@@OldMobileUser I think I’d have to make a separate video just for that! Haha. Maybe once I finish doing this for Saturn and PS1 also I can make an overall best shmup consoles video. Believe it or not the Switch would be way up there. Even if hardware isn’t the most powerful it has an amazing variety of shmups released old and new. Pretty wild.

No, thank you for all your work. Many of us are enjoying them and are glad they just keep coming. The least I could do was mention your work and link to your channel.
What an awesome and epic undertaking! I'm really glad I was able to participate and talk about Star Fox 1, Star Fox 2, and Wild Guns! I think the editing came together really well, it was fun to see the visuals you used ha!
Hey dude! Missed you on the chat... or maybe there was so many people on live I just didn't see it haha. But yeah thank you so much for this. And I hope it again sends some more people your way, as your segments were all great and well written. Let me tell you your hot take with Starfox 2 certainly caused some stirs (as I expected it would lol).
Hey Mark, My EU Shirts came in! Love the new design & glad to pick up a second of the old one. I look forward to seeing your segment in Junkie's video! 😁
@@ShmupJunkie yeah I m bummed I missed the premiere! I was actually sitting in a movie with my kids ha. Star fox 2 being a D is a mild take in my take, that game is a gaint cluster ha, all it s good ideas were heavily improved in 64 and it s bad ideas are outright painful (like the overworld and chicken walker)
Nintendo was more than lucky to have Konami backing them so heavily. Just having Axelay, Gradius 3 and 3 Parodius games from them was a HUGE bonus for the console.
@@ShmupJunkie Parodius Da! is such a gem. love the omake mode too. I held a scoring competition for that a couple years back. The hidden extra difficulty is one of the most ridiculous challenges I've seen for a horizontal shooter.
@@WalrusFPGA You’ll definitely enjoy my review on Da! It’s one of the best ports of all time I love it. Easily one of my fav on the console too. I’m not practiced enough to play it on Omake haha. Just the rank on the more sane difficulties is already a challenge. But it’s really my favorite Parodius.
@@Thinaran I'm referring to Schmup Junkie's work as a whole. He doesn't come out with a video on a regular schedule, like most UA-camrs, but when he does come out with one it's one of such high quality & a project of passion, it shouldn't be missed!
@@jonathanlisowski5618 yup, Shmupjunkie's content is pure quality. I've tried to watch that other Electric Underground channel that is often mentioned but sorry to say, I just can't get into it or the host. I think it's an age thing where that host seems to be very obsessed with definitions, labels, and all manner of arbitrary catagorizations. I remember being a youngin` and thinking that way.. just grown out of it; much, more holistic now. I prefer shmupjunkie's more mature deadpan humor and sarcasm style along with the more tight focused editing. :-)
@@TransCanadaPhil Kudos for giving EU's channel a try. I hear ya, his channel is way different but I feel he's more informative (& I love his deep dives into game mechanics & he gets some really great, informative guests) where Junkie's more entertaining & higher production.
@@jonathanlisowski5618 One thing I do love about both ShmupJunkie and EU is they focus on the actual gameplay. With a lot of other youtubers I often get the sense they are more obsessed with just shopping, collecting stuff, and fetishizing the box art rather than actually playing the games, understanding the strategy & gameplay. So that's all good! 😀
Watched this like 3 times and seems like first time watching. The star fox crew ranking give me the nostalgic charm a lot of retro tubers don't make. Can't wait for the next video
Ha! Super glad you enjoyed it that much. I’m hoping the video picks up and gets more finding it in the long term like the mega drive video did. I always try to add some kind of fun or new ranking animations for each console. It was a lot of work making them but they came out really well.
Awesome job! I took my time over 3 days to watch it. I generally like shorter videos that come more frequently, but totally worth the wait for this epic compilation! Hope you get this one up to 1,000,000! It totally deserves it!
Just got around to watching this finally, and - as expected - another absolute masterpiece. These videos aren't only sources of recommendations and fun, but informative on the history of this genre. Its a CRIME that The Algorithm isn't boosting this one, I guess even UA-cam itself (falsely) believes that the SNES has no shmups, lol
You noticed that too huh? Yeah it's a bummer this video is grossly underperforming after a really great start due to all the awesome subs watching and enjoying. But the algo follows overall interest, so it's not youtube's fault. Too many just lack the interest to give it a chance and discover how wrong they may be about the system and it's shooting library. Or maybe there's just much less SNES fans that care about shooting games compared to the Mega Drive. Either way I think it came out great and am really glad you and others have enjoyed it. This library really deserved highlighting.
@@ShmupJunkie This video deserved 10 times the views and yeah it probably didnt help that the snes has a terrible reputation for shooters unlike the mega drive...but dont get discouraged this video was masterclass!
