Two months to fluency? Not really - Romanian interview

  • How well can you learn a language from scratch in two months? I put in about 2 hours a day working on LingQ and listening on my mp3 player. Starting the second month I had about 5 hours a week of online discussions with Romanian tutors. It helps immensely if the language has a lot of common vocabulary with languages you already know, as was the case with Romanian. I loved Romania and intend to go back.

    Romanian is a truly beautiful language. My mother tongue is French and I also speak some Spanish, so there are commun roots there. But the slavic and other influences give Romanian quite a different flavour than most other Latin Languages.

    • @ploughable
      @ploughable 8 місяців тому +1

      There is very little slavic influence in some romanian words, but the pronouncing is very similar to many Italian dialects from Sicily, Como, Friuli or Sardegna 😉

      Actually,few thousands of years ago, the Slavic languages were specific for a pretty small area comparing with the living area of our ancestors, the Thracians, and so, it's more probably that the Slavic languages was influenced by the old Romanian (Thracian) language or , both by an older one.

    Hi Steve, I am a spanish student who i have been recently finishing an exchagnge program in Romania. It is true all you say about the friendliness and warmth of Romanian People. I am still amazed by the country. Most of them can speak English at a pretty advanced level, besides some other romance languages, so it is quite impressive you only spoke in Romanian at a good enough level as I can appreciate in the video for the short period of time invested. You are definitely inspirational!

      People that wants to drag you to stupidity mostly thinks like that... But people learning languages are pretty open minded generally
      You probably heard around you there's always those people saying negative things (like showoff, why would you do that and so on) at whatever you are doing that is related to something that is good (positive) whether it's learning or just trying to do a task properly .

      Having visited and traveled widely in Romania numerous times of the last 3 years, I have seen the good, the beautiful, and the desperate. All exist. Yes, I have met so many lovely people who have invited me into their lives, it is amazing and heartening. Still, at the poorer village level, opportunity and quality of life are severely limited. Poverty is profound. Education, infrastructure, health care deficient. The tragedy of the generations post 1989 is the lack of opportunity for both the under-educated and the well-educated, hence the Diaspora to wealthier EU nations for better jobs. As for being a "trash hole", nothing could be further from the truth. It is a beautiful country, rich in resource and human potential. I love Romania

    Wow, what a SMILE! Sorry Steve, I wasn't talking about you, but your smile is nice, too.
    I've become interested in learning Romanian because I like history, and Romanian history is fascinating, being that it seems somewhat enigmatic. Also, the idea that Romanian seems closer to Latin than most other languages appeals to my history interest, as well.
    Unfortunately, I'm not talented at learning languages - French is beautiful, but I never did well with it in high school or college. I've heard that Romanian is a bit more accessible for English speakers because the syntax is more similar. Don't know if that's true or not, but I think I'd like to try. Thanks for the video. I'm also looking at the Nico videos. I'm just starting out.

    I spent 150-200 hours on Romanian. I started Romanian April 10th when I bought Pimsleur, which I reviewed here in a video, April 13. Then I had pattern sentences and other content translated and recorded vi eLance, which I loaded up in LingQ.
    In all spent about 2-3 hours a day for 50 days,including LingQ, listening to mp3 player, and skype chats with tutors, before going to Vienna and Romania.
    I had from 3 to 8 hours per day of Romanian conversation during my three day stay in Romania.

    I think two months to fluency is possible (particularly with Romanian if you speak Italian or Dutch if you speak German), provided you spend it all in the country and talk in it at least 12 hrs a day.
    For what seems to be about 3-400 hrs of study, this is really quite impressive. People should really stop using amount of months or days or years and start talking about the number of hours people study/practice imo.

Also, the Romanian people in Steve's seemed really nice and friendly. This is one of the things I like about learning a new language, being able to communicate with more people and share ideas.

      Steve Kaufmann - lingosteve
      Thanks for your reply Steve.
      I still can't see Romanian listed. I went to the 'Join Us' page and it was listed in the drop-down box for joining, and I checked at the bottom of the page where it said which languages were available and Romanian wasn't listed. At the top left is the logo, and clicking on that takes me to the home page.
      Nico is a Romanian language tutor who has a couple of courses here on UA-cam - I've started with her 'Easy Peasy' course. I thought the woman in your video looked like her.

    • @Thelinguist
      @Thelinguist  10 років тому +1

      Carol Tresadern On the top left hand corner is the LingQ logo, beside that is a drop down list of languages. Ah, I am sorry, you have to click on "Beta languages" at the bottom to open up the non-supported languages, which includes Romanian. Sorry. Once you open a non-supported language it will always appear in the list. My mistake. Good luck.

    • @NormyTres
      @NormyTres 10 років тому

    Thank you for showing to the word how beauty Romanian language and Romanian women are. They will learn now Romanian is a Latin language (well Romania looks like from "Roman", so very Latin with some Slavic words synonyms like aer = vazduh, etc.). This is inspirational and motivates me more to learn Danish, as I live in DK and find hard to learn! This would be just the 4th language I can speak. Indeed, "brute force" memorization is not a good idea. I found Scandinavian languages very hard to read with very complex rules and exception like "af" can be read kind of "ow" or "e" (i.e. from "bed")in different context. I will look for some advice from you related to Scandinavian languages, as you are born here.

    Bravo lui Steve, care "mănâncă limbile pe pâine", dar un bravo și mai mare Georgianei, pentru inteligența cu care a abordat conversația. Este, cred, un bun pedagog.
    O singură mică scăpare a Georgianei, la 6.23 - "instead = în loc de" și nu "în ciuda".
    Am învățat de aici că este bine să nu întrerupi studentul pentru mici greșeli - dacă nu perturbă prea mult sensul - iar când intervii, trebuie să fii scurt și să vorbești clar și răspicat. Această calitate îi lipsește, pare-se - si nu pot să înțeleg de ce - occidentalului (neprofesionist): am făcut, în joacă, testul, cu zeci și zeci de locutori (mai ales de limbă franceză, la telefon, și femei)... Imposibil să-i faci să vorbească rar, mai mult de... trei secunde! :-D
