Immigrants are why you can't afford a house in the UK

  • Let's cut the bullshit before reality kicks us up the ass, #immigration is the reason no one in the UK can afford to buy a house anymore. No matter what you think politically on this, reality can't be denied forever. In the next 10 years, the housing market will correct itself, so hold off the market until then.

This isn't true. The reason is because home owners vote to increase the value of their property, so it directly undermines the democratic system, and because assets aren't taxed like income, so over the last 14 years while the tories have been inviting billionaires, and creating billionaires with their rigged economy, those billionaires then invest in assets (peoples homes), both decreasing the stock and artificially inflating prices because there is a market for people to pay over the odds.

I think supply and demand has to come into this at some stage, which undoubtedly immigration has an impact on but I feel that it misses the bigger picture that housing is so unaffordable because it is bought as an investment rather than as a home. I'm not talking about the people that have worked all their lives and own one or two rental properties for them to retire on, I'm talking the multi billionaires that own such massive amounts of homes, public services etc. that we can't even begin to imagine. Wealth inequality is the fundamental problem, but there is a lot of "propaganda" being said trying to make us angry with immigrants and blame it all on them, whilst the flithy rich continue to get richer.

Something like 98% of the rental market is made up of landlords who own fewer than 10 houses. And those landlords are selling up as the tax incentives have dried up and landlord and tenant law has swung heavily in favour of the tenant.
Pension funds look for blocks of Build to Rent apartments because they provide a stable income stream which they use to pay out the pensions. They also provide generally high quality living conditions (at a price obvs) and professionalise the rental market. At the other end, there are plenty of people living in shockingly bad & dangerous conditions.
Unfortunately Labour has only one answer to all problems - build more social housing & now they don't even need to look nice. Obviously taking their lead from China.
There's no silver bullet but it's 100% a fact that immigration has driven population growth for the past 25 yrs. But if a politician admitted that, they'd have to do something about it and our economy relies on immigration because Blair & his successors found it easier than training our own doctors & nurses etc.

Pretty sure it's foreign investors hiking up housing prices under the Tories so they could make more money and the terribly slow rate planning permission cases get put through. The Qataris, Russians and Saudi's own more property and land than pretty much every major real estate business in the UK. (individual) We have houses that are available, they're just either in unliveable conditions because councils have no money to do them up and use them as council estates or they're priced far too highly by landlords that know they can get away with it. All of that combined has led to housing shortages not migrants, migrants just sped up the issue.
Basically mismanagement on every level of govt over the past 14 years. Still wasn't good before then either, it's just politicians being greedy as usual.

@@norffcinvesting No my argument was that we need to build more houses as a result of most housing being unliveable or unaffordable. Meaning there are houses that could house people but there are several reasons for people not moving in. Many of the new build luxury apartment complexes are empty and could house people, but those who need it can't afford it and they aren't ever going to be used by councils to house anyone because they're owned by real estate giants.

Humberside & North Yorkshire are extremely poor, and so you'd expect properties round those parts to be on discount, but no. Nowhere near as bad as London, but you'll still see a 2 bed new build, likely with poor build quality, trying to go for £250k here.

I do agree with what is being said here but I think it's important to point out that paying rental is just making somebody else wealthy. If you buy a property you will have asset value in the long run and usually property values still rise. If you spend 10 years renting at £1000 per month (which won't happen for many reasons) that's £120,000 of you're life's income down the toilet.....if that rental was paying a mortgage instead then you might be halfway to owning a property outright but probably £100,000 of that £120,000 is still yours in asset value, quite possibly more if property has risen in value.

What's gonna happen to those properties when those communities go back to their homelands? The properties aren't just gonna evaporate. There will be empty properties after these people have gone home, causing the price of those properties to plummet in an attempt to get them sold.
Supply and demand. Simple as. Reduce demand.

Immigrants get a realistic rental allocation and kitted out property.....how can anyone on a basic wage compete with that. Just wait until the family caravans start arriving. Rents are so high a non english speaking immigrant can't afford to get a job.

The brits are partly to blame for allowing things to get this bad, however I have faith it'll all work out. This Labour government will actually be great. It'll be the kick in the balls the brits need to stop watching the footy and actually do something for once.