Regarding the bosses in Thunder Spirits dying ridiculously quickly, it was also that way in Thunder Force AC, so the fault for that actually lies with the original arcade. The bosses were significantly tankier in the original Thunder Force III. I don't know why Techno Soft felt the need to change this for the arcade, though. Thanks for the excellent video, by the way. :)
So clear to see this reflected on consoles, the PC-Engine was released in '86 and has over a hundred shooters, the Mega Drive, released in '88 has almost a hundred shooters and the SNES released in '90 has almost sixty titles, comes to show how the shoot-em-up heyday was between the late 80's and early 90's, fortunately the PS1 has many ports and even some exclusives, while the Saturn has less than the PS1, but still a lot. Here's hoping we'll see the 32-bit era covered in a video like this, all the PS1 shooters and the PS2!
I've been getting a lot of requests for Saturn of course, so as long as this videos and these types remain popular and do well, you can bet I'll work on the 32bit systems next. Although I've gotten a good bit of requests for the NES too!
@@ShmupJunkie I'll say that your "Every Shooters" series are the best the UA-cam has to offer, at least from what I follow and specifically for shooters. They have a very upbeat energy and I hope it's at least half as fun to make them as it is to watch them. If you ever decide to cover these systems, I'm sure people will even save them for future reference, starting from the PC-Engine, Mega Drive and now Super NES. With all that, while the SNES has fewer shooters than many others, I feel it compensates by quality over quantity, while the NES is certainly the opposite, but still has dozens of great titles in the genre! I actually thought you already covered the NES and Saturn, but I got confused because what you did were developer-centered videos which include many of these consoles!
Excellent work on this my friend! I know I'm late to the party, but I've been watching this in small pieces during workouts the past few weeks and finally finished it up. I had both a Genesis and SNES as a kid, but I definitely leaned more towards SNES back then so I'm much more familiar with a lot of the games on this list. I just got a copy of Area 88 on the SFC so I'm hyped to finally give that a shot soon. Also learned that you could play as Bomber King in Hector '87 during the Caravan Shooting Collection segment which blew my mind. Keep up the great work dude!
You've knocked another one out the park, absolutely awesome production values which when combined with enthusiasm is a joy to watch, I played all these games in the day and still play the top tier titles today so it's a bit of a naughty treat to see the lesser quality snes games given some deserved screen time. Many thanks for your hard work and I'll be looking forward to the every Saturn shooter vid you must be working on 😉
Thanks for the great comment, much appreciated. This stuff is super nostalgic for most of us and I enjoy making them as much as you enjoy watching them. You can bet Saturn will be upcoming, it's the most highly requested as the next console.
I remember clearly playing or watching my brothers play R-Type III, Choplifter III, Firepower 2000 and Super Turrican 2, among a few others. The 'usually' muffled SNES sound effects and soundtrack (while not always the case) is so unique and nostalgic, I really enjoy it. As a kid, slowdowns never bothered me, even now, since they happen when things get busy I always thought that by slowing down made it more tense, some games do it on purpose such as Street Fighter II, specially when hit by a fireball in the air and a few other instances, too.
Great video. I came here looking for SNES on-rails shooters. I didn't expect to see the Time Pilot 95 patch here too 🙂We spent a lot of time turning that into a standalone game and Svambo did a great job with the new title screen.
I was so looking forward to this video Shmup Junkie and once again you've delivered!! Great work as always. I appreciate what you do for us Retro Game fans. This video was such a treat!!!
Been waiting for this one for quite some time. I'm having to watch it in parts. Your snes and genesis list videos are the definitive ones. You actually play through the games and give a far better insight then other videos who have tried this. Looking forward to what you got in the future.
There's no "M.U.S.H.A." or Truxton equivalent on SNES but those developers who pushed the SNES hardware limitations to make Axelay, R Type 3, etc created their own magic too.
You even included HONG KONG '97!? Must share this to my friends! I'll use this video for my SNES shmup backlog. Great video as usual, Junkie. The Star Fox ranking visuals are hilarious 🤣 Oh, regarding Hong Kong '97, as hilarious as AVGN's episode is, I recommend Ultra Healthy Video Game Nerd's coverage for a much more in-depth info of the game and the developer. It's an interesting tale, like while the game over screen is indeed a picture of a real corpse, it's ripped out from a documentary film.
Oh yeah? Thx for the tip I will go check it out tonight then as I'm curious. I couldn't not include the game. Plus it's a lot more fun to make fun of than actually play.
Absolutely amazing, and Mark's channel is very overlooked he deserves more attention... positive attention 😂. Here is a double thumbs up for both of you guys 👍👍.
