Just block each other and move on. When I meet someone with a bad connection, I block him. When I meet a player who uses the chainsaw glitch, I block him. I don't want to waste my time on it.

AlterF8 is a cheater; at least in DS3. When I created my first PvP build on PC a few years back, I invaded into them on Pontiff. I saw two invaders chasing them, and I thought it was just another player getting ganked, so I two-handed my shield and just followed them. After they felled one or two invaders, I realized they weren't helpless and started to fight using the crescent blade. They would run every time they were low, and would come back full health and with full estus. Eventually they killed me and then proceeded to drop rope-bombs where I died as a sign of disrespect. They had their stream linked in their Steam profile; I checked it out and I saw they were using cheats to see where all the players were, and then would use the estus refill glitch while hiding like a little rat. So, I re-invaded and bowglitched their cheating ass with sacred flame; I then disrespected them with the same roped bombs. It's pretty obvious why AlterF8 would resort to chainsaw glitch in a duel; it's because they're a shitter, and after seeing how they used cheats in Ds3, I wouldn't put them above using a macro and justifying it with the same bullshit they used for walls in Ds3.

Light rolling is regardless of ones feelings about it an intended mechanic of the game. Latency combined with light rolling can be cancer but it is still a part of the game. Chainsaw on the other hand is a glitch that guarantees an instant win, which can be used by any build, passes through walls and has insane range. You have multiple ways to deal with latency as explained, but you cant with a straight face justify the use of chainsaw. Oh I dont like how this dude plays. Lets chainsaw. This will surely end well for the pvp scene in general steel.
steel's intention was never to justify the use of chainsaw. He simply wanted to bring attention to the reason that the guy used chainsaw in the first place. There is indeed a difference.

If he meant to draw attention to the latency problem, he should have chosen another video considering how many people are floating around and teleporting from the moon in the arena. Latency is not a case of low-key justifying chainsaw, as Steel did. And when someone from the "casual" side of the game sees that the pvp content creators have these kind of takes that are low-key justifying the use of such a glitch, they will never want to partake in the pvp aspect of the game ever. Steel gives such bad arguments in regards to this one specific glitch, objectively the worst one in the game, that it baffles me. Chainsaw, in most occasions, is an instant-win button. Its not because it just deals damage, its simply an instant win condition, and i dont think its existence justifies any other exploit. People hate chainsaw because in most cases there is nothing you can do, comparing its potency to light-rolling is in my opinion, inconceivable - both are on levels that aren't even comparable. The way you paint your point makes it sound like "Chainsaw glitch okay" because "other bad thing exists".
Whataboutism is a flawed argument, agreed. But Steel very clearly said he doesn't think the chainsaw was okay either. He wasn't doing the "it's justified because look at these other glitches", he was comparing the chainsaw to other glitches that (in his opinion) can have a similar effect on the outcome of a match to it, but are received positively by the community rather than negatively. It's not a justification, it's just a comparison.
Not lightroll but playing with very broken WiFi net which was unplayable for Alter. From his perspective he didnt even see the malenia guy , just saw him teleporting around. People like that should be excluded from online matches through ping filter. Hopefuly we will get it in the DLC.

@CrowFeatherQuill I mean, I like the idea of light armor for casters to help them be more evasive considering mages wearing big armor is silly and not really accurate how they're depicted in soul games. But that's just my opinion. I do understand they take like 15% more damage, so rolls have to be good in that off set.

This is what happens when we get no expansion release day for 2 years and the patches slow down to once every 6 months. Honestly this is a nothing burger but a few crumbs of excitement is nice for all of us. I need to find something to bitch about as well. I am not super invested in this issue, and I'm not going to side with steelchomsky or onlywaifu. I don't know either of them but i enjoy videos from both. I will say this though. You should never be light rolling in 1v1. In invasions it is a nice tool to avoid the sheer volume of pew pew hitbox spam from gankers. But in 1v1 there is no justification for that, and with latency it is effectively cheating. On the other hand, outright responding with intentional cheats is not the proper response. You can't really blame either side of this, they're both correct in a way. Who you can blame is FROM for still having this shit in their game 2 years after release.

