    Great lesson by Alex! He comes off as very approachable and likeable. He is a tremendously gifted guitarist and song writer. Rush gave us so much great music in over 40 years! The one chord he says he doesn’t know the name to is just and E major chord with the 3rd G# in the root E/G#. It is also interesting that he uses a G# major in one section instead of the E/G# chord, which no tab that I have seen gets right. The intro is also tricky but he shows you how to do it well!

I was always fascinated by this song as a kid with just how much it changes and crosses so many cultural boundaries. Over the years I have always purchased the "Official" TAB books so that the artist would get their part, however I have the same problem with them, many of them are not only not accurate but at times notated in an entirely different position that makes it impossible to play. Watching Alex play has enlightened me into how he gets his unique sound. Thank God for UA-cam!

    • @joshparks7692

      On that “note,” it looks to me like he’s playing the wrong ones on the run that goes into the reggae part. It starts with three D’s (third string 7th fret) on the studio version and tabs, and he ends it differently from the studio version too.

    • @streetworkoutnation6851
      @streetworkoutnation6851 4 місяці тому

      I don’t think Alex wrote the music down on tab. So it’s up to a random person to write it on the tab. So you either gotta trust Alex himself or the person who wrote it down. Same with Neil he never wrote down any drum parts so some sheet music it’s just straight up wrong

  • @davepaul8640

    A lesson straight from the horses mouth! Love it!
    What I noticed, for the intro, there’s the e note after the d note (3rd fret B strong). What made it easy for me to hit that e note was to roll my finger that’s fretted on the B string, 3rd fret, over the open e. To me, it didn’t sound right picking that e note, well feel right. Just be sure you don’t pull off the 3rd fret B string as you may gain the B note. This technique goes for all 3rd fret B string notes. (D note)
    For those who are struggling on the intro.

    • @mykemech
      @mykemech 4 роки тому +3

      He even skips the open E after the D notes, which confused me, but then he put them in at speed, which then vindicated me...lol

      @@mykemech I noticed that too, when he left the E out in the slow version it makes it seem much easier to play fast but it doesn't flow, it kind of stutters. And to me already at that time it, it was like, how i felt,... The bass bottom punch hardcore sound. This is what i wanted to do. Fast forward 35+ years later i went to music university and i took classical, learned to read notes and i am playing with orchestras throughout the world. Alex! I'm just like you - from the very beginning. The strings were one inch from the fretboard,
    the sound came out from my mouth instead of the guitar I had bought from my late, passed away, brother
    when I was 11 years old. My bro couldn't keep up the rythm, so he gave up and sold his xmas present.
    I found some iron string at the garage, so I turned this little Russian made (Sonya) guitar into a bass.
    This is how we differ. The first group I was in, I played drums. After a few months the other fellows found out,
    that I played guitar like Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow). But unfortunately we broke apart and didn't
    make any records.
    Now I'm five years closer to hundred years, owning 7 guitars, an old synthesizer (Yamaha SY-35), Yamaha electric drums.
    Some sort of a digital studio..... Nowadays I've been practising playin' bass guitar.
    Neil: definitely the best drummer - worldwide :)
    Geddy: The most talented bass player on the planet :)
    Alex: You are - like I said - phenomenal guitar player, an idol for many artists to come, Thank You! :) :) :)

    My guitar teacher was a huge Rush fan, 2 months into my weekly lessons he started teaching me Laville D Strangiatro from Exit stage Left. I never mastered the fast licks at the time but it was a great learning experience

    Alex is one of the most underated

    Legend in my book !!!!

      Well, I wouldn't say he's most underated. Of course he's not mainstream either. And he's also been a big influencer on many others like John Petrucci, for example, as John acknowledges it in another UA-cam video.

    At 18:00 He's talking about FM radio in Canada, which, at the time, played a large variety of music in long, uninterrupted segments, without a lot of advertising.

    I love that the 'Celtic' intro, when you hear it separate from the song and with him swinging along with it, it wouldn't go amiss from Spinal Tap's 'Stonehenge'. :D

    My belief is play it how you want, make it your own, have fun with it, as long as it sounds good and you like how it sounds. Especially the chords. But some of the parts like the intro, it does help to see how he plays that. It definitely helped me. Thanks Alex!!

    You Sir are absolutely Brilliant, Amazing and Awesome. I've always loved your music Truly Beautiful. I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and there only counter part Rush best two bands of all time no doubt best musicians of all time. Some friends of mine use to cover your songs and to see it live all the intricacies the master level of it all is such a blessing. I've never been much of a guitarist myself, but for sure I'll be better now. I don't think I've ever seen the artist himself teach they're material. Thank you so much for that. It adds to your legacy and showcases your kindness as a human being. Peace Brother 🙏 love y'all.

    What's actually awesome, is we listen to the originals of these awesome, polished, studio fettled tracks, played, on gear we can't afford, and then when we try playing it at home, it sounds shit. But Alex, playing here, with a largely clean and unaffected sound, sounds just the same😂, of course he can play the parts flawlessly, but it brings home, he's just a guy, who plays guitar, it's really humble of him to do this. Most primadonna players would have to hide behind a wall of rack fx. Nice one Alex.

    This riff, above all others for me at the time, was literally and figuratively electrifying. I couldn't make heads or tails of it and it was just so intoxicating to listen to, over and over again. I got close to figuring it out on my own eventually, but it simply doesn't get any better than to learn it from the mastermind himself. I am so grateful for this band and all they created.