S tier video as usual SJ. Hearing Timmy say "are we there yet?" was the icing on the cake (insert chef's kiss GIF). Such a shame that Yam Yam doesn't have a fan translation because it looks impressive. HK97 rightly deserved the F+ rank because it's good for a few laughs.
This a Video I wanted you to make for a long time and I'm really excited. I expected somewhat negative reviews from a few games I really like (Gradius III and Super R-TYPE more specific), but I'm still really happy that you're making a video about the SNES shmups. I remember spending hours playing and learning some of the shumps of the SNES library. Mostly Gradius III, Parodius Da, Gokujō Parodius, Super R-TYPE, R-TYPE III and Pop 'N TwinBee. Pop 'N TwinBee specifically. I didn't had a lot of trouble learning it, but I certainly hold many memories with it. Just hearing "A Walk on The Bottom of the Ocean", brings back so many memories. Not only mentioned that I always discover something new whenever I replay it. I mean… Did you know that you could punch small bullets to make them fly away from you? Or that certain enemies in the Big Airship level turn in to Bells when punched enough times?
I think you and many others will be very surprised to see how many games get very high scores in this video. And I agree PopN is a fantastic game. I was never a big Twinbee player or fan but I can always have fun with the SNES game. I didn't know about the enemies on the airship level turning into Bells though... there's likely a lot of little things in the game I haven't discovered either.
That would be really cool and not easy! Not all those games are easy to emulate and I definitely don’t own one. I’m hoping the MiSTer core gets completed enough for the Sharp so I can use that to play them all.
@@ShmupJunkie I can show you the best way to get it running on your PC, I'm no specialist, but I got everything running really good through Retroarch. Granted, it will surely be nice to see this system covered via FPGA as well!
Man I don't play a lot of older games or have gotten into shmups as a genre but I just wanna say your presentation in this video is fantastic. Like educational and fun to watch

I’ll keep the comment short as you’re bound to get inundated with a plethora of well deserved praise my man so I’ll just say, thanks as always for all the hard graft and dedication for this epic undertaking. 🙌🙌
Thanks again for all the support on social and it was great seeing you in the chat. I look forward to all the comments. I get to take a couple days to not think about the next video and just respond to as many as I can.
Impressive!! The SNES has lots of awesome shoot 'em ups! Hope they get more well known after your video. Most of SNES shooters have already gotten a FastROM or SA-1 improvement hack that reduce o eliminate the slowdowns and make them play smoother. Thanks!!
And I’ll be showing and highlighting some of those hacks in the video too. There’s way too many to show them all so I did a short segment at the end. Plus I put a link to the running list of available FASTROMS.
Glad you're still at these! Another great reference vid. I was a ride or die SNES kid, and for years would have told you that even if other systems had more good shooters, the SNES had the very best. And that Space Megaforce was better than any shooter ever. But TBH in the past handful of years since really getting deep into shmups, the PC Engine has taken the #1 spot in my heart. All those terrible out of tune SNES sound fonts have really not aged well, and the controller is fine but not a good as the Mega Drive 6 button or PC Engine's. You mentioned the fan service in Scrambled Valkyrie...I 1CCed Macross 2036 a couple of weeks ago, and then went to play Scrambled Valkyrie and the wonky music in that game is _tough_ to get through after the perfection of 2036 (which, granted, is a good but not incredibly well designed game). Also, your PC Engine videos Convinced me of the greatness of Gradius II, I think that's edged out Gradius III for me, soundtrack and all. Still, at launch Gradius III was the coolest looking game for the SNES, I drooled over Nintendo Power pictures of it for hours before it came out.
It’s hard to compete with that pc engine library man for just about any console. It’s always going to be my all time nostalgic fav and the one I come back to most. But I was really trying to do justice to the SNES games here as it’s always such an underrated library overall. So I hope people see it was far better as a whole then it’s given credit for. I agree on 2036 that music is untouchable. Hard to compete with the CD reproductions. It’s that and how closely it emulates a lot of what makes Macross popular that I enjoy most about it, even if the game behind it is ok but not great.
Three things that make a huge difference to me when it comes to scrolling shooters in general are that they have fast and fluid animation, allow you to take a few hits without dying, and give you lots of special weapons to play around with and power up. For these reasons, "Super Aleste" is one of my absolute favourite games in that genre.
I never knew there were so many shmups on the SNES. I'm gonna need to check some of them out. UN Squadron was a big part of my childhood though. It's got that classic Capcom charm and is one of the few video games that my dad and I bond over.
Great video! Some really good reminders to go back and play a lot of great games that I grew up with and check out a couple that I missed. One thing to keep in mind though is that a lot of these games were longer than their arcade counterparts because it would be hard to justify releasing a 20 minute arcade game for $60+ on a console in the 1990s.
