This reviewer seems to miss the entire point of this phone: compactness and pocketability. Today’s phones are already very big and being able to turn them into a small pocketable device sounds so so good. If Samsung does it right they have the potential of changing the phone market and adding a breath of fresh air.
exactly. that´s the point. i do think it´s also great for reduction of time spent on your phone. Was considering buyin one, but decided against it. will wait for the next gen. kinda worried about durability and battery life
It was an....odd omission. Improved portability is the whole point of this form factor. It's like reviewing the first notebook computers and only talking about the fun factor of the new folding desktop machines.
I don't know what some of ya'll do with your phones, but I've had the original ZFlip from day 1 and it still looks brand new. I'm not super gentle with it, just use it normally. I've been using my thumb to press the middle of the screen to close it for thousands of closes now and it still looks fine.

It's very nearly there isn't it? Better battery life, a more useful outer screen, better dust resistance and another $100 lower price will take this mainstream. Even so, the Flip 3 is a remarkable achievement in such a short product iteration cycle.
Being more negative can also push Samsung to improve the next iteration even more. Samsung does care of its feedback. So it's OK if tech UA-camrs explain all the downsides and it does have them.
Ha! I wish! Many Samsung users around tech channels whine about headphone jack and micro SD and it was still removed / not brought back. So I'm sticking with S10+ and then look at the market on where to switch once the support is obsolete on 2023.
I feel that, regarding battery life, the need to basically match all the s21 specs hurt this product, as it couldn't be thicker to compensate the 120hz screen (not sure if it has a dynamic refresh rate either). That said though, usually samsung phones take a week or so to really show their average optimized battery life, something that reviewers usually don't have time to cover.
Yeah, with my S21, the first few days the battery life after a full charge would say that it'd last about 14 hours, then the following week that bumped up to 1 day and 4 hours, and it's been around that time since.

Flip3 is the perfect vlogger phone. The perfect for selfies. Would also be great setting it up like a tiny laptop and playing emulators on it with a Bluetooth controller 🎮. No need of a kickstand.
I remember when I first bought my iPhone 12 mini 4 months ago. Of course I'll be loving it at first. I still do. But boredom arrived quickly within 2 months. Went back using my Essential Phone briefly.
It is definitely different from previous models. The inner surface of the z Flip 3 is definitely closer to glass and has a harder hardness. Most of the people who have used the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip say that the strength of the internal display has definitely been upgraded.
Flip phones will be the common form factor anyway within 3 years like it was 20 years ago. I'm in no rush. It's real benefit is it's easier to pocket but it's still a very tall phone unfolded.
Flip phones does two things. Make things pocketable but while still maintaining having the large display. And it's easier for UA-camrs to record themselves. Fold3 is what future iPads will look like.
Great review! I've been researching the new Z Flip 3. I think the concept is a great one, but I appreciate your comments about it's use daily in the real world. Might be a good idea to wait for the next generation.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it , innovation and change is sometimes is not a good thing mate , like the last car i bought had a 13 year model run , it did not have all the gimmicky wiz bang features of the tech style cars , but i know its simpler design will probably last without a problem for 10 to 15 years. Runs on the board and refinement that comes from years of making a similar product is a good thing . As for samsung being innovative , yes it was innovative of samsung to copy apple removing the 3.5 mm headphone jack , removing supplied buds and charger in the box , and not forgetting going back to plastic backs and lower resolution displays and removing the SD card feature on some of its once high spec models.
My only thing is protection! With the glossy back if you drop it is likely to break. Being a flip are you able to get screen protector and case for it ?
Now this has actual specs I'd like to have on a foldable phone only thing is that $1,000 for less cameras and worse battery is too high. Hopefully black Friday has good deals
IMO I think the flip 3 IS PRETTY DAMN CLOSE to being on the same level of your typical flasgship. Ive been following folding screen tech for years now, and this iteration seems like its made a its biggest leap from novelty to practicality. Yea the camera isnt the best of the best, and the battery isnt the best of the best either, but they're good enough. The flip 3's shortcomings are made up for by its design and features that typical phones don't have.
it's really sad that when new technology comes, reviewers tend to set a high standard to justify them. Sometimes it causes unnecessary panic and potentially harm acceleration of that technology.
Great review. The camera analysis in particular is encouraging, since that was my main concern. Battery life is an issue, but for someone tired of carrying around his brick of a Note 10+, the Flip 3's portability factor is a much bigger deal to me. Still weighing the trade-offs before deciding whether or not to pull the trigger.
I have a Note 10+ too, traded mine for this for £400! Pretty good value I think for a 3 year old phone. I'll have to live with the battery life I guess
Omgosh I'm literally in the same boat as you, with have the huge not 10 plus...but it keeps falling out my pockets 😩. The same things I was concerned about was the camera because I rexord on it foe YT. I'm still undecided as well.

