drops into place ! Looks very neat. Hope they used William George Armstrong to sort out the hydraulic lifting.
I certainly was, huge sigh of relief when it went in perfectly😳
Fantastic....Now it`s Ipswich`s turn, we need on badly ....
Why do the knuckles of the bride make the river narrower, and hence increase or decrease the flow of tidal water levels……….?
Шикарные крылья. Моё почтение. Есть чертежи и(или) описание расчётов? Заранее спасибо.
The whole of the Norfolk Broads have been at record breaking flood levels since this has narrowed the river channel. You were warned not to impeed the river flow but decided you knew best.
I notice they had built loops into the bridge to attach the crane to, will they stay now all will they be cut off?
The lifting eyes have already been removed from one leaf. The others will be removed later in April when the bridge is lowered again. 🙂
Can someone remind me where these Bridge sections were made
They were made in Belgium
Yes why can't they be made in the UK
@@mikesmith9781 I’m not sure to be honest
@@mikesmith9781 Because things are made better in the EU
Shame i doesnt work yet lol
Pit about the bomb which held up construction by 4 days, but hey, only 1 year late! (and they knew about the bomb before construction started) but they will not tell anybody this as it shows up incompetence
Ваша ріка дуже темна, мабуть багато мулу..
What I'd like to know is how come drug cities bridge is so far ahead and Lowestoft's is so far behind . Yarmouth is a dump
Nothing great about Yarmouth anymore or his bridge