Thank you so much for this, fella!! Another massive work of passion for all of us retrogaming aficionados. The next to get the treatment will necessarily have to be the Saturn, won't it? 😉
@@richardsix4473 I would but I also think of the 100+ games I’d have to cover! 🤣 Scary about as much as the pc engine video. I’d totally do it I love the NES though
First of all, great breakdown of all the shmups on a system. Your videos that do that for a given system or developer are my favorites and have helped me find so many of the shmups I bought new or used in the last year. Second, in your Cotton 100% view you mentioned the fairy charge attack and I’m so glad you did because I didn’t know it even existed. It wasn’t mentioned in any online guide I saw, doesn’t get mentioned on the button mapping window in the PS4/Switch re-release, etc. So for anyone reading this comment: you hold the bomb button to charge the attack, then fairies start spinning around you and you can release it to fire the fairies at the enemy. This drastically decreases the time some boss encounters take. So thanks for getting me to look for an attack I never knew about in the game. You made me play it better. :)
I've probably played a higher percentage of these than your other (excellent) compilation vids - looking forward to watching this one and seeing the ratings! #SNESFANTASYSHOOTING
Good luck in the contest! I myself discovered some cool games while making it I hadn't yet played, so it was great for me too. I was surprised how highly I ranked so many of them.
Wow mate, the amount of work and love put into this video is incredible! Some amazing games on a brilliant system, who doesn't love Parodius with mad commentary!
Axelay also has an SA-1 version. It is way better now since it is 33% faster. I highly recommend you check it out. Also, many of these games now utilize MSU-1, which effectively puts CD quality music into SNES games, like playing the SNES-CD that was never released. Thank you for this thorough review of the SNES shmup library. Fantastic job!👏👍😎 😊 My favorite shmup from the SNES days has always been Space Megaforce. There aren't enough good things I can say about just how fun of a shooter this game is. So good.
Yup, this definitely was worth all the wait, *especially* for my favorite lineup of shooters out of the three consoles by far (And I'm not even that much into the SNES in general myself, so you know I really, *REALLY* mean it!). Gotta love Mark_MSX's reviews here as well.
Thanks, and so glad you enjoyed it. I hope Mark's guest spots get some more people looking his way and to the channel. He did a great and super entertaining job on all 3 games he did here.
20k views in one day. Incredible. I know this video is going to be heaven. Thank you. So I'm going to save it for when I need it most. May all your dreams come true junkie xxx
Let's hope it keeps growing! By all means save it, enjoy it, watch it twice, whatever gets your through the day or gives you a fun distraction when you need it. People seem to come back to these and like rewatching them, so they do pretty well long term. My dream of the shmup genre making a comeback is one I didn't expect to come true like it has!
Great video! I was a SEGA kid and didn't get a SNES until late in the generation (a little more than a year before the Saturn and PS1), so I didn't get to experience many of these at the time. It's neat to see what I missed and need to try now.
For me, the SA1 hack moves Gradius III to the top of the 16-bit pile, barely edging out Thunder Force IV. I can only imagine how well it would’ve been received had Konami had access to a time machine and been able to bring their later technical prowess to 1991. I was a little disappointed not to see my favorite gallery shooters Battleclash and Metal Combat: Falcon’s Revenge at least not get a mention. Battleclash is little more than a tech demo, but Metal Combat ramps things up with a hidden character, multiple choice-based endings, and some of the best sprite work on the system.
I think the problem with Gradius III's slow down is that nobody was expecting it because the hardware was so new and they thought it should eliminate all those old headaches like slow down and flicker because it was so advanced
The SNES has always been my favorite console since its launch. I still own the overwhelming majority of these. It's definitely not my console of choice for shooters, but I'll swear by R-Type III all day. I think it's still a distant third behind the PCE and Genesis for me on the shooter front, but the overall library for the SNES is my favorite. Weirdly enough, I can think of another rail shooter/RPG hybrid, and it didn't make the list on your PC Engine ranking video. Spiral Wave used a similar concept to YamYam, but in space, traveling between planets and space stations. It's pretty short, but definitely interesting, and one of the guys from the now-defunct thebrothersduomazov site wrote an english guide for it. Great video as always! I love these games, and your enthusiasm is contagious.
Heck yeah! And welcome to the channel. I’ve been making a lot of discovery vids like this so hope you enjoy it. UN Squadron definitely got the love it deserved here.