Our Z Flip 3 came in early, and I have transferred everything over from our S10. It took a few hours because we have an SD Card on the S10, but I can report everything came over without issue. The settings, apps, setup, screens, and everything on the S10 came over to the Flip 3. The only settings requiring attention are the ones unique to the Flip 3. We have the Phantom Black and, surprisingly, it is not a fingerprint magnet. The fingerprint reader is quick and responsive! I thought the phone would flip open easily, as shown on many other reviews. No flip of the wrist to open ours. It requires two hands to open. I am not sure the color will matter if you get a case for it. I think a case is necessary because of how the phone feels in my hand when opening and using it. I have ordered several cases to try out. I find it a bit uncomfortable to hold! It is a longer device and feels top-heavy. Once you open it, you have to adjust your grip on it. You cannot adjust your grip to account for the additional length of the phone until you open it. You will find yourself doing this automatically when you reach your thumb up for the fingerprint reader. Even when I do this the Flip 3 still doesn't feel secure in my hand. I believe a case might help with this. I do miss not having a headphone jack as I listen to many audiobooks and like having this as a backup when my Buds+ batteries are drained. Due to the screen resolution, you will have larger black space on the left and right of your screen when compared to the S10 or other phones that are not as long. The screen seems to be just a bit narrower than our S10. The Flip 3 comes set up in Vivid. I had to change it to Natural for general viewing and in the video section as well to reduce blooming and over-saturation. There is one setting that is enabled by default which helps to access the menus without having to swipe down from the top or bottom of the phone. I mention this as a side note because it makes it so much easier to use the Flip 3. Just in case it is not active you access it by going to Settings --> Home Screen --> select "Swipe down for notification panel. Battery life seems pretty close to the S10 with a 3400 mAh. We are getting about 9 hours with the screen refresh rate set to 60Hz and using Dark screen mode. I did notice the battery takes longer to charge and doesn't indicate if it is Fast Charging? Fast charging is set up in the options. Fast charging will not be indicated when connecting a Fast Charger as we saw on the S10. It is there if you pull the notification screen down. You will see Fast Charge there if you are using a Fast Charge adapter. The sound is weak and tinny compared to the S10. For now, I am not sure we will be keeping the phone. I like the ability to fold it and put it in my pocket, for others their purse, or bag but you have to be aware of the gap which could allow dust and other debris into the phone. Some cases seal this gap so it may not be an issue. It might be a bit too tall for those with smaller hands. The extra height of the phone becomes a benefit when taking advantage of apps that use the multi-window function but there are not many at this time but you can force most apps to work with it. I don't feel the Flip 3 is worth it for us to change at this time.
I played around with the new Samsung Z flip 3 at Best Buys and I can definitely say that the Z flip 3 has a faster and smoother touch screen than any Apple phone.
My phone arrives tomorrow. Is the camera bump flat? I'm looking to buy a screen protector for the small screen and the ones on amazon seem cover the camera as well.
It may sound I'm being too negative with the Flip3 but I think it's fantastic. Just remember we all deal with honeymoon phases. I'm just being objective. They all have pluses and minuses.

