and to complete the mnemonic, you need the NPC's current (R)eality. do they live free, oppressed, rich, poor and such - how they fit in the world matters to how they interact with other things in the world, perhaps as well as their understanding of the world.

      Name: Herbert Eastman
Occupation: Professor of Anthropology at Miskatonic University
Description: Herbert Eastman is a tall, thin man in his late forties. He has a sharp nose, sunken eyes, and a receding hairline. He often wears tweed jackets and wire-rimmed glasses. His voice is low and raspy, and he speaks with a slight English accent.
Goals: Herbert is a dedicated scholar and is always searching for new knowledge. He is particularly interested in the occult and the esoteric, and has spent years researching the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Motivations: Herbert is driven by his desire to unlock the secrets of the past and understand the mysteries of the universe. He is convinced that there is much to be learned from the writings and artifacts of the ancients, and he is willing to go to great lengths to uncover their secrets.
Attitude: Herbert is a reserved and introspective individual, who can sometimes come across as aloof or unapproachable. He is not particularly social and prefers to spend his time in the company of his books and research. He is not easily rattled, even in the face of the most terrifying and supernatural phenomena.
Secrets: Herbert is secretly involved in a cult that worships an ancient deity known as the "Black Pharaoh". He has been searching for a lost tome called the "Necronomicon", which he believes will grant him great power and knowledge. He is also responsible for the disappearance of several students who stumbled upon his secret activities, and will do whatever it takes to protect his interests.

This is neat stuff! It occurs to me that OGAS can be used for any kind of character, not just NPCs. Like, it could be used by players to make their characters act realistically in game, or for characters being written in a book, to make situations feel more plausible. Thanks for the character interaction guide!

    • @dcbandit
      @dcbandit 2 роки тому +2

@SD It could be used as a method for dealing with a situation involving other characters. For instance, if a rude rogue with a chip on his shoulder looking for a bit of fun with low stakes, might help a bandit rob a noble of all his wealth for a cut of the loot, but would scamper as soon as guards showed up, leaving the bandit to fend for himself.

Love this system and intend on applying it to NPC's in my next game, however I do think there is room for an interesting 5th concept: Secret (or knowledge for a better acronym). Giving an npc a secret that they are aware of, some knoledge on the town, some dark past, something that takes a bit of peeling back to reveal can add an extra layer of depth to a character.

The process of artificial characters within one's mind having srlf generating interactions is at the heart of much fiction writing, and touches upon both certain forms of psychosis (where a mind loses track of the boundary between internal and external origin of expression and inputs) and the practice of creating complete and effectively separate internal personae that are called 'Tulpa' (with some but not total accuracy from the Tibetan term for such; which somehow have become a limited but trending practice in modern times).

Great video! After watching it, reading the comments, and thinking it over, I have to say I agree that "Secret" seems to be the missing thing that would complete this system.
Using the tavern keeper as an example: the act of watering down the beer is their Secret that they do to meet their Goal of making the most money they can.
Using the soldier as an example, the Secret could be that he blackmails tavern keepers into providing him food and drink if they want their business protected, even going so far as to manipulating the patrol assignments so the tavern in question is not included, an act that would get him fired or even prosecuted as a criminal.
Thus, adding the Secret to this system gives the Stake more meaning, increases/enhances the Stake.
So I think I'm going to glean all of the awesome things you created here and just add Secret to it for OGASS (Occupation, Goal, Attitude, Secret, Stake) because that seems to be naturally separate from the Goal itself.

I would expand slightly upon your OGAS formula, which I dig greatly. Simply, I would make it KOGASI, adding Knowledge (what the NPC knows about the quest or other NPCs), and Items, stuff they're carrying. This way, once you weave you NPCs together with clues and items, as well as HOW to deal with each one, much of the game can be run by this pre-programming.