The main argument in favor of chainsawing is just taking people at their word. From what I see there's no proof whatsoever that it was unplayable for alter, just him saying so. And obviously he's not just gonna say something that condemns him as a cheater, not that it matters much since the secondary justification is "Hes light rolling" which is just a gameplay mechanic that can very easily be circumvented, status effects still build up regardless of whether it deals initial damage or not. Even if we give him the absolute benefit of the doubt, and say that on his end hes seeing a guy lag around and light roll; His instant reaction is flat out cheating, no matter how you paint it its cheating over literally anything else. The 'just block him' argument can only go so far. chainsawing someone over something that could even be out of their control is a cop out excuse, especially given its a glitch that essentially just instantly kills you. Glitching is only deemed ok when its not harmful to any player, obviously there's independent bias but comparing bloodhound step, just base game from what it sounded like, to chainsawing is just badfaith, just because the instant kill is hard to do doesnt make the instant kill any better. i've never been good at perfect blocking, but back in the day i saw that like a good tecnique to learn, especially because backstabs were kinda in a bad spot, but since backstabs got buffed, i been feeling that is a not so healty glitch.
In this case one Player was playing on decent net (Alter) and the other was playing on steam dec or whatever with weak WiFi. Malenia guy had indeed shitnet.

Edit: This discussion is kinda pointless since the main problem is how shit Cock Ring is, espeically on PC. By arguing about glitches we don't do anything to improve the situation of the game. We just divide the community even further by yelling at each other. Which does not accomplish anything : | So... about the steam deck connection. This will be anegdotal, but it is 100% possible to verify it if you have a deck and a friend with pc version of the game on the other side. I was helping my friend set up a build for his invasions, we decided that it was going to pe poke-poke setup with miracles or pyromancies in off hand. So I got him a banished knight's halbeard and we started testing various setups. He was adamant about his character light rolling, which I thought was an absolutely needless overkill. Regardless we also min-maxed a set of armour for light roll. Now context: this guy has NEVER INVADED IN ELDEN RING. NEVER. And I was COMPLETELY unable to punish his running pokes. I have like 450-500 hours of invading experience at this point and NOTHING worked. The latency was so bad and unstable that my mate would just phase out of dual nagis and dual pike attacks. Steam deck + Wi-Fi = absolutely dogshit connection. AND WE LIVE LITERALLY IN THE SAME CITY. I can reach him in like 10 minutes if I drive my car. The only thing that worked was running heavy attacks from HTS. Simply because I would predict his latency and land the hit like... 500ms earlier than he would land his. The experience was completely abysmal and from what I know his build, with the shit lat he has, is an utter menace to fight in an invasion. As for the glitch/cheat argument... it basically comes down to definitions. Normal definition of the word "cheat" would 100% include glitches. We are however thinking about "cheating" in context of games, especially video games. In that context glitches do not have to be considered cheats at all. Furthermore Waifu stating that glicthes are bad and so on and then using a bow glicth to counter the chainsaw glitch is like... peak of hypocrisy? Glicthing or cheating does not makes the game better, unless it is done in a way that is funny for both the exploiter and the victim.
Looking at this as outsider. As someone who doesn't play Elden Ring anymore. One of the main reasons i stopped playing the game, is the same reason i did the same with DS3, is the amount of toxicity in pvp. To me it's not so much about chainsaw this or bhs or moonveil that or whatever but rather the degenerate behavior that for whatever reason so many people have in these games. I have blocked more people from Dark Souls and Elden Ring than any other multiplayer game. The souls community is just pure braindead toxic garbage in general. And i hate to say it because i truly do love the souls games.

Many players myself included when encountering high latency stop viewing the match competitively and start throwing to avoid a headache. Personally I don't glitch but it basically accomplishes the same thing of forfeiting the match
You do realize high latency doesn’t have anything to do besides where the opponent lives in comparison to you, right? The player has no control over that, so to throw a fit and give up, or even worse, use an exploit, because the connection is bad is very strange behavior

Not much. Chainsaw isn't common even with the macro circulating around. Fog wall hosts get off with impunity, the fog-wall abusing hosts don't get chainsawed anymore... and nothing really happens because the stakes of losing a fight in ER are basically nonexistent.
I fight a lot of skipping dudes in my time in ds3 but more times in ER. I didn't resorted to glitching them i just fight them by just trading or pray that my hits was registered properly... And do my best on the fight. You don't need to chainsaw glitch

honestly i got chainsawed once just was unassuming using taunters tongue and had white cirqlet on for some more interaction (turned it off after 1 blue spawned) and i guess guy thought i was ganking (solo invader i backed off as soon as my blue engaged) (no other red spawned) so he ran off and i went to kill pve and then i heard a strange noise that i know can identify as chainsaw glitch well i got blasted through the wall xD figured the guy must have had a bad day and just kept playing ah yes when i invaded in ds3 i am guilty of using estus refill against ganks cuz 6 estus is kinda rough if you ask me