I usually take some hours out of my sunday evening or a few days to fully watch these vids Junkie.I'm glad to see you pushing excellent content still. The SNES was the console I played the most growing up and it is Sonic Wings/Aero Fighters what really brought me to shmups (alongside NES Life Force!). As always, you did a great job covering a ton of the SNES' Shmup library and gave proper credit to some underlooked bangers (EDF, Macross and Imperium for example). Regarding Gradius 3 SA1 rom patch, there is an updated version of the patch that keeps a more human slowdown for certain parts and bosses. Vitor Vitela is a genius with his SA1 romhacks, he literally revived a bunch of games by himself. The SNES ports of Parodius are great and balanced, some people would argue Parodius and Gradius III are better on SNES than Arcade (not everyone, but a ton of people would agree with that!). Same goes to Pop'n Twinbee... as a matter of a fact Konami could do no wrong on the SNES. Keep up the good work Junkie! and Mark / @The Electric Underground. I always found it weird how the big 3 (Gradius Darius R-type) and the other big 2 (Raiden and Thunder Spirits) all had games on the SNES, but the Genesis had _by far_ a stronger lineup of shmups (and ports!). SA1 hacks and some of the original ideas on the console (as well as Konami going all in on the console) make it a better console than what general internet discourse will lead you to believe. BTW Mark, I absolutely agree the Natsume library is extremely underrated, at least TANGO software is still alive (and yes, they're still the same devs).
As someone that never had a SNES and certainly never did a dive into the shooter library due to its slowdown reputation I appreciate this video, quite an eye opener. Still not a fan of the SNES audio chip so maybe I’ll just try the ones with an A+ soundtrack. Good work as always!
Sweet dude! Just starting and I love that you're continuing this video format. Still excited about that NES/Famicom video some day. Though it will probably be a 5 hour video, lol.
Hahaha yeah I fear that one. Now that all 3 16bit videos are done I’m thinking of doing a big showdown video of the 3 consoles. Like a culmination and ranking the best across categories
Really fun to see you're a fun of BioMetal! I played that one a lot back in the day, and never see anyone talk about it. A lot of it might have to do with the music, but I wouldn't have replayed it so much if the gameplay wasn't good as well. The shield mechanic is a lot of fun to learn to use effectively.
And the music in the original Japan version is outstanding too, many prefer it. I really do dig this one yeah and it's even better with the Fastrom if you never tried it that way before.
Just a couple hours away from premiere! Looking forward to everyone finally getting to see and enjoy this video. It’s comments like this that keep me going and knowing I’m contributing to the genre having a comeback.
Awesome! I love these feature length reviews you make, i keep finding more cool stuff that I missed out on and need to try. This review especially brought back a lot of fond memories of all the great snes shooters (and d-force lol) that I loved playing. Thanks for making these and also for the shout out! I'm not sure where you go from here (neo geo maybe?) but I will for sure keep watching!
First off, thank you so much for letting me use several games worth of footage from your awesome runs on the Hardest modes. I don’t know how you do it with games like DForce and Strike Gunner lol. But it’s so great showing some of that gameplay, especially for some ridiculous modes like Funny on Phalanx. Once I started this video I realized how many SNES games you cleared the hardest modes on and posted them. I had to give you a dedicated shout out in the description and throughout the video. So thanks again for your awesome content as well. Watching some of your gameplay is both valuable and entertaining. And I’m honored to know this video may have helped you discover some more to check out and maybe run as well! Neo Geo would be really fun and I’ve already recorded all my game intros for it from my collection. Saturn may be next too as it’s by far the most requested. That will make for one killer video!
@Shmup Junkie Thanks for the kind words! Saturn would be cool but that's a lot of shmups to review! I was saying maybe neo geo to give you a bit of a break with a smaller set of games lol. Regardless of what you end up doing i look forward to your future reviews and videos!
I don't want to watch movies, tv series or tv anymore because they are way too boring compared to what some youtubers like you are producing. Thanks for the amazing work, you make living on this freak show timeline bearable.
Ha! I'm not the only one not watching much any other TV anymore then. Glad I can still keep people entertained and keep this genre going for a while longer.
Well that's two hours of my life out the window. It was totally worth it though. Great work as always! :) My only gripe is the lack of games like Total Carnage and Super Smash T.V. The later is a god-tier game on the platform, IMO. Just odd to see those missing, but then have something like Wild Guns on here. That said, I'd love to see a run 'n gun focused video later on, if that's what you consider them.
I had no choice to omit them I did consider it though. If I do those I have to do all the run n guns not just vertical and I end up with Contra, Pocky too and everything in between. Zombies, Soldier of Fortune etc. I skipped them on the MD video too for that reason. I felt there are so many and really good ones that they’d deserve their own video someday. I didn’t want to cram run n guns in with mostly pure shooters. In fact I do think there are some other gallery shooters like wild guns I may have missed! That I should’ve included. Wild Guns was kind of a Mark special. He loves the game so much I wanted to let him do a segment on it 😅
Your welcome! And thanks for leaving a comment after enjoying it's appreciated. Love making these so am always glad when everyone gets to enjoy them live with me during the premiere.
