If the foot is finished before applying the stencils, the water used to get the stencils on will marr and muck up the foot. It's easier and cleaner to complete the foot after the slip has been applied. The method I use now is essentially the same, but the form is taken further towards a finished profile before stencils are applied.
I don't think so, because there is still slip on top of the stencils which will fire and harden. Although some of this slip might crackle and peel off because it's so thin after the paper burns off, I still think it would be cleaner to just remove before firing

Why didn't you turn the piece first then apply the stencil design? I like the way you applied the sprig.
It's a cobalt slip that'll burn through overlying glazes.