Well.. this is a good way to diminish faster Elden Ring's pvp player base, by taking exploiting and cheating as a part of the game...so playing it is not fun anymore. Also, on the topic of latency, i dislike that i see a lot of bashing on latent players in ER from some. It almost sounds like they are doing that on purpose. Personally i am connected to wi-fi and by the nature of arrangement with my landlord i can have only wi-fi connection ( router is simply too far and you would have to drill holes through floors and ceilings to do it ), it is pretty fast but it is wi-fi. It is not my fault i have that kind of arrangement and i do my best to try to minimize latency when i play. Demonizing and comparing to cheaters people not having the absolute best setups with most stellar internet connection, you just get the effect of telling those people "no, you cant play this game."... that sounds a bit dumb imho. Also both of those problems, game connecting players below certain threshold of acceptability and game not compensating in some way for latency, and general cheating and glitches, are problems that should be put on the FromSoftware's doorstep. It is pointless to go back and forth about this between you tubers and people in comments sections...

From Alter's perspective this guy had to be unplayable. I know the pain , there is nothing more annoying in this game then people with shitnet. Latency on its own is managable , but if you add broken 5 mb upload on mc donalds wifi , the malenia guy was skipping and hitting from 2 miles away. People like that should not have access to playing with "normal" players. Please give us ping filter in the DLC 🎉
Light roll is way more of a problem tbh, very rarely will you come across someone using chainsaw and usually its because they're trying to cheese the other person back (not saying you should chainsaw I honestly wouldn't I prefer the learn how to counter it with just normal gameplay), light roll is way more common overall too. I'm from Australia and light roll is a massive problem for me tbh sometimes its just too much with the high lat and yeah it makes sense Australia basically has no player base in Elden ring and I legitimately get good ping once every two weeks - 1 month which is just sad because I enjoy trying to roll catch as my playstyle (serpent hunter/gugs etc) but I'm basically forced to trade with everyone and in invasions I get punished way too hard for "playing the right way" and trying to space everything correctly etc. I enjoy invasions the most and when I vs two light rollers with bad latency regardless if the player is good or bad at the game light roll changes the game entirely with lag and for me can pretty much be unpunishable even with vyke spears with status effect for example the latency is too high. Tbh I'd prefer to vs someone that's trying to chainsaw you can punish someone way easier for using chainsaw just get out of range from them and shoot golem arrows to knock them over so they have to do it again if they want to cheese you or hit them before they can even start it up. Overall the ER experience for me is still really fun its one of those games you can put a lot of time in and you're rewarded for doing so because "practice makes perfect", you can always learn and try to get better and its a great feeling when you understand the game that well you can 1v3 people and still win. Steel has very valid points I genuinely don't think he is trying to "justify" using the chainsaw glitch more so just to explain to people light roll overall is more problem to the game and he even said he wouldn't do it himself people just get frustrated with it because we all know how much more enjoyable the ER experience would be if you wouldn't find someone else from across the globe ahaha. Light roll may be a mechanic in the game but its still more problematic overall to the general gameplay with latency and can ruin the fun for me personally and I'm sure other people think the same way.
What's the big problem with light rolling, you have to give up poise, players like that will hardly be able to trade differently than you with high poise, it's a different way of playing, stop complaining and learn to adapt like these players who don't trade strikes the problem is that you're used to winning this way, when you can't, you try to find an excuse.

Having played the shit out of dks pvp but never getting into ER, the playerbase been having me regret not getting into it. Most bizarre part about this is how unlikely the 'latency' on the video was distance-related. I worked for an actual internet provider (paul bunyun) and had to go to peoples homes ALL THE TIME. So called "experienced players" were the worst cos they'd always be like "I'm paying for "insert huge amount of bandwidth here" and still lagging... Sure enough, when asked where the server they're trying to connect to is you'll get some absurd distance. Guys, it ain't magic. Distance is the number one culprit 95% of the time when you get lag like that.