  • @410_Gone
    @410_Gone Рік тому

Hello Guy, I had a revelation recently about OGAS and I wanted to share it with you:
You can use the system to describe every type of lore for your worldbuilding.
It's great for characters, but it can be for a group of people (like a thieves guild), a kingdom, an event like a war, an enchanted item or even a place of magical power.
The great thing is, the different letters in OGAS can lend different personalities to these lore pieces that makes them a lot more grounded (not feeling simply made up to fill a hole) and human.
A thieves guild could have the goal to secretly control the king.
A war could have the stake of preserving a holy shrine, while from the opposing side the attitude of being ruthles pillagers.
A magical effect could have the goal to give a temporary boon while having the attitude of being playful, moving items about and playing sween luring music, reminiscent of the feywild.
It's great because once you're familiar with creating characters with the OGAS system, you can pretty much make up any lore that ties in nicely with the world and is memorable.
Would you consider giving it a thought if this could be used as the primary tool for worldbuilding, possibly mentioning it in a video so more people can thing about OGAS in broader terms?

This is going to be really helpful; thank you! I'm already thinking about the central NPCs in one game I'm planning and how this gives me a better framework for looking at how they change over time. They start out being mostly unhelpful and sometimes even a hindrance because they're being manipulated by the villain but the PCs have the opportunity to help them if the PCs are perceptive about what the NPCs need/want and that would change the NPCs' OGAS. Looking at the OGAS changes gives me a better idea of their changed behavior than I had before. Now I'm all excited about planning this out!

I like your system, however I added a fifth letter: Disposition. How does the NPC feel about the players? If they're a werewolf who sees all non-lycans as prey, they might attack, and if they're proven wrong, they'll likely retreat much faster so they don't get hurt to the point where they can't hunt. A guard who is in league with the local thieves' guild in secret may have a positive disposition if the players show affiliation with them and may fudge documents about them if they shine a light on the players that is less favorable.

The problem I run into with npc to npc dialogue is I get self conscious that my players aren't invested while I'm doing it (we play online and when I'm in character I'm not looking at their reactions; I can't really look at people while talking to them anyway) so I end up cutting it short and going into a narrator voice quickly summarizing their dialogue.
But PC to NPC oh baby they couldn't be more independent from me if I tried.
I'm pretty sure one of my NPCs is actually a future version of myself time traveled back in time to tell me the plot to my own campaign at this point. Cuz I cannot write this stuff.
If you make the goals interesting enough when they are off screen they will pop into your head (in their voice) with their own brilliant ideas of what they have been up to to accomplish said goals.
But tldr: all of OGAS is exactly how to run a NPC.

I really like the general concept, though there are a couple things I might think about a little differently.
You don't need to fill out the whole list, necessarily. I think job and goal can potentially be interchanged for one another. For example, someone who wants to rob a bank is going to probably have any skills and tools they need to do so, no specific job needed, unless they're bad at it which becomes an entirely different approach to the character. Similarly, unless otherwise stated a guard is probably going to be motivated to keep the peace, enforce the law, protect the city, or otherwise enforce city norms. so they don't necessarily need a more developed goal than what's basically just doing their job, unless one wants to develop them out further.
The other thing this made me think of was Fallen London, and its spinoffs. In those games, almost all NPCs fit a naming pattern that goes [adjective] [job/role]. You have things like 'the scruffy urchin', 'the doubtless campaigner' or 'the implacable detective'. Less sophisticated or comprehensive than OGAS, but it might be a good thing to have in the toolbelt if the players would or want to run into an NPC where none has been accounted for. Just pick a sort of person (potentially already decided) then add a description which notes a quirk or significant detail, and then set them loose.

I have a question. What of the O for characters that do not have an easily defined occupation to speak of? We can easily go for things like "city guard" or "merchant" or "bounty hunter" or "farmer" but what of characters that lack such occupations?
To bring a more concrete example, I am running a Vampire the Masquerade campaign and of course have a large group of vampires running around to form the city's main hierarchy. Many of these guys have actual human identities to blend into humanity, but some of the older ones don't, as they don't need such trappings and focus more on managing their nightly empire.
Now my first thought was basing it off of the way they work in vampire society, such as "leader" or "enforcer" or "spymaster" but out of these three, only the third one can be easily defined, the other two sound a bit vague to me. Is that not a problem? I get how "Occupation" is only supposed to be a collection of traits related to the character's role in society, but I feel like I might confuse myself later if the keyword for their role is so simple and vague even.

