Better way to model sheet metal: Always make your initial extrude with as many flanges as possible, then add other flanges/faces. For this, a proper way would be to make a U shape part first, unbend it to add reliefs/planar face if needed, then bend it back and make the cutouts, holes.. etc directly on the face you want to get desired dimensions. Sometimes you have to unbend to make cutouts that go into a bend. More efficient and practical for future use. Avoid starting with flat face if possible.

It is more of a how too than tutorial. Tutorials have an explanation (as you suggested) and don't include errors for you to make as well. it was still pretty informative despite its frustrations.
