The fact that when Phil approached Paul, Heather Mills was there might provide some clue to Paul's rather uncharacteristic response. Heather reportedly had little time for Paul's social circle, famous or otherwise, and Paul wasn't always the happy gregarious musician of old around that period.
@@glendalangley1877 Three of the four Beatles were known for physically being abusive to their women. The one legged blonde, Heather Mills claims that Paul McCartney regularly beat the plain looking Linda Eastern daily through out their long marriage. If you look back at the many clips and photographs of Linda McCartney over the years, you can clearly see she was an abused, tormented woman that was forced to endure unspeakable violence, behind closed doors. Most of the ones used were Paul’s but the others do have loops on the song. What matters though is the song wouldn’t be the influential song it is today with Paul
Never meet your heroes. When they turn out to be asses not only to you lose someone who inspires you but you feel like an idiot for having looked up to them in the first place. Phil probably doesn't want Paul's autograph anymore. And, the thing is that it is an impossible situation for Paul. I'm sure Paul didn't mean anything by it but such a moment to a fan is so amplified, whether it is Phil Collins or any of us, that it is easy to overreact. However, that is just as bad because when you lionize people it becomes disappointing when you realize they are mere mortals just like you are.
I imagine it was a bit of a shock for Paul to have Phil ask such a question. Perhaps it was one he wasn't ready for. Maybe Phil didn't stop to think that signing an autograph was the last thing he wanted to do, especially on an album from that long ago from better days when his other " brothers" were alive and they were all getting along. I can only imagine the emotional traumas Paul deals with from the past, the strain of always being in the public eye, people wanting autographs. Maybe, just maybe he wanted to be treated or would like to be treated like a normal human being..no autographs please!
There’s a story here in Scotland, which may or may not be true, that Collins after buying that land in Scotland, just after releasing Another Day In Paradise then having people who lived on the land evicted, walked into the local pub, the only one for miles, and instantly the owner barman said “your barred”, “don’t you know who I am?” responded Collins, “I, get out, your barred.”
Probably true Alex. In the 70s, three members of Genesis (including Collins), bough a small street of houses in rural England. they just left it to rot. They buy it for investment / tax purposes and give no thought to the local environment.