Leader: Looking for opportunities to grow their clan, looking for threats (not a single figure but large scale threats to the whole clan), ensuring they remain the leader etc.
Enforcer: Looking for small threats, following orders, being a good soldier.
The point of OGAS is not to give you a complete list of all the things an NPC can do. That's madness. OGAS for helping you create an encounter with an NPC that has 'a lot going on' but doesn't really have 'a lot planned'. Once the PCs start going back to the same NPC time and time again, then you can worry about developing their bigger OGAS values, and looking for more things for them to add to their plate. Keep it simple unless the PCs want more. Then grow it over time.

I'm running Pathfinder in a LotR setting. I am leading the characters to the east of Mordor so that I have more creative freedom about what the PCs encounter.
I imagine a long traveling session in a caravan with groups of other traders heading east.
Do you have any advice on making a fun and interesting session for PCs while traveling?

    • @LeilanAlseides
      @LeilanAlseides 3 роки тому +3

Not Guy here (obviously), but I may have some advice.
Is there a big major plot going on? Find something in your story that may effect the area they travel. Clues to find and story bits to seed for later. Just something they might remember later and think back and go: Aaah, that's why that was there.
Put in some small social or environmental encounters like watching wild animals, meeting other travelers, or, if you're completely in the wild, bad weather, animal attacks or stff like that. If you want to focus on the travel itself for a session or two, I would recommend the following: 2-3 short roleplay encounters (finding some wild flowers that can be useful for an alchemist; meeting a caravan on the street, you know the drill), 1 or two combat encounters, 1-2 story bits entwined with the other stuff (foreshadowing), 1 environmental encounter (bad storm with some rolls made to find shelter, survive a mud landslide, stuff like that). Try to find at least one thing, each player character can do or would be interested in, so non-survivalist characters have something to do. That would be my advice.

It is always good to foreshadow things. Having stuff on the road that intertwine to the story that made the land the way it is or being the result of the influnce of the main plot.
I start by asking myself question and then fleshing them out
Mordor for example is a bare desert covered with cinder mounds and ash, so how did affect life just beyond the borders? What did it do to the plant life and the people who inhabited this region? Have the orcs already advanced that far and are making life difficult for the commoners? How far does the influence spread and how does the environment change during the journey?
You can address many things from such a point of view. A druid desperately trying to save an extinct plant species or a druid giving an excursion for prospective students in the company of several guards that are being attack while studying. Traders whose goods have been spoiled because of the ash that keeps spreading east.
Always set a premiss from which you ask question so you can build a living, breathing world
I don't know if that helps at all, but I hope it does
      Have a wonderful week!

Do they like or dislike something? Their work? Their community? What else can you come up with?
Do they respect or loathe another person, group or other? Do they actively or passively support their neighbors or are they malicious?
In terms of video games, what are the mechanics of their behavior? The numerical thresholds that determine their actions? Do they flee when witnessing violence or advance towards the aggressor?
As an example, If A, then X; If sees violence, then flee, but if family is the target of violence, then advance with deadly intent, etc.

@@davejacob5208 I apologize for not addressing your question. I'll try again.
Attitude is about 'personality', giving you a quick idea on what to do when portraying, meaning describing or acting, the NPC's behavior.
This means adjectives describing human behavior and emotions should take priority.
You could use other descriptions, but then you'll most likely have trouble with getting the idea on how you should portray them.
First adjective describes over-all, baseline behavior of the NPC.
Second adjective describes the NPC's attitude on its livelihood.
Third adjective describes the NPC's attitude regarding said NPC's goals and their objectives.
After these, any extra adjectives require listing the target of said behavior, i.e. boasts about the biggest fish they catched years ago.

Even the Occupation is flexible depending on what your PCs want. You approach a guard about their child, you're not approaching a guard anymore, you're approaching a parent.
This is true even if 2 NPCs were interacting with each other.
Bob is a guard, he's approached by Steve another guard. It's the OGAS of two guards.
Bob is still the same guard, but now he's approached by Sue, his wife. Now it's not the OGAS of two guards but of a couple or of two parents.
