  • Hashim Sarkis, MIT School of Architecture and Planning dean and professor of architecture and urban planning, defines this moment as the time to creatively and collectively come together and rethink and redesign our built environment. In this session held during MIT’s Better World Weekend on May 14, 2022, the discussion ranges from developing new machine-learning and optimization methods to study complex engineering design problems to embedding disaster preparedness into communities worldwide. The panel continues the discussion, with moderator Nelson Repenning PhD ’96, Sloan School of Management Distinguished Professor and associate dean of Leadership and Special Projects, MIT Sloan School of Management, joined by Faez Ahmed, Brit and Alex d’Arbeloff Career Development Professor in Engineering Design and assistant professor of mechanical engineering; Dina Katabi SM ’99, PhD ’03, Thuan and Nicole Pham Professor; and Miho Mazereeuw, associate professor of architecture and urbanism.
