“He was all about being an artist”. This is why Guy Clark, Jackson Browne and James Taylor are such American treasures. They were story tellers and creative intellectuals with a canvas to paint, they are all so special in this way. And music just hasn’t been the same since.
It's Wednesday morning here in Taiwan (12/18/24). I just watched your videos with Gary about John Prine and Guy Clark back to back and am fascinated. I have been introduced to people like Gary through your work. They are funny, insightful and even emotional at times. Thanks for uncovering this rich history and sharing it with us. Much appreciated, Otis.
Wow ! Love that Austin City Limits episode. Didn't realize that was Gary on the red Tele. Have a great weekend! My family woke to a tornado warning this morning around 6am in San Francisco?!
Thank you for this interview. Guy Clark like many writers trusted their work even if the public and critics might not. The list of now well regarded writers who were not recognized when they wrote is long. Being a musician or writer is not work for the weak of heart or mind. The Lyle Lovett story is appreciated as well. One can wonder how many others who did not receive the helping hand and whose work is yet to be heard enough to be so honored.

I tried to see Guy Clark play every time he played in Nashville from 1979-1983 when I lived there. He was always great whether by himself or with a band. One time he pulled up at the back door of Cantrell’s in his old yellow International Harvester Scout, reached in the back seat and picked up a Telecaster lying on the back seat (not in a case) and walked in to get ready to play his set. He was great that night. Another time, he was playing solo and forgot the words to LA Freeway in the middle of the song. He stopped, looked at the audience and said, “that never happened before”, and started over. That really hit me how down to earth he was and what a gift he had as a songwriter, and that he was human.
Many thanks to you Otis for enriching my favorite artists list forever with musicians only you put in the spotlight. I first heard you many years ago sharing stories of the tragic loss of Justin Townes Earl. Your truth was personal from the inside out. I've listened ever since. You ARE the 'Gateway' to the Greats.🙏
My only guy story was at a Harlen birthday Bash when my buddy Bubba and I were smoking a joint and Guy and Harold Shedd came over next to me, and we all shared a couple of joints. First and only time I really met him.
love how all these tales tend to have something about humility doin stuff for the love and drinking eating and carrying on at three am.....lol🎉 tho it makes me a little sadly jealous how different lives can be ..but jealousy won't help and we've seen some times too ❤
Otis. As he stated how he had to be careful. Very. Careful to stay out of the way of Guy’s lyrics I was at that very point aware of how gracious your are to let your interviewees tell their story unimpended… “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;” James 1:19 NKJV
Check out Gary's new record, Common Sense and tell him Otis sent ya!

This was a great interview Otis thanks to you and Gary !would love to hear more about Gary’s time with Delbert Mcclinton
Delbert McClinton is worth his own review and subject of conversation for his song writing and long career recording music.
