But, if the lore and observations of the zombies as the series went on is to be believed, humanity would just need to outlast the hordes for a maybe two more decades and then they’d all just decay to dust. The later generations that’d grow up in the apocalypse would be able to adjust more and build long-term communities with more like-minded people. Instead of fighting over the scraps of what used to be.

I think terminus was the big breaking point for the group. Knowing that not only the walkers are out there but even cannibals would make you give up on trusting the world. Not to mention the traumas they went through at terminus. Kill or be killed became the #1 rule afterwards
If they ever do a “What if?” type of series or an alternate universe.. I would’ve love seeing Shane and Rick manage to get along. Shane would’ve 1000% backed Rick here and they would’ve made a great duo.
