    My favourite unsolved mystery is where life came from. Its mind-boggling complexity (even in 'simple' cells like E. coli) sure didn't come from random interactions of matter, and the Second Law of Thermodynamics says you can't get order from chaos.

    About the Mayans, that actually only explains what happened to one of their cities, the bigger and first one, located in Guatemala. Then they moved to to what it is now the south border of México, built some big cities too and kept moving. They never disappeared, you just need to go there, for they still live there, you will find them watching us trying to understand something that has never been a mystery to them, but one we have fabricated, and, of course, selling handcrafted gifts to the tourists who visit the archeological sites, which are gorgeous and amazing, by the way (both the sites and the crafts they make).

    One unsolved mistery that puzzles me is related to sleep paralysis. It's NOT what SP is (that's pretty much figured out) or why do people tend to hallucinate during the paralysis (there are plenty of hypothesis on that, too). What makes me wonder is WHY do so many people, from all over the world, young and old, man and female, all hallucinate the same (?) With a few minor possible variations, the content of those horrific hallucinations is almost always similar, no matter to whom or when does the paralysis occur. In general, people report visions of a tall dark shadowy figure in the room (frequently with an old woman alongside) that floats towards them and interacts, either by touching them, putting pressure on their chest or simply pulling the bed sheets on them...
    It's quite scary and strange. After all, hallucinations could and should take on a vast number of possibilities (why not pleasant visions, for a change, or perceptions of different things?) and the fact that everybody all around the world sees and feel similar things defeats all the odds. What the Hell is going on?

    • @Bandin6385
      @Bandin6385 9 років тому

      I've had SP a few times and it was never an old woman or anything like that. It was always seeing something like little aliens or some kind of small creature.
      As for why it's almost always something scary, my guess is that waking up 'paralyzed' is terrifying in itself. That would trigger a fear response in your brain which affects what you hallucinate.