When I created my first PvP build on PC a few years back, I invaded into them on Pontiff. I saw two invaders chasing them, and I thought it was just another player getting ganked, so I two-handed my shield and just followed them. After they felled one or two invaders, I realized they weren't helpless and started to fight using the crescent blade. They would run every time they were low, and would come back full health and with full estus. Eventually they killed me and then proceeded to drop rope-bombs where I died as a sign of disrespect. They had their stream linked in their Steam profile; I checked it out and I saw they were using cheats to see where all the players were, and then would use the estus refill glitch while hiding like a little rat. So, I re-invaded and bowglitched their cheating ass with sacred flame; I then disrespected them with the same roped bombs.
It's pretty obvious why AlterF8 would resort to chainsaw glitch in a duel; it's because they're a shitter, and after seeing how they used cheats in Ds3, I wouldn't put them above using a macro and justifying it with the same bullshit they used for walls in Ds3.

Chainsaw, in most occasions, is an instant-win button. Its not because it just deals damage, its simply an instant win condition, and i dont think its existence justifies any other exploit. People hate chainsaw because in most cases there is nothing you can do, comparing its potency to light-rolling is in my opinion, inconceivable - both are on levels that aren't even comparable. The way you paint your point makes it sound like "Chainsaw glitch okay" because "other bad thing exists".
Whataboutism is a flawed argument, agreed. But Steel very clearly said he doesn't think the chainsaw was okay either. He wasn't doing the "it's justified because look at these other glitches", he was comparing the chainsaw to other glitches that (in his opinion) can have a similar effect on the outcome of a match to it, but are received positively by the community rather than negatively. I am not super invested in this issue, and I'm not going to side with steelchomsky or onlywaifu. I don't know either of them but i enjoy videos from both.
I will say this though. You should never be light rolling in 1v1. In invasions it is a nice tool to avoid the sheer volume of pew pew hitbox spam from gankers. But in 1v1 there is no justification for that, and with latency it is effectively cheating.
On the other hand, outright responding with intentional cheats is not the proper response.
You can't really blame either side of this, they're both correct in a way.
Who you can blame is FROM for still having this shit in their game 2 years after release.

The main argument in favor of chainsawing is just taking people at their word. From what I see there's no proof whatsoever that it was unplayable for alter, just him saying so. And obviously he's not just gonna say something that condemns him as a cheater, not that it matters much since the secondary justification is "Hes light rolling" which is just a gameplay mechanic that can very easily be circumvented, status effects still build up regardless of whether it deals initial damage or not. Even if we give him the absolute benefit of the doubt, and say that on his end hes seeing a guy lag around and light roll; His instant reaction is flat out cheating, no matter how you paint it its cheating over literally anything else. The 'just block him' argument can only go so far. chainsawing someone over something that could even be out of their control is a cop out excuse, especially given its a glitch that essentially just instantly kills you. So... about the steam deck connection. This will be anegdotal, but it is 100% possible to verify it if you have a deck and a friend with pc version of the game on the other side.
I was helping my friend set up a build for his invasions, we decided that it was going to pe poke-poke setup with miracles or pyromancies in off hand. So I got him a banished knight's halbeard and we started testing various setups. He was adamant about his character light rolling, which I thought was an absolutely needless overkill. Regardless we also min-maxed a set of armour for light roll.
Now context: this guy has NEVER INVADED IN ELDEN RING. NEVER. And I was COMPLETELY unable to punish his running pokes. I have like 450-500 hours of invading experience at this point and NOTHING worked. The latency was so bad and unstable that my mate would just phase out of dual nagis and dual pike attacks. Steam deck + Wi-Fi = absolutely dogshit connection. AND WE LIVE LITERALLY IN THE SAME CITY. I can reach him in like 10 minutes if I drive my car. The only thing that worked was running heavy attacks from HTS. Simply because I would predict his latency and land the hit like... 500ms earlier than he would land his. The experience was completely abysmal and from what I know his build, with the shit lat he has, is an utter menace to fight in an invasion.
As for the glitch/cheat argument... it basically comes down to definitions. Normal definition of the word "cheat" would 100% include glitches. We are however thinking about "cheating" in context of games, especially video games. In that context glitches do not have to be considered cheats at all. Furthermore Waifu stating that glicthes are bad and so on and then using a bow glicth to counter the chainsaw glitch is like... peak of hypocrisy? Glicthing or cheating does not makes the game better, unless it is done in a way that is funny for both the exploiter and the victim.