Here's what needs to be improved. More battery efficiency. Bigger cover display. Smaller overall footprint if flipped open. Creaseless display (could take years). Get it to about $700.
I’m curious how much screen on time you had on the flip 3 to make it drain so fast compare to other phones where you using it all day non-stop or was it sporadic throughout the day like a normal person would do between using other devices or doing other tasks
I actually just went back using my first gen iPhone SE. My Pixel 3 and Essential Phone are retired. Reserving my iPhone 12 mini for 2024. I'm using an SE1 with a 4S, Nexus 5, and Bold 9900 for media.
Te battery may or may not be an issue. It will depend on Samsung optimization and end user. I have seen other reviews where the user was able to get an entire day with out charging. As far as split screen, Samsung does offer a solution that forces all app to use the mode. You have to enable it the labs app.
Almost bought one yesterday but even Verizon couldn't answer this question, hoping you can? I listen to many podcasts on UA-cam, Spotify and Audible for long periods of time. I'll start the program with my lg v60 open, power off, then put safely in my pocket. If there is no power button per se (bixby only) and if closing the clam puts it into an off/close mode, then during my demo, closing the clam shut off any programs I was listening to on my bluetooth earbuds. Is the only way to listen to those live apps while hiking or riding my bike with the phone open then? If the screen on stays on in my pocket, Ill for sure butt dial you! Im assuming if you get a phone call in open mode, then when you shut it, the call is still active, correct? I suppose in the future they could offer front screen support for apps like podcasts, audio books etc, but can't buy this if there is no way to control the open/close screen or a way like my laptop that you can tell the device what to do when you close it? I so want this small fold-able form factor and figured Id just open pandora or spotify or youtube etc then close the clam, put oooh so comfortably in my pocket(my dream phone) and it would stay on? Is there a software solution or did the Verizon demo hide this feature? MITCH

HTC still makes phones, mostly mid-range but not dead like LG...
The HTC Mobile staff was bought by Google. So when buying a Google Pixel phone, you're actually buying a phone made by former HTC engineers.
While I love its design, I am still going to wait a generation or two for them to get to the same maturity level as our current phones.

Fun Fact: the Flip 3 is only as tall as a iPhone 12 Pro Max but looks taller because it’s less wide. So I would say it’s the perfect size!

Ive been following folding screen tech for years now, and this iteration seems like its made a its biggest leap from novelty to practicality. Yea the camera isnt the best of the best, and the battery isnt the best of the best either, but they're good enough. The flip 3's shortcomings are made up for by its design and features that typical phones don't have.

it's really sad that when new technology comes, reviewers tend to set a high standard to justify them. Sometimes it causes unnecessary panic and potentially harm acceleration of that technology.
Great review. The camera analysis in particular is encouraging, since that was my main concern. Battery life is an issue, but for someone tired of carrying around his brick of a Note 10+, the Flip 3's portability factor is a much bigger deal to me. Still weighing the trade-offs before deciding whether or not to pull the trigger.

I have a Note 10+ too, traded mine for this for £400! Pretty good value I think for a 3 year old phone. I'll have to live with the battery life I guess

Omgosh I'm literally in the same boat as you, with have the huge not 10 plus...but it keeps falling out my pockets 😩. The same things I was concerned about was the camera because I rexord on it foe YT. I'm still undecided as well.

