- “I met Mike in New York City in a restaurant called Tony Romas. He was touring promoting "5 Miles Out" and I knew some of the band. We then met in London and I played some basic tracks for "Crises". I was starting to produce and we spoke about that and he asked me to co-produce the record. He gave me a trial week but then fired the engineer and then wanted me to engineer. I was always quite "technical" and had done a little engineering before but not on that kind of equipment. Basically he threw me in at the deep end and I had to swim. I am eternally grateful for the chance he gave me - I learned a lot from him about making records. He is a great engineer himself and I guess I must have impressed enough for me to carry on and finish the album.”

I’m exhausted just watching Simon🤣
I love Mike's music for more than 40 years. This Crises finale is one of my favorite parts, a in live performance is spectacular, of course with Simon's drum part. Simon also has a nice part in Monut Teide, or at least one of my favorite parts...
I witnessed Simon's brilliance on Oldfield's Discover and the Lake Tour when it came to Wurzburg, Germany. The show was my very first "rock" concert and I'll always remember that night because of Simon and how he stole the show. I went with a friend of mine who was a young drummer, and I think his lower mandible is still on the floor of the arena where we caught the show. I wish Simon and Mike would collaborate again because they make amazing music together.
1984 Dortmund here. :) Same story, agree to you 100%. Sadly i'm sure, there will be no collaboration again. But Simon still has good memories of the work with Mike. Met Simon at a small gig in Bochum and we had time to talk after the show.
1984 Bremen here. :) I agree - I was 16 then - maybe the first musical "game changing moment" of my life - watching my 2 musical heroes together on stage a few meters before me ...
I got to know a lady working at the hotel THEY stayed that night right in front of the stage , and she promised to send me autographs ... she did (!!)
I never met Mike, but met Simon twice (later), but was always too shy to really talk to him much (though he is soo nice and polite)
I also wondered why they didn't collaborate any longer (Crises & Discovery are brillant albums!!) anyway - both of them did & do great art since then (Return to Ommadawn / Protocol etc.)
😍
Totally envy you 😋
I was there. What a great night. I didn't expect a Simon Phillips solo to be the highlight of the night. But it was.
Oh, nice to hear about that! Thanks.
I’ve always considered it a brilliant drum passage, but from the vinyl at the time.
On stage… much better. Sure. Breathraking.
Welcome to my Channel.
Also totally envy you 😋
Wowww que privilegio dichoso tú, No tiene comparación haberlo visto en vivo.!!!
I've been air-drumming to this since 1980.
Love it
Oh my arms are tired
w0w - thats 3 years before it was written - good skills! ;)
Phillips is one of the most musical and energetic drummers! He is endlessly creative and such an inspiration to listen to and watch.
outstanding!
I think Cris Side 1 is one of the greatest drumming in existence. And then seeing the video LIVE. He has to use his whole body and is practically jumping off of the stool at some points to pound those skins. Simon did a lot of other work but for me this is the peak. But I bet he thought he could have done it better. God bless ye Simon. So glad that you played with Michael Schenker and Uli Jon Roth too.
His drumming on the track Crises is superb, adding Mike's guitar to that gives something very special.
O M G beyond words
Mi batería favorito! Tuve la suerte de ver la gira de Mike Oldfield y quedé alucinado
So glad that I was at that Crises gig. I recall that the sound was superb.
Crises in one of his masterpieces...the double kick drum is a train!
The snare flam on Crises is incredible near the end before it picks up and goes full throttle.
If I come back to earth some day, I want to come back as Simon Phillips, am I asking too much o my sweet lord? Jaja the best drummer that touch earth and so humble..
Two giants
Such an amazing drummer 🙏🏻
Simon’s drumming made Crises album truly iconic, and that why I love it!🎉
and btw, if the muppets comes again, Simon will be the beast🤣🍻 R.I.P. Buddy
nice one...best quality on yt...TOP
Asså! Tomas Hake och Simon påminner mycket om varann
Best Drummer ever
Insane. Period.
Without Phillips, "Crises" couldn't have been so Great.
still love your drumming!!
The Muppets: Animal
I think Steve Gadd is more like Animal!
😂❤
Animal was actually based on the late Keith Moon (The Who)
Loved Simon Phillips drumming on Mike Rutherfords Smallcreeps day, it’s a bit more subtle than this
cobham school :)
Amazing crisis Doesn’t come up as one of mikes essential compositions. I love TB, but c’mon. There’s so much more to this guy. IMO, crisis was a highlight from his “2nd act” that included great stuff like platinum, 5 miles out . Anyway, great video and solo.
Thank you very much! And you’re right, I agree up to that point. So, talking about that “2nd act”, don’t miss my next Friday Clip.
.
Mike hat unglaubliche Musik gemacht. Simon great