    I have a mystery that I would like solved! Is it real or coincidence? Here is part of it.
    I was at work and headed out the door to go home. A female co worker was standing on the counter wiping down the light fixtures and jiggling in a very interesting way. So jokingly I asked her if she was doing a little dance for me. Her reply was, "you are being wicked man". Not liking that characterization I said back the first thing that came into my mind. I said, "I am not being wicked man I am being wicket man, I am made out of wicker". Then I was out the door and into my car. The radio came on as soon as I turned the key to start the car. The announcer on the radio immediately said, "heard here for the first time anywhere, The Wicker Man, by Iron maiden". Here are the lyrics.
    Hand of fate is moving and the finger points to you
    He knocks you to your feet and so what are you gonna do
    Your tongue has frozen now you've got something to say
    The piper at the gates of dawn is calling you his way
    You watch the world exploding every single night
    Dancing in the sun a newborn in the light
    Say goodbye to gravity and say goodbye to death
    Hello to eternity and live for every breath
    Your time will come, your time will come
    Your time will come, your time will come
    The ferryman wants his money you ain't going to give it back
    He can push his own boat as you set up off the track
    Nothing you can contemplate will ever be the same
    Every second is a new spark, sets the universe aflame
    You watch the world exploding every single night
    Dancing in the sun a newborn in the light
    Brothers and their fathers joining hands and make a chain
    The shadow of the Wicker Man is rising up again
    Your time will come, your time will come
    Your time will come, your time will come
    Your time will come, your time will come
    Your time will come, your time will come
    Your time will come, your time will come
    Your time will come, your time will come
    Then on the way home I stopped at Walmart and headed for the computer software section. Just as I was about to turn the corner and enter the software section the thought came into my mind to look for a Bible codes program. As I turned the corner there was about 10ft of empty shelving four shelves high except for a single box of software directly centered and facing me. It was, Unlocking The Bible Codes. It was the only copy in the entire store that I could find. And I had barely enough money to buy it. And when I got home and got it running the codes indeed existed that indicated that I am indeed The Wickerman. My full name was there, wickerman was there, my birth date and place of birth and more. While, "The Wicker Man", is not in the Bible the idea of purification by fire is. Now it gets interesting!
    The number 57 coincidences started the next day. The number 57 was coming at me from every direction. Instead of raining cats and dogs it was a downpour of 57's. One day I was over my mom's house and I was trying to explain what was happening. She was sitting at the dining room table figuring how much money she saved on gas and I was sitting in a chair watching the news. Just then the news camera panned from the stern of the USS Cole past the hole in the side and stopped, framing its hull number using the whole screen of the TV. The TV displayed a giant 57. Just then my mom announced that she saved 57 cents.
    It turned out that the hull number of the USS Cole was really 67 but because of the style of the numerals and the TV cutting off the leftmost side and top of the 6 it just looked like a perfect 57. Then however the thought came into my mind, "is there a US ship with the hull number 57 and could it possibly have anything to do with me. I was actually praying not and could not imagine how it possibly could. I just wanted this craziness to end. Well there is a US navy ship with the hull number 57 and it is the USS Mitscher. I saw it immediately and was very upset. Mi__ch and ___s_her is what I saw. The first 4 letters of my first name and the first 4 letters of my last name in the correct order encoded in the name of the ship. Unbelievable! Not only that but the only letter that is not used to encode my name is a 't' and can be thought of to represent the endorsement of the cross. Not only that but at the time it was the only navy ship to be named after a foreigner. They had to break over 150 years of navy tradition for that to happen. Not only that but originally it was a different ship with a different hull number. That ship was scrapped and a new one built with the hull number 57. Just as though it was pointing to the resurrection or something.
    Then my mom tells me a story about my birth. She had a list of 10 names and my dad had a similar list. Michael was not on either list. No matter how many times they reworked their list they had no names in common. The name Michael kept being suggested by others so much so that they gave in and named me Michael. Then something strange happened. The head nurse of the nursery came to my mom and insisted that she not name me Michael. Any other name will do but not Michael. This nurse tried for three days to get my mom to change my name. I assume God won that battle and the devil lost. But considering the navy ship it can be understood why God wanted me named Michael.
    There is more. Concerning the song mentioned above there are these two lines.
    "The ferryman wants his money you ain't going to give it back
    He can push his own boat as you set up off the track"
    I am a walkin. It happened when this body was drowning in a mountain lake. So how does this song know that I am not 'pushing my own boat'? Then there is the movie K-Pax that is about a guy whom had drowned and was possessed by a spirit from another world. He was born in Arizona and I was also. His birthday was 7/27/1967 and mine is 7/27/57. There is that 67, 57 connection again. And why is a boat/ship involved again.?
    In the Omen, a movie about the antichrist, there were 7 ceremonial daggers, the aunt owned 27% of the company and the treaty of Rome signed in 1957 in that order. That's my birthday. Why is it that my last name if A=57, B=60, C=63 etc. adds up to 666. So when I "set up off the track" who do you think that the "ferryman" will turn out to be?
    Or does everyone think that this is all just some CRAZY coincidence?

    The greatest mystery of all is why do so many people believe in an historic Jesus of Nazareth. Modern theology agrees that there are no surviving first hand accounts, no contemporary witnesses and even the the gospels lack eyewitness testimony. Yet this is the most popular religion in the world. I think Jesus and Christianity are the most profound fictional events ever to be accepted as true. This religion's eastern Mediterranean foundation is rooted in syncretism, an amalgamation of Greek, Egyptian, Pagan and Jewish religions, beginning 2000 years ago and evolving to the present day

      No, you are incorrect. There are are no surviving first hand accounts, no contemporary witnesses. There are no extant "writings a few decades after said events referencing him...". This is undisputed and uncontested in all but the most fundamental of Christian scholarship. Fundamentalists who deny evolution, archeology, anthropology and most modern scientific theories. The burden of proof is upon you to show otherwise and not to make unsubstantiated, false claims.