My thoughts on the flip are it's cool, but what's the point? What does it really gain me other than a bit of space in the pocket?
I mean the touching points when the phone folds look fragile. If I close it with force, will it be broken?
Our Z Flip 3 came in early, and I have transferred everything over from our S10. It took a few hours because we have an SD Card on the S10, but I can report everything came over without issue. The settings, apps, setup, screens, and everything on the S10 came over to the Flip 3. The only settings requiring attention are the ones unique to the Flip 3.
We have the Phantom Black and, surprisingly, it is not a fingerprint magnet.
The fingerprint reader is quick and responsive! I thought the phone would flip open easily, as shown on many other reviews. No flip of the wrist to open ours. It requires two hands to open. I am not sure the color will matter if you get a case for it. I think a case is necessary because of how the phone feels in my hand when opening and using it. I have ordered several cases to try out.
I find it a bit uncomfortable to hold! It is a longer device and feels top-heavy. Once you open it, you have to adjust your grip on it. You cannot adjust your grip to account for the additional length of the phone until you open it. You will find yourself doing this automatically when you reach your thumb up for the fingerprint reader. Even when I do this the Flip 3 still doesn't feel secure in my hand. I believe a case might help with this. I do miss not having a headphone jack as I listen to many audiobooks and like having this as a backup when my Buds+ batteries are drained.
Due to the screen resolution, you will have larger black space on the left and right of your screen when compared to the S10 or other phones that are not as long. The screen seems to be just a bit narrower than our S10. The Flip 3 comes set up in Vivid. I had to change it to Natural for general viewing and in the video section as well to reduce blooming and over-saturation. There is one setting that is enabled by default which helps to access the menus without having to swipe down from the top or bottom of the phone. I mention this as a side note because it makes it so much easier to use the Flip 3. Just in case it is not active you access it by going to Settings --> Home Screen --> select "Swipe down for notification panel.
Battery life seems pretty close to the S10 with a 3400 mAh. We are getting about 9 hours with the screen refresh rate set to 60Hz and using Dark screen mode. I did notice the battery takes longer to charge and doesn't indicate if it is Fast Charging? Fast charging is set up in the options. Fast charging will not be indicated when connecting a Fast Charger as we saw on the S10. It is there if you pull the notification screen down. You will see Fast Charge there if you are using a Fast Charge adapter.
The sound is weak and tinny compared to the S10.
For now, I am not sure we will be keeping the phone. I like the ability to fold it and put it in my pocket, for others their purse, or bag but you have to be aware of the gap which could allow dust and other debris into the phone. Some cases seal this gap so it may not be an issue. It might be a bit too tall for those with smaller hands. The extra height of the phone becomes a benefit when taking advantage of apps that use the multi-window function but there are not many at this time but you can force most apps to work with it. I don't feel the Flip 3 is worth it for us to change at this time.

Love the flip 3 so far after 48 hours. I am getting many reactions about my new phone. Its an eye catcher.
so from what i've seen in a different review, you can swipe up or down on the viewfinder display to change from wide and ultrawide selfie.
I played around with the new Samsung Z flip 3 at Best Buys and I can definitely say that the Z flip 3 has a faster and smoother touch screen than any Apple phone.

It may sound I'm being too negative with the Flip3 but I think it's fantastic. Just remember we all deal with honeymoon phases. I'm just being objective. They all have pluses and minuses.

Here's what needs to be improved. More battery efficiency. Bigger cover display. Smaller overall footprint if flipped open. Creaseless display (could take years). Get it to about $700.
I’m curious how much screen on time you had on the flip 3 to make it drain so fast compare to other phones where you using it all day non-stop or was it sporadic throughout the day like a normal person would do between using other devices or doing other tasks
Unless you're a game addicted person who lives on your phone all day, it shouldn't be a problem for you to use it on a daily basis.
Still works great as a viewfinder while open to use the better rear cameras for a selfie.

Closing the Flip3 with one hand is very easy. You just need more practice in flipology. Index finger followed by thumb.

Te battery may or may not be an issue. It will depend on Samsung optimization and end user. I have seen other reviews where the user was able to get an entire day with out charging. As far as split screen, Samsung does offer a solution that forces all app to use the mode. You have to enable it the labs app.
Almost bought one yesterday but even Verizon couldn't answer this question, hoping you can? I listen to many podcasts on UA-cam, Spotify and Audible for long periods of time. I'll start the program with my lg v60 open, power off, then put safely in my pocket. If there is no power button per se (bixby only) and if closing the clam puts it into an off/close mode, then during my demo, closing the clam shut off any programs I was listening to on my bluetooth earbuds. Is the only way to listen to those live apps while hiking or riding my bike with the phone open then? If the screen on stays on in my pocket, Ill for sure butt dial you! Im assuming if you get a phone call in open mode, then when you shut it, the call is still active, correct? I suppose in the future they could offer front screen support for apps like podcasts, audio books etc, but can't buy this if there is no way to control the open/close screen or a way like my laptop that you can tell the device what to do when you close it? I so want this small fold-able form factor and figured Id just open pandora or spotify or youtube etc then close the clam, put oooh so comfortably in my pocket(my dream phone) and it would stay on? Is there a software solution or did the Verizon demo hide this feature? MITCH
Probably those apps closing when being flipped will be patched and can be controlled in the settings.