Awesome video! In UN Squadron I would always use the mega crush for those grinding parts. You just have to time it right, but of course the mega crush cost more money but maybe worth it because it was faster.. idk 🤷♂️ Ill never forget how much fun I had with that game when I was a kid!!
2 things I learnt from this video.....Video System became Psikyo O_o and Sonic Wings / Aero Fighters on SNES is excellent, thanks! I'd only played it on MAME / PS1 / Saturn so far
Bummed I'm only seeing this Monday morning, but stoked to have it on a Monday morning! These complete console dives are awesome, and well worth the wait every time! Yes, I'm commenting before watching! I know I'll love it.
Ha! Well by now you've already watched some. Take your time and enjoy. It's not going anywhere and people seem to like coming back to them multiple times as a reference. Maybe a decade or two from now I will too once I'm truly old and forget half of it lol.
If I could post pics in replies I’d have a Vizzini meme here front and center 😆. At least you’ve now found it so please enjoy. I’ve done one for every 16bit console now and some for developers like Konami as well.
@@ShmupJunkie Yeah man I've seen em! Love those videos and been a long-time sub, that's why it's so weird the algorithm buried this video for me. Anyway great job as always bud.
Amazing job once again on an amazing video! One thing that's telling about how good the games are is that a hardcore shmup expert like PEG spent so much time with them. You don't go through all that for no reason.
Thanks man. I was actually surprised when I was looking at his videos how many SNES games he played through and got the HARD clears on. He really focused on them. So I didn't originally intend to use SO much of his gameplays, but it was inevitable. He has the market pretty cornered on legit HARDEST playthroughs for far more of the games than anyone else. At some point I decided he needed a special shout out and across a handful of the games for how much time he dedicated to them.
Totally worth the wait brother I loved it. Shooter/Shmups are one of gamings pure forms while helping promote some of the most savage/beautiful sound tracks in gaming history the SNES is amazing although it doesn't have Ranger X or truxton lol it's such a great console and this video really let me know about totally bodacious games that I didn't know I needed to try and play. Rock on brother fully full on robo chubby of a video bro thank you.🤘 P.s. Gradius III music is fire AF
your god damn right, for sure brother. And thanks for the help with getting to discord the other day I'm straight lacking when it comes to social media dude total dog shit at it. If you know of anybody looking for some Shmups they are making and need some music made for them. Let me know, I might be able to help/ provide if ever need be. The indie portion of the game development is such a vital organ of gaming right now/ and always will be and if I could contribute or help in anyway I would for sure. Because without bad ass music to back up your bad ass game...... Well us shooter fans need that auditorial vibration to keep that robo chub at high noon. Your a badass and thanks for all the hard work and entertainment it's very appreciated 😆🤘
These Every (Console) Shmup Ranking videos are now my favorite videos on UA-cam, full stop. I’ve made multiple purchases because of these videos and it looks like I’ll make even more now! PC Engine, Mega Drive, Toaplan, Konami, Super Famicom… What’s gonna be next?!?!
Next? Saturn and/or PS1 I'm guessing? Or maybe Neo Geo first if I could use a break as that wouldn't be quite as long a video but still a really fun one. We have options!
@@ShmupJunkie - For sure; you have a lot of options. Everyone knows how awesome the Saturn is, but PS1 almost feels underrated. People overlook how awesome a console it is for shooters. (Man, my copy of Harmful Park sure cost me 💀). And I’ve just started collecting for Neo Geo- MVS because I was too late to the party to go the AES route), so that would be awesome to see too. Love your videos, brother. Know how appreciated your efforts are! Really looking forward to All Your Base Are Belong to Toaplan!
I just got Galaxy Wars for the Vectrex and it added more to the formula than the SNES version, granted it is newer! Great video per usual! I wish I took notes to see what to toss on to my everdrives with these but I always just rewatch over and over again!
Thanks dude! And I always love seeing the OG folks here still with me and enjoying the videos. I know you remember the very first stuff I ever put out and the dumb silly fun I was having. It's been a ride.
Great video! The SNES had better shmups than people give it credit for. Also, thanks for showing some love to Super Aleste, I liked it so much. In fact, I later learned that a Super Aleste manga existed and after years of searching I managed to import a copy from japan and create an English translation of it :)
@@ShmupJunkie It's in many sites now but originally I uploaded it to mangadex (I'm not sure if I can post links here, but a quick search for Super Aleste does the trick 😉). Enjoy!
@@ShmupJunkie Cool! It was just a single volume so it's not hard to read all of it. I think it did have an interesting take on the enemy, especially when you realize that this manga predates Evangelion.