Being a fan... And being a fan that collects things as a hobby... When I hear that someone brings a unique 1St Edition and has the honor to possibly having it signed by one of the books subjects... Tells the strong admiration and love of the fan... But stepping back and hearing the reaction... It's painfully clear to me what happened and why it's actually a very tragic set of circumstances... It was Paul... Whether anyone from outside could ever really understand, the break up of the Beatles for Paul - turned that side of Paul's life - into sharp moments of pain and anger... In hindsight, had anyone advised Phil to NOT introduce the book... Things from that point on... Would be different, for sure... Because Phil was hit by a reaction to things he was never apart of... Paul wasn't able process the matter to begin with, which is the wrench from very start... Things... Control to much... Shapes from the present shaped by the past that in turn shape the future... Locking hurt both in and away... Which is how this chance event sparked like it did...
Yes, and Paul was married to the bitch Heather Mills at the time. He dealt with depression after the Beatles broke up and Linda pulled him out of it. When she died, he again fell into a deep depression. He fell for Heather because he was really vulnerable. Even though Stella warned him (and probably his other kids) that she was bad news, he married her anyway. Some men just cannot be alone. I've seen it happen more often with guys than women. Guys don't have the larger support network women do, for the most part. I hate to generalize but it is something I've seen over my six decades on this Earth. Paul was in a bad mood, obviously. Phil should forgive and try to forget because grudges just hurt the one holding them.
I think Paul was channeling a smarmy John Lennon there, just like I often imitate my best friend. Lennon made fun of the Beatles' fame for many years after their breakup because, to him, fans hung on to Beatlemania when they should have been moving on to world peace and other causes he believed in.
The real Paul McCartney died in 1966 and was replaced by Billy. Billy probably has difficulty signing with his left hand and making it look like Paul McCartney's signature. Maybe he does those type of signatures in his home, etc. with his right hand. Also, Billy knows that he was not in the Beatles when the album Phil wanted him to sign was recorded. Maybe if Phil had asked Billy to sign an album from Sgt. Peppers on or a Wings album or a Paul McCartney (Billy) solo album, the response might have been different.
hasn't everyone said something they should not have at some point? even if mccartney was being mean, it is far worse to nurse this along for years as being such a big deal. life is too short.
Phil you made good music but none of it truly outlived the 80s. Paul's got nuggets that will live for a hundred years if not longer. Phil lighten up!!!!!!
It would appear Paul wanted to address the fact that Phil's success might never have happened if it had not been for the fact the Beatles opened the door for so any musicains and for whatever reason he took the opportunity to let him know it ! "Little Phil"wow !
Phil was certainly not the first whom Paul was a jerk towards. For example, his constant criticism of Ringo during the recording of "Back in the USSR" drove Ringo to quit the Beatles... albeit temporarily. John and George persuaded him to re-join, but it was actually Paul who played drums for the recording of that song.
@@FRN2013hat’s not what Ringo says about the situation but even if it is true it doesn’t really make Paul look bad. I would have thought Collins had a thicker skin. Perhaps if Paul hadn't used the diminutive " little, " it wouldn't have irked him so much. All that being said, get over it, Phil!
That's strange, since a lot of other British Rock Stars are also Beatles fans - and, in the Ozzie Osbourne Documentary, I've seen Ozzie (a HUGE Beatles fan) getting Paul McCartney to sign his Beatles Album. Paul was very gracious. Lemmy from Motorhead was also a massive Beatles fan - I don't think that Paul would be rude to Lemmy, if he knew what was good for him. Phil Collins seems a bit Over-Sensitive.
If I had to guess, Paul was joking and didn't even remember the interaction until he heard about it in the press. I know, I've joked to someone, only to find they got upset over it. I guess Paul assumed that Phil being a big star himself would understand the joke. Playing amature psychiatrist, I would guess, because he was a Beatles fan as a kid, this felt like being crushed by his idol. Not really Paul's fault.
Phil hates Paul mostly because He knows that the musician calling himself Paul McCartney IS AN IMPOSTER The real James Paul McCartney died in a horrific car crash arranged by MI6... Both are great musicians in their own right, from two legendary bands. You can tell from Collins' solo album covers, he has a relatively healthy ego lol. For him to tuck tail and ask for a autograph is a big deal. Unfortunately, Paul apparently took a moment that he decided not to be so humble and gracious, but instead flexed his ego. It's a shame, but that's how these things go sometimes. I still enjoy both of their music. Paul will always be my favorite Beatle!
Or Phil blew it way out of proportion and Paul was joking. For Phil to be so upset over something so minor and to hold a grudge all these years shows who was the real asshole

I recently (finally) watched the “Get Back” documentary. One of the things I was amazed at was Paul’s contributions on certain songs that I thought were strictly Lennon compositions. “Don’t Let Me Down” is an example.
Tomorrow never knows was born out of John’s experiment to write a song using just the one chord (or drone note), which coincidently or not lends itself perfectly to Indian music.

Since Phil is only 5-6, is was a bit of an insult. But, we all sometimes on the spur of the moment, can say something stupid and regret it. Maybe he called him little Phil because he was a child when featured in the Hard Days Night movie as a member of the audience? Phil did you forget that most Beatles fans know about this? Paul was clearly kidding. Still went on to record Paul’s Abbey Road suite on George Martin’s tribute album and play drums for Paul at the Royal Albert Hall too. Get over it. Many people believe that the original Paul McCartney died in late 1966 and was replaced by a very talented musician named Billy. So, not only was Paul killed at age 24, but most people didn't realize it because Billy replaced him in the Beatles and took over Paul's identity. This should be taken into account. The original Paul should be separate in people's mind from the second Paul (Billy). From what I have seen of the original Paul, he was always polite and had a very warm, charming personality. He deserves his own legacy, separate from the impersonator -- regardless of how talented Billy may be.
As a Beatle, McCartney has certainly had his share of people throughout his life pretending to like him to monetize anything they can get for personal gain. From everything I see in these circles, musical peers do not usually make autograph requests amongst themselves, so McCartney might have felt like Collins was embarrassing him by acting like a fan in front of his wife. People say McCartney should have been "impressed" to get such a request from someone like Collins. Well maybe Paul expected better behavior in asking like that too.

Paul was the one who found out how to manipulate the tape machine to make loops by removing the eraser head. He then brought the loops in a bag and suggested the others also make some for the song.