    • @callofdutywii1
      @callofdutywii1 9 років тому

      OnePointSix12 'Undisputed" yeah, sure we'll go with that... The writings of Tacitus and Joesphus support my claim. So much for "unsubstantiated false claims" huh? It's not from a primary source, but like I said, first hand accounts aren't common in that age to begin with.

    • @OnePointSix12
      @OnePointSix12 9 років тому

      +Walter White
      Josephus??? What decade are you in? Modern theology concedes that the blurb in Josephus is an interpolation. I have read most if not all arguments for and against this misplaced paragraph and when you look at all the scholarship even the right wingers agree that the paragraph contains some interpolation.
      Your argument using Tacitus is both weak and disputed. According to scholars the original manuscript reading of the name of the group persecuted by Nero is Chrestiani (in the manuscript the word appears in an inflected form, Chrestianos). Christianos is a correction made in the manuscript by a later hand.
      You said there are "writings a few decades after said events referencing him...". I am waiting for something credible, some evidence for your claims or an admission that you were wrong.

    • @wjgranger5
      @wjgranger5 9 років тому +2

      +HowStuffWorks I read it and it's clear that it is a useless gesture by secular organizations to try and deny that year 0 clearly corresponds to the birth of Jesus Christ. It is not a standard by any stretch of the imagination. The term "Common Era" doesn't mean anything whereas BC and AD clearly reference the the event that they draw their date from. And frankly, BCE and CE can be confusing when speaking since they are so similar which prompted my original comment.

The Maya didn't "vanish," and when I did archaeological work in Belize, they lates data from numerous surveys of the city states indicated there was no consistency in collapse between the Maya polities. They all sort of collapsed within a 60-70 year period for their own reasons.

      Thank you +Lord Hades for bringing that up. NO THANKS HOW STUFF WORKS for epic failing and perpetuating the disapearance of the Mayan culture.
      The Maya did not just "up and vanish". There are many Maya people still living in Central America (mostly Guatemala) still struggling for their identity today. It is anglocentric education that would have us belive the Mayans fucked up or had some kind of supernatural experience whipe them out of our world.
      In reality what caused many of the Maya to flea their ancient cities was the European invasion. Which as per usual included the mass murder of the people, and destruction of records and artifacts of the culture.
      By the time colonization was in full swing the surviving Maya people were treated as slave labor and systemically decreased by destroying as much of their ancient knowledge and culture as possible, denying them means to further educate themselves, and inflicting acts of genocide on them, such as massive amounts of rape and murder of women and children, and entire villages. This is one of the eras where the Mayans speak that there were rivers of blood, the blood of entire Mayan villages.
      This continued into the modern era, when U.S. intervention perpetuated the devalidation of the indigenous culture, not even aknowledging them as Mayan, and suppirted military efforts to do away with "rebel commies" which were mostly Mayan. People whose philosophy in life is harmony with nature, including protecting land and natural resources for all. Rejecting the notion of from external powers privatizing and expoitating the land and the people at the cost of the people, mostly Mayan (Guatemala's population is over 80% Mayan, i forget the exact #).
      The struggle to recongize that history and validate their identity, as well as a dignant life today, still continues for the Maya people.
      Research Guatemala's genocide trails against Efrain Rios Montt and other military officers that served under him, (a genocide that was secretly/illegally backed by U.S. forces). Those acts were commited on Mayan towns, and most of the people testifying in the case are survivors of that genocide...Mayan!
      The Maya people have been surviving long enough, insulting miseducation of confused "first worlders" doesnt help in reaffirming their struggle, their existance, or their dignity.
      I hope this has helped clarify, or atleast inspire folks to do their own REsearch.
      Peace and DIgnity for the Maya people!