Another phenomenal video showcasing the system's library of STG's, just amazing stuff man! The day you drop one of these for my personal king of shooters, the mighty Saturn I might just cry manly tears of jubilation! Keep up the great work SJ and thanks for all that you do for us STG fans out there!

Hey Mark,
My EU Shirts came in!
Axelay DOES what Genesis DON'T!!!!
Nintendo was more than lucky to have Konami backing them so heavily. Just having Axelay, Gradius 3 and 3 Parodius games from them was a HUGE bonus for the console.
@@ShmupJunkie Well said!!!
Disagreed There's also genesis games have best visual effects, close to SNES effects! So Genesis is still does what nintendon't!
It's a really good day when Schmup Junkie comes out with something epic like this. Quality over quantity definitely resonates here.
Sure, but this video has both!
UN Squadron is still probably my favorite shooter ever. This makes me wanna play it again. Awesome vid!!
my top 5 of snes shmups are R-Type 3, Super Aleste, Cotton 100%, Rendering Ranger R2 and Axelay. These are my best shmup of snes.
Awesome job! I took my time over 3 days to watch it.
I generally like shorter videos that come more frequently, but totally worth the wait for this epic compilation! Hope you get this one up to 1,000,000! It totally deserves it!
The master of alluring thumbnails has returned.
It took a lot of practice and trial and error to get there!
Looking forward to it.2 hrs of 16-bit goodness. Just awesome stuff.
I'm glad to finally have it ready for everyone to enjoy! It sure took long enough haha
This gem needs to be moved into the "Nostalgia & History" Playlist. I love watching that Playlist before bed. 🤘
Good catch! I forgot to do that. I’ll make sure to add it to that playlist. Thank you!
@@ShmupJunkie NES/Famicom is also a fantastic system for shooters!
@@roberto1519 I’m honestly afraid of doing it because there are around 100 of them lol. Tons of good ones but also a lot of serious jank! 🤷♂️
Thanks for this historical, monumental piece of work, mate ^^ Top tier stuff, as usual
You're welcome, and as always thanks for watching and enjoying and leaving a comment. I'll keep doing these long as I'm able.
The amount of efforts in these videos are just astonishing. Inspiring even.
Superb review of SNES Shmups with your trademark top-notch production values.
And this time I watched it until the end before leaving a comment! 🤣
Been waiting for this one for quite some time. I'm having to watch it in parts. Your snes and genesis list videos are the definitive ones. You actually play through the games and give a far better insight then other videos who have tried this. Looking forward to what you got in the future.
Looking forward to this. The SNES is rather underrated when it comes to shmups ❤
It certainly is! I even surprised myself at the end when I counted up all my top tier scores.
There's no "M.U.S.H.A." or Truxton equivalent on SNES but those developers who pushed the SNES hardware limitations to make Axelay, R Type 3, etc created their own magic too.
@@wizkaqueefa9003 There is no home video game system where Truxton is among the best shmups
@@etymonlegomenon931 Hence MUSHA coming in front of Truxton, Tatsujin on PC Engine is easily top 5 but just my opinion.
@@wizkaqueefa9003 No I'm pretty sure you put MUSHA before Truxton because you aren't familiar with any other Genesis shmups.
You even included HONG KONG '97!? Must share this to my friends!
I'll use this video for my SNES shmup backlog. Great video as usual, Junkie. The Star Fox ranking visuals are hilarious 🤣
Oh, regarding Hong Kong '97, as hilarious as AVGN's episode is, I recommend Ultra Healthy Video Game Nerd's coverage for a much more in-depth info of the game and the developer.
Fantastic work on this video as always! Truly was fun watching from start to finish and brought back so many memories!

It's funny how sometimes I sound just like Timmy when I say certain things... it's almost like we're the same person or something. Thankfully not 😂
This a Video I wanted you to make for a long time and I'm really excited.
I didn't know about the enemies on the airship level turning into Bells though... there's likely a lot of little things in the game I haven't discovered either.
awesome... I have beaten popntwinbee and I think I may have ignored the punch for a lot of the game! haha :)
Ahh yeah! I'm loving this series. Hope to also see a Sharp 68K version some time down the line.
My first two SNES purchases were UN Squadron and Zelda. And I played both a hell of a lot especially UN Squadron.Great video 👍🏻.
I never did get to own a SNES as a kid so I played what my friend had. But luckily he liked shooters too!
U.N. Squadron remains my SNES nostalgia timepiece, and is easily the game I spent the most time playing on the system.

And I’ll be showing and highlighting some of those hacks in the video too. There’s way too many to show them all so I did a short segment at the end. Plus I put a link to the running list of available FASTROMS.
