My best friend @ 16 & I....that was in early '60s..... crossed paths with Hells Angels in Oakland.
Some rude guys came towards us as we were walking across the street to 'Monkey Wards'.
Outta no where was Sonny & a few others who, quite civilly, chased off the guys then just milled around quietly as we went into the store.
When we came back out carrying our treasures they were still hanging about peacefully. When we got into our car & drove off, they all got on their bikes & left.
Sure wish I could find my best friend now. I finally lost contact after severe traumas in the '90s. When I was put out @ nite sometimes by my stepmother, she would let me sleep @ her house every time I showed up @ her door in the dark.

Yes I had a run in with them years ago ,I was just driving along and they went through a red light and ran me off the road .

This is controversial but if you live in Oakland or sf you’re going to run into these people. They’ve always been very respectful and nice. I can’t speak for what they do because idk but I’ve never personally had a problem with them.

I am proud to say I met and shook hands with Sonny at a book signing in the early 2000s. Rest in peace Sonny, gone but will never be forgotten.

I first met Sonny in Hollister the weekend they brought the rally back. It was in Corbin's parking lot where he showed me the pics of his wife's horses he kept in the saddlebags of his Road King. Then we partied at Sturgis in '03 where I introduced him at the press dinner at the Spearfish Holiday Inn as "a symbol of freedom and one of the reasons we are all here." He got a standing ovation. He later said I was the only member of the media who ever treated him with respect. We ran into each other at Myrtle Beach, Daytona and several other rallies; he was always glad to see me and we always had a great talk. Rest easy, Sonny. Like you said, the best road is the one you're riding.
This guy was a true legend and a real man in a world of soft soy boy cowards. Ride on Sonny. Hope you are hanging out with Tramp, Magoo and Skip somewhere right now!

I think about Sonny Barger during holidays. My family mostly passed away but Sonny gave a legacy. Toys for tots. I’ve been looking up places to help, it so difficult groceries and impossible. I am not rich I’m below standard middle income. But we are fortunate we are able to scrape by. I’m very thankful because Sonny did put something in my heart growing up and to help each other as much as we can and Christmas is for kids and family and a nice dinner. Sonny Barger and the Hells angel helped me growing up from a toddler to teenage years
We donate and help each year. Thank you Sonny. Norma was very proud of that cookie jar in Oakland

Sonny Barger had a beautiful heart
My mom dated him back in the day. I wish I could have met him. So sorry he is gone. My heart goes out to him and I wish I knew more of the club but I don't. Love him always will. All hells angels must respect him....

I was born and raised in Oakland. The only time I saw Sonny in public was when he was waiting in line at an order window at a hamburger joint. He had a large "Sonny" tattoo on the side of one of his huge biceps. It was in the early 1970's some 50 yrs. ago. No disrespect, but I remember thinking he could probably go to the head of the line and nobody would say anything; but there he was standing in line waiting his turn like everybody else.

They ain't the heroes that all you week minded people make them out to be. Oh, and let's not forget the time when a couple of junkies robbed my buisness for all of my products and traded it all to them for meth. At least these red and white bikers were nice enough to sell my products back to me. Yeah, real swell guy's. Hopefully a Marvin Heymeyer clone demolishes their club house and shiny bikes.

I remember the bottom rocker said Oakland. Not California
I was a member of a rival club for many years. I never had a problem with any HA personally, just professionally and that was handled on a one to one basis with me. I was never one of those "mob mentality guys". I met Sonny a number of times and he was always a stand up and straight forward dude with me. I remember apologizing to him for the actions of some of my members at one of his birthday parties, I think he was turning 69, and he sat with me for an hour talking. Anyway, they got ruffed up a bit there, and when me and my fellow SA's got hold of them we ruffed them up even more. Sometimes lessons are learned the hard way, but you gotta learn to be respectful when you are in another clubs house.
