I AM SINISTAR

- Because I wanted a simple video of Sinistar's words of awesome without anything added to it.
This is Sinistar, from a 1982 arcade game of the same name. The game was developed by Williams Electronics. The objective is to destroy the title character as he chases you through space.
While some are under the mistaken impression that it is the first game to feature voices - although many credit it for being the first to use voices as successfully as it did - it was the first to use stereo sound (only in the sit-down arcade cabinets). Sinistar's voice is provided by late radio personality John Doremus. An inside joke within the development team is that "Run, Coward!" sounded like "Ron Howard", which led them to dub the game "Opie-star".
Although it originated as an arcade game, it's been ported on several Midway/Williams arcade compilations (SNES, Dreamcast, GBA, XBox, PS2 to name a few). A while back it could be played online for free on Midway's website, used as a tech demo to demonstrate the capability of Macromedia Shockwave with an impressive port. But with Midway going under, it has since gone offline.

"I am Sinistar!
Beware, I live!
Run, Run, Run!
Beware, Coward!
Run, Coward!
RAWWWAAAARRRGGGGHHH!
I hunger!"
The wisdom, the magic, the inspiration, the mystery, and the philosophical rants by none other than the deadliest force in the galaxy, SINISTAR. He hungers for his burrito. I know "I hunger, Coward!" is missing, but it's something. Now try going to your job and saying what he does to everyone. You can't. The fact that Sinistar can means he rules you. And 30 years later his scream still gives people the chills. - Ігри
The Sinstar roar is probably one of my favorite digitized voice samples ever. At high volume it is absolutely pants-shitting terrifying.
Geez, that terrifyingly scary O.O
And satisfying to hear when you manage to land a hit with the mines.

This thing is still the stuff of nightmares.
This and Lou Ferrigno as the Incredible Hulk were my childhood nightmare fuel. The '80s were a great time to grow up but there was scary stuff out there! I never defeated the Hulk, but I'm not scared of him anymore. It was a triumph of my young life collecting enough Sinibombs to blow Sinistar to bits!

I had a nightmare with a more bizarre and extremely grotesque versionno Sinistar calked Shatturn or somehing (had to do with Saturn) It was more complex but you had 3 hits until death. Then after I kiled it I had to defeat it in real life which I failed and it was terrifying upon death.
I remember, as a kid, running through an arcade and nearly plowing headfirst into a Sinistar cabinet. When I looked up, it just SCREAMED at me and I ran away.
Such was the power of Sinistar.

"Run Run Run"
This game is so scary! I first played it on the William's Arcade collection for SNES and from what I can recall the only sound you'll hear is Sinistar's voice. So you're collecting bombs for about a minute or so and all is happy and quiet until suddenly "BEWARE I LIVE!" I nearly had a heart attack when this big floating head zipped on to my screen and chomped my spaceship. Ah the memories...
Blue Lotus That's hilarious XD
Oh yeah, great write-up. I played this on a stand-up coin op in the UCLA Student Union in the early 80's, and or maybe in Westworld. Exactly, you're collecting crystals or bombs or whatever, and not only "Beware, I live!" but then "I HUNGER" Such anticipation and terror!!
I first played this at summer camp and the sound was busted.
Then I played it at a some arcade in the dark. When I heard him it scared me. When I heard the roar I freaked!

The first time I played this game, even though it was quite some time after it's original release, I about pissed myself when I heard that roar. It's not just a regular roar. It's like this humanoid scream mixed with the growl/roar of some large predator or otherworldly beast. Essentially like the closest thing to what I can imagine an actual demon wailing right before attacking sounds like.

Probably won't happen but it'd be cool.
I love the roar, but hearing it enough times made me realize something.
It's NOT just a roar.
Sinistar is bellowing "RUN".
And that makes this infinitely scarier, somehow.
Oh my God he is that's terrifying
OMG you are right. That makes it sooooo much worse.
The "I hunger" is almost comedic
The terror of the sinistar doesn't come from merely from it's incredibly loud booming voice and wickedly fast speed it chases after your ship and kills you after it's creation, it also comes from the fact that before the sinistar even appears the worker and warrior ships endlessly are harassing the player and keeping them from mining crystal. By the time the sinistar appears, the player is either caught completely unaware for the new enemy they are about to face and quickly killed off(if they are a first time player and have very few crystals to fight him with) or an a adrenaline charged player who is nearly at their wits having to deal with the warriors/miners who is made aware that their time is now up and now they have to contend with sinistar as well. No matter what kind of experience one had with the game, upon the first time hearing the sinistar's voice after its creation one was either aware (or soon to become aware) that they were up you know what creek without a paddle if they didn't have enough sinistar bombs on them to deal with him. This made it difficult for anyone to maintain their wits long enough to mine or send out enough bombs to rid themselves of him. The experience is not that different from what one might experience in a jump scares in FNF or horror movies except that the terror can still come even if one knew what is about to happen.
Beware guys, he lives
Amen... I'm a grown ass man now and that scream just turned me back into a scared 8 year old at the arcade.

This scared me the first time I played it.
I had no idea how to play, and that scream. Jesus.
I can't stop thinking about how it sounded undigitized.
In the arcade the scream is so loud that everybody in the room immediately turns towards the cabinet. Hearing it while I’m playing the game induces so much fear in me that it makes my blood run cold.
I don't know why, Was my favorite game of all time. Played that thing all day long in the arcade. Had a sit down style game, all comfy and reclined, speakers up behind your head. Used to dig my feet in and just go freaking crazy. When I was getting into it I had to have one person on each side to hold the game from rolling over. I would have one leg sticking out the door, and the other foot on the roof. Was crazy intense. Would get it so wound up you could only get one crystal mined from an asteroid. then would be mining crystals while sinistar would be chasing me. I had a maneuver to escape him. Watch for him to be flying into the screen, full throttle right at him, hit shields and jerk the joystick in the opposite direction, when you hit you would shoot about 20 screens away from sinistar and gain a few seconds to mine some more crystals. I wore that machine out on several occasions. Probably played it 5000 times. Just think of the quarters...

Am I the only one who want's a Sinstar movie?
I'm just saying, if freaking Asteroids has movie rights, why not Sinistar? As 8 bit games go it actually had a story for a space shooter. There's a group building a giant space entity with a vengeful and evil personality, the workers are using asteroids materials to build it, and a lone human ship is using those same materials to make bombs to stop construction and kill Sinstar itself. I think you could make a viable movie out of that. Say these aliens start using our solar systems asteroid belt to construct sinistar and the goverment's used a modified crashed spaceship to go out and stop them, have a small crew of likable characters, a hot shot pilot, a hardend jaded gunner, some scientist, and bam you have the setup to a summer blockbuster.
I can just imagine the big reveal scene, despite the crews best efforts the aliens finish Sinistar and the crew drift past an asteroid and then see Sinistar, a machine skeletoid face the size of a planetoid, looks down on them and says it's name for the first time in the movie. It's voice coming through on the spaceships monitors. "I AM SINSTAR. BEWARE' I LIVE" and then heads straight for Earth and they have to stop it with the sinistar bombs the scientist have cobbled together with asteroid material and scrap alien tech before the entity get's there and destroys earth.
I'd watch it.
We've had The Last Starfighter... I mean, why not with this one?
and you made me want to see a nonexistant movie...
Abso-friggin-lutley I would watch that!
