- Russia now has a military base at the top of the world - on the remote archipelago of Franz Josef Land.
As global warming increases access to the Arctic region and its rich resources, Russia is expanding its military presence there - making some in the West nervous.

If they let BBC reporter see the base, then its definitely not one of their important bases lol
The best place to hide something is in Plain Sight
The base has parts that they were not shown.
They let the BBC in to show the world that they arn't fkin around. Crazy since its now the first ever military base to be built there. Show of force and determination. Doesn't matter if its important (Which it is... a base at the the top of the world with a functioning airstrip fit for any aircraft they said) as no one else has one up there. Not saying it'll start ww3 but already has west worrying.

Russia owns 53% of the Arctic coastline and 50% of the inhabitants of the Arctic are Russian. There is a perception in the West that Russia is increasing its footprint in the region. More accurately stated, it is modernisation and expansion of existing Soviet-era military facilities (note: on it's own territory). Much of the facilities in question host precious few troops and the infrastucture upgrades largely provides radar, search and rescue, meteorological and coast guard functions for the Northern Sea Route.
Fear mongering sells though. You wouldn't get a special report about the US revamping a military base in Alaska or Greenland.
The Russians, Canadians,Americans , Danes and Brits are after the massive petroleum field north of Baffin Island
And a year later the fear mongering has escalated to this situation. I wonder how America would feel if Russia decided to push up to their border from South America, I'm sure it would still be Russia as the aggressors, like they are now even though it is NATO knocking on Russia's door.

Too much deceptive language from the BBC nowadays, it’s not good enough.
Ever heard about continental shelf? if not then please do a little research, Denmark claimed area extending up to Russian EEZ, many other countries also submitted their claims to UN, hence staking claim isn't wrong not for those islands but for surrounding area i.e. arctic sea.

@@SaddamHussain-we9ec what are the rules about coastal sovereignty? It’s 200 miles off any unimpeded coastline as I understand it, or by equal division in the case of nearby foreign coastlines, archipelagos or islands etc. Svalbard may approach more closely to FranzJosev land than 400 miles, but otherwise Russia owns the Northern coastline and adjacent seabed of Eurasia from Finland to Noveya Zemlyn, the East Siberia Islands, Wrangle Island to Uilin on the Bering Strait. All these Islands have stipulated coastal waters by international treaty intended no doubt to prevent warfare. There would be no question of staking claims in NATO coastal waters. In Antarctica, the continent was sliced up like a cake centred on the geographic pole, perhaps something similar will apply to the waters North of the the Arctic coastlines.
