- www.umc.org/videos. National United Methodist Church was founded in the 1800s to represent Methodists from across the United States in Washington, D.C. Churches and individuals from all the states, including President Abraham Lincoln, gave money for the construction of the original building. Today, National United Methodist Church seeks to be a welcoming congregation and set an example in areas of social justice, community outreach and inclusiveness. “I love that we have the history, just the beautiful façade. But we also have the beautiful spirit inside,” says church member Bill Potts.