One of the main reasons i stopped playing the game, is the same reason i did the same with DS3, is the amount of toxicity in pvp. I fight a lot of skipping dudes in my time in ds3 but more times in ER. I didn't resorted to glitching them i just fight them by just trading or pray that my hits was registered properly... And do my best on the fight. You don't need to chainsaw glitch
This video is just saying "Yes they are both bad" while telling people what not to play elden ring on. While also justifying cheating as "People get upset". Damn I guess if I get upset at a tournament I should be allowed to just cheat to my hearts content. just was unassuming using taunters tongue and had white cirqlet on for some more interaction (turned it off after 1 blue spawned) and i guess guy thought i was ganking (solo invader i backed off as soon as my blue engaged) (no other red spawned) so he ran off and i went to kill pve and then i heard a strange noise that i know can identify as chainsaw glitch

Well.. this is a good way to diminish faster Elden Ring's pvp player base, by taking exploiting and cheating as a part of the game...so playing it is not fun anymore.
Also, on the topic of latency, i dislike that i see a lot of bashing on latent players in ER from some. It almost sounds like they are doing that on purpose.
Personally i am connected to wi-fi and by the nature of arrangement with my landlord i can have only wi-fi connection ( router is simply too far and you would have to drill holes through floors and ceilings to do it ), it is pretty fast but it is wi-fi.
It is not my fault i have that kind of arrangement and i do my best to try to minimize latency when i play. Demonizing and comparing to cheaters people not having the absolute best setups with most stellar internet connection, you just get the effect of telling those people "no, you cant play this game."... that sounds a bit dumb imho.
Also both of those problems, game connecting players below certain threshold of acceptability and game not compensating in some way for latency, and general cheating and glitches, are problems that should be put on the FromSoftware's doorstep. It is pointless to go back and forth about this between you tubers and people in comments sections...

Light roll is way more of a problem tbh, very rarely will you come across someone using chainsaw and usually its because they're trying to cheese the other person back (not saying you should chainsaw I honestly wouldn't I prefer the learn how to counter it with just normal gameplay), light roll is way more common overall too. I'm from Australia and light roll is a massive problem for me tbh sometimes its just too much with the high lat and yeah it makes sense Australia basically has no player base in Elden ring and I legitimately get good ping once every two weeks - 1 month which is just sad because I enjoy trying to roll catch as my playstyle (serpent hunter/gugs etc) but I'm basically forced to trade with everyone and in invasions I get punished way too hard for "playing the right way" and trying to space everything correctly etc. I enjoy invasions the most and when I vs two light rollers with bad latency regardless if the player is good or bad at the game light roll changes the game entirely with lag and for me can pretty much be unpunishable even with vyke spears with status effect for example the latency is too high. Tbh I'd prefer to vs someone that's trying to chainsaw you can punish someone way easier for using chainsaw just get out of range from them and shoot golem arrows to knock them over so they have to do it again if they want to cheese you or hit them before they can even start it up. Overall the ER experience for me is still really fun its one of those games you can put a lot of time in and you're rewarded for doing so because "practice makes perfect", you can always learn and try to get better and its a great feeling when you understand the game that well you can 1v3 people and still win. Steel has very valid points I genuinely don't think he is trying to "justify" using the chainsaw glitch more so just to explain to people light roll overall is more problem to the game and he even said he wouldn't do it himself people just get frustrated with it because we all know how much more enjoyable the ER experience would be if you wouldn't find someone else from across the globe ahaha. Light roll may be a mechanic in the game but its still more problematic overall to the general gameplay with latency and can ruin the fun for me personally and I'm sure other people think the same way.
What's the big problem with light rolling, you have to give up poise, players like that will hardly be able to trade differently than you with high poise, it's a different way of playing, stop complaining and learn to adapt like these players who don't trade strikes the problem is that you're used to winning this way, when you can't, you try to find an excuse.

Most bizarre part about this is how unlikely the 'latency' on the video was distance-related. Experienced players would easily see the instability on the connection, meaning the redditor here is playing on a bad wifi connection, which causes unstable packet loss and latency...
There is no distance-related latency, it is not two-sided, it is unplayable because of the massive packet loss, and there's no fair play (because redditor purposely chose to PvP on bad wifi). Why is the shunter forced to play fair when the light rolling malenia isn't?

I worked for an actual internet provider (paul bunyun) and had to go to peoples homes ALL THE TIME. So called "experienced players" were the worst cos they'd always be like "I'm paying for "insert huge amount of bandwidth here" and still lagging... Sure enough, when asked where the server they're trying to connect to is you'll get some absurd distance.

Dragging a fight out by abusing bad internet and light rolls is far more annoying than the occasional one shot chainsaw. They both need to be patched. Also ‘OP’ was oblivious about how obnoxious he himself was being. Chainsaw might be ‘basement dweller behaviour’ but light roll is pretty maidenless too.
