From what I remember the Ocean Room used to be a swimming baths when I was a boy. My uncle Frank was the caretaker. I'm now 80 so going back a bit. When I was a boy I sailed my yacht in the pond. Also my son and when I had a grandson so did he. Though there boats were motorized. The promenade is where my mum first met dad. As they were walking along it mum said she dropped her handkerchief on purpose and dad picked it up. They were married for 65 years. The beach is always as you see it. The tide doesn't come in any further and the sand is so soft. My family have spent many years holidaying in Gorlstone. Happy memories. Thank you for this walk 🙂

I'm 65, always holidayed here as a child with 4 sisters, shame you didn't go up to the gardens top of cliffs, but thank you lovely memories, the beach was lost for a few years and the council had to build barriers with huge rocks to save the road and shops, then years later the tides turned and it all came back to how it is now! ❤

0:11 we used to go fishing oiff that pier when we were young teens
0:30 My first flatlet can be seen where I lived aged nineteen 35 years ago
also the home of my first ever girlfriend..
3:08 The Pavillion.. it used to have shows and such I recall.. for a while there was even a BMX club inside with a ramp!
3:43 Ocean Rooms, my first kiss, and much else. Monday Ocean rooms until 11pm was for under 18's. Thursday was for over 18's. Aged 14-16 we were at the Monday Ocean rooms every monday on a school night.. smoking, drinking cola.. dancing.. chasing girls..
Behind the Ocean Rooms in the 70's and 80's was the most amazing open-air swimming pool. Long gone.
Pier Hotel.. nice hotel.. the movie 'Yesterday' had a scene here..
7:25 we would 'crab' off that jetty, though signs warned people not to.. obviously when the tide comes in..
10:30 all of that greenery used to be the big outdoor pool..
11:00 that bandstand etc all new...
11:35 at the pool you could walk all around that big round balcony, put your towell down and sunbathe..
16:33 almost in tears at this bit for some reason.. I remember the many boats I would sail here with friends as boys..
17:50 used to be a free paddling pool for kids..
18:30 we would skateboard, BMX, and later sunbathe with the girls on the beach about here...
I left home to make my fortune. I went to university and got a 2:1 BEng Hons. Then became a teacher. Then quit teaching and did computery stuff. Didn't make a fortune. I now live in awful Reading.. and I so want to come home. Anyone offer me a job? I can do SEO, wordpress/joomla etc, got numerous engineering qualifications, have worked in maintenance, manufacturing and research and teaching..
I need to point myself home. I miss my Gorleston. And Yarmouth.
    Thanks for the video.

My Uncle Frank was the caretaker of the swimming pool. But that was when I were a lad back in the 50s. Thankfully it hasn't changed to much. Beautiful place

I have been to Gt Yarmouth a few times over the years, but I have never been to Gorleston. The beach looks great... I miss the sand & sea so much ☹️
Going for a few days break to Brancaster in a couple of months so I may get to visit then.

Thanks for the walk. It's strange that there are so few people on the beach in summer.

My family comes from all around Norfolk but dad came from Gorlstone. The reason there are never hoards of people on the beach is because its one of those places if you don't know where it is you don't go and Great Yarmouth is the next beach along but you can't get to it without going via main roads. I think I read the other month its the second best beach in England. Beautiful place 🙂

Can you swim between Gorleston to the southern tip of Yarmouth, please?

    • @GimbalWalkTV
      @GimbalWalkTV  5 місяців тому +3

      Not sure
Right now I'd not want to swim in any of England's waters with the amount of sewage being pumped into it by the water companies

@@GimbalWalkTV true. It's such a shame what they're doing and they should be prosecuted for their actions, especially as we get a £1000 for littering. Hypocrites