    Funny ending. "Aspic" when meaning "escape" and "whole civilizotion (or civilizocean) impuded" when meaning to say "whole civilization imploded"? Cute. But, be careful where you are when getting phonetics screwed up. I'm originally of eastern Massachusetts, where Gloucester and Worcester are or were regularly pronounced as Gloster and Worster or even Wooster, f.e. During the 1990s, I went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a work contract. One evening, I went to the nearest bar for the first time and it was ok. It was a place with a large room in which a loud country or western music band was playing, while the entrance was just a bar. There were no patrons in the bar and the door to the band side kept the bar quiet, so I sat at the bar and chatted with the friendly bartender. Then three women who I guess in their 40s came in and sat right next to me at the bar, so I spoke to the woman immediately next to me, saying hello, just starting a little friendly chat; and she blew up because of my phonetics being of Massachusetts and wrong. She knew right away that I was from Massachusetts and got so angry about my mis-phonetics that I wondered if she was going to start hitting me, or worse.
    "Ciivilizotion impuded" for "civilization imploded" isn't just about phonetics and is worse than just being off a little, phonetically. So, be careful; if you don't want to be attacked by a crazily orthodox individual in terms of linguistics, say.
    Just joking; although, the story about what happened at the bar in Cedar Rapids did really happen. Fortunately, the two women who were with the one who went crazy looked at me in sympathetic, friendly ways. Only the one immediately next to me exploded (not expuded :) ) with a fit of anger.

    The notion that the Maya destroyed their own forests on the scale required is absurd, as the forests were essential to Maya agriculture (particularly in the lowlands).
    The idea of a single reason for so many city states collapsing is so simplistic and childish that it should be beneath any serious inquirer into the issue.
    As someone who did some archaeology in Belize in the summer of 2014, I can attest to the prevailing ideas that were being supported by the archaeologists I was working with, including Dr. Jaime Awe: Each city state had its own reason for collapse over a period of roughly 60-70 years. Survey data shows no consistency in environmental stress across the numerous topographical regions inhabited by the Maya. Some may have collapsed from drought, some from volcanic boom-and-bust, others from political pressures, etc., etc. The region is too varied for a catch-all, and this parroted "destroyed all the forests" nonsense doesn't fit at all with the facts I was presented with on the ground.

    If that is the case about the rocks moving then how would it make the drag marks if it were " floating", cos if the weight of the stone is heavy then how would it move, pluss if the ice formed around the rock while the rock is stationary it would look like a floating rubber swiming ring around the rocks waist made of ice, and she did say thin ice i cant see it to be fair.

    I dont buy the sailing stones explanation. If they are 'floating on ice' then it wouldn't leave a track, or at least a track so minute that there wouldn't be edges to the track, which looks like there has been strong friction and downward force at work...

    i would have to go with suicide forest in japan, also known as Aokigahara, at the base of mount fuji. apparent hundreds of people mysteriously commit suicide here... but! not a lot of people know that in japan unsolved murders are chalked up as suicide to lower the crime rate. now, ask yourself this. if u just raped and murdered a teenager and were looking for a place to dump that body wouldn't it be in your best interest that u'd leave it somewhere that it would most likely be misconstrud as suicide. especially, when the forest has a history as it is.

    The Mayan hypothesis its BS...Then like now people use wood for fuel to keep warm and cooking, except that now big corporations have modern machinery to cut down many acres worth of jungle everyday.Despite this modern abuse of the rainforest, it is still there serving the local people. How could it be then, that it was all used up back in the day? Also, Guatemala its a tiny area and most of its rain comes from the ocean and nearby land masses. Which makes it a target for tropical storms and hurricanes. Thus it doesn't seem plausible that "deforestation" was the answer why they disappear.

    that rock thing is bs. Those looked like heavy rocks to me.... and to leave an imprint in the sand like that would take a good amount of weight upon the rock. So there would have to be a tornado speed of a wind gust to move those rock... Wouldn't there be more evidence of this 'wind swept' phenomenon around the area?