#SNESFANTASYSHOOTING
One of the Best Channels for us veteran gamers. Thanks You sir.
Oh you can count on it. That one is highly requested!
Gotta do PS1 as well! That system is also another underrated one for SHMUPs
@@opa-age Big time! And you bet people will know it by the time it ends. PS1 was awesome for the genre.
@@ShmupJunkie How about some 8-bit goodness?
I think of NES Gradius, Salamander, Crisis Core, etc…
Fantastic job!👏👍😎 😊
My favorite shmup from the SNES days has always been Space Megaforce.
No half measures with Shmup Junkie. Another epic production incoming.
Nope! It may take 2 months to make but I'm going to do my best and make sure it's as good as possible.
If I was following you on twitter hard enough, I would have seen this coming but man, am I excited to see this one.
I only announced it on Twitter today that it's coming tomorrow, so I don't think you missed anything. It's been a long time coming.
holy crap, youtube actually recommended a channel I think would be awesome for once. great video 👍. U.N, squadron is an awesome game.
Heck yeah! And welcome to the channel. I’ve been making a lot of discovery vids like this so hope you enjoy it. UN Squadron definitely got the love it deserved here.
@@ShmupJunkie I'm gonna check out the other lists too later. you did a great job on this video subscribed.
The channel I knew I needed but didn't know existed! Nice vids mate
Thanks! Well I’m glad you found me then and please enjoy. I’ve got a lot more like it.
What an awesome video! Thank you my friend for the great memories you bring. Cheers from Chicago! 🤝💥🍻
As someone that never had a SNES and certainly never did a dive into the shooter library due to its slowdown reputation I appreciate this video, quite an eye opener. Still not a fan of the SNES audio chip so maybe I’ll just try the ones with an A+ soundtrack. Good work as always!
Finally Super EDF gets the respect it deserves. Imo one of the best shmups and my favorite on the SNES beside Un Squadron.
@@ShmupJunkie SNES/Turbo/Genesis Showdown!? Hell Yeah that sounds awesome.
Excited for this video! Your enthusiasm about shmups got me into the genre, so thank you for that!
My only gripe is the lack of games like Total Carnage and Super Smash T.V.
He loves the game so much I wanted to let him do a segment on it 😅
Very very beautiful video !!! Awesome work 👏👏👍👍
A true pleasure to watch, thanks for this great moment in your company 🙏🙏
UN SQUADRON #1 !!!!!! Lets go!
UNSQ will be getting the serious respect it deserves.
It’s always such a pleasure man. Thanks for another incredible video!
Lol imagine UA-cam not recommending me this video for five whole months. Inconceivable!
Heck yeah, and thank you for watching and enjoying. No other genre gets the robo chubby chuggin' like some good shooting 😂
your god damn right, for sure brother.
Hell yes! I know this will be just as good as the PC Engine and Megadrive videos!
And I hope it does as well as those videos too. It's a fantastic library of games and very much deserves it.
Very well made video, great content and production value!!!
Thanks! It sure takes me a long time to make but it always feels worth it.
Great job brother! Been a sub since day one homie and I’m proud of you man
Thanks dude! And I always love seeing the OG folks here still with me and enjoying the videos. I know you remember the very first stuff I ever put out and the dumb silly fun I was having. It's been a ride.
For me, Axelay is number one.
U.N. Squadron and Super Aleste come a split second, however.
Great video! The SNES had better shmups than people give it credit for. Also, thanks for showing some love to Super Aleste, I liked it so much. In fact, I later learned that a Super Aleste manga existed and after years of searching I managed to import a copy from japan and create an English translation of it :)
Oh really? I didn’t know there was a Super Aleste manga and would be curious to check it out. Especially translated. Where would I find that?
@@ShmupJunkie It's in many sites now but originally I uploaded it to mangadex (I'm not sure if I can post links here, but a quick search for Super Aleste does the trick 😉). Enjoy!
@@Vircon32 Will do thx! I’m just curious as I’m not familiar with it.

Superb video dude! I’ve been on the fence about the Macross game for awhile, but not any more 😃
Absolutely don’t sleep on Macross it’s a phenomenal game whether you’re a geek for the original series or not. I would’ve flipped had I known it existed back then.
Super Nintendo is one of my favorite consoles of all time,
and I have played several great shooters like Parodius Da!,
Gradius III, R-Type III, Axelay, and Space Megaforce. It is
so tough for me to choose which game is my favorite one.
It's always very hard for any of us because of the nostalgia we have. Though I guess I could give a vote to Parodius Da! as it's the only one I gave an S+ rank to.
@@ShmupJunkie Parodius Da! was my childhood! I was addicted
to that shooter even though it was simplistic compared to the later
