I've had mine for 18 years of backpacking, cycle touring and motorcycle trips. Still works great.
I bought one of these after watching your reviews, great stove that I take on all but my coldest trips.
Thanks for your reviews. I have purchased several items that you reviewed as your favorites and have only good things to say about them.
Your reviews have made my outdoor adventures so much better.
Thanks again.
I own that exact Optimus CRUX cook kit and ❤LOVE IT. I use the cook kit it comes with but more often I team it up with the STANLEY COMPACT COOK SET or the STANLEY TWO BOWL COOK SET when more cooking volume is needed. All of these options are perfect for use with the stove so I mix it up from time to time. That said, the complete kit as it is sold is super nice, non stick, and the heat exchanger works very well for uniform heating. The set is stable, reliable, easy to use, super compact and simmers exceedingly well. For the price I would consider it a steal. I'd put it up against any higher priced stove too. If I ever need to replace it I'd buy it again tomorrow, it's that good! Oh, btw, it is a great stove cook kit for on-the-boat kayak cooking. I take it everytime for all day fishing trips and Vespa Scooter camping trips.
love mine. used it on my last strike team deployment to boil water for coffee for some of the other firefighters in my camp. thanks for the great review
I love this stove. My go to stove fir years now...I've used mine in snow. The only difference for me (I kept the tank warm in between my down gear) was that it took a little longer to boil the water. Nice vid...
I've been using the light version of this stove for a few years now zero complaints very reliable would definitely recommend 👍
I like the design of the ‘arms’ as you can securely place smaller diameter pots. Also I like the fact that you have to slightly open the regulator in storage. This ensures the seals aren’t damaged.
Love this stove and cookset. The heat exchanger pot works well with my Trangia stove. Love optimus gear!
I've had this stove for years and I love it.
Luke, Optimus actually makes a windscreen that fits on the rim of the gas can and protects both the flame and most of the pot. It's a it heavy, but it works very well.
Thank you for letting me know that. I will have to check that out.
- Luke
So many words to say “I love this stove” and then he never turned it on to see the flame
The stove is great. Thanks for sharing and also for the outtakes
Hi Luke, You should look into the MSR Wind Burner Stove System, I warn you it is a little pricey , but it is an awesome stove, 100% windproof and perfect for extreme cold temperatures, this stove and the Optimus Crux stove are my absolute favorite stoves, and I normally take them both with me on backpacking trips. have a GREAT rest of the week! -Jake
I bought this stove after seeing your earlier reviews, Luke. Great stove! Thanks for the recommendation!
Sure thing Words!
I hope that you are well.
- Luke
when it's cold put an air activated hand warmer under the fuel tank.
I have never tried that one. It looks really good. Thanks for the review.
- Martin
An old episode but I am looking for kit for when I am working outside, this answers the question as to whether the Crux and gas canister would fit in the Toaks 750ml pot.
love your videos, and really loved your bloopers at the end lol have a good one
Luke,
Great video.
That stove is a great one and one I have used before. (I have several different stoves much like you.)
My go to stoves differ from yours because of my doing a lot of higher altitude and cold weather camping growing up. Because of this I always seem to fall back on either my Coleman Dual Fuel Monster or my Svea 123. Both are heavy but for me they are just what I need with being Idiot Proof as well as Weather Proof.

Luke, get a piece of Reflectix & make a Koozie for that cup/lid, whatever you heat on the stove, then place the cup into your Koozie & whatever is inside will stay HOT HOT. Titanium is a great conductor of heat, however, the downside is it dissipates heat quickly. The Koozie will slow down that heat dissipation process so you can enjoy your entire meal while it is HOT.
Optimus Crux Stove use it all the time camping and never had a problem with it, the best thing about it, is that it's very small and boils water very fast.
Looking forward to your favorite pack, Luke. But I'm guessing some gear categories might be like picking a favorite movie or book... tough choices!
I like how you have stowed it away inside the pot. When you're out there do you fish at all? Just wondering because in my system I just can't go w/out a frying pan. Haha
Awesome piece! Ordering one for sure.
I do like the stove since I have it for 5 years. Super lightweight super easy to use but I do find it is not so good in adjusting the output (I don’t really need the find adjustment anyway) and is slightly unstable compared to other stove I had because of its folding structure. Do you also have this kind of problem?
About a year ago, I bought an Etekcity stove for about $10. While it's probably nowhere near as nice, quality-wise, it does have a built-in piezo igniter, which I think is a brilliant addition to a stove like this, and I'm surprised that more companies don't have them.
Luke-can we expect more of this? I mean, your favorite gear? You have don't a lot of reviews over the years on many things...it would be nice to know what you deem as cream of the crop with all bushcraft/camping gear:) Thanks again buddy...... - Shane
yes, this is a new series according to the description
This is a series that I will be doing more of.
Take care Shane.
- Luke
I take mine to work everyday with the HE weekender cookset.
Example of heat regulation with the HE weekender set.
Boils water faster than you can ever imagine, 2cups in what seems like 2min!!
Too popping corn in the HE cookset!!
Don't try it in a titanium pot!!
Great review, but theres far cheaper identical stove heads.
The storage and packing is tight and space saving, i use a similar idea and pack even more. You should do a Budget review on these stoves and gas cannisters, especially refilling them at home.
Approximately how fast +/- is "super fast" (boiling time) ?? Many stoves take 5-7 minutes for 2 cups H2O.
Another great review...Thanks !
Beautiful video!!
How do you refill the gas containers? Or do you just buy new ones?
This is a great stove. I've use mine for power outages too. atb Luke
ATB to you too buddy.
- Luke
Thanks. Will it fit or screw onto other gas canisters?
Thanks for the review.
Sure think my friend.
- Luke
Great review, thanks.
30 min total burning time on 1 full tank of the small canister?... I am trying to get that precise info on canisters burning time if I use it for light weight hiking but need to know how long each canister will give as burning time since I think there are 3 sizes?... compared to my mint Coleman 1943 dual fuel #520 military single burner stove that has a 1 pint fuel capacity and will last 3 hrs burning full blast, I think is 15,000btu power beast, a bit on the heavy side for hiking (about 3lbs) excellent for camping witch I also intent to use , testing to heat up my tent using a terracotta pot to diffuse heat (in tent with no fly on top to vent out gases but a tarp 4 ft above the tent for rain or snow) and my co2 alarm just in case of course ... thank for your videos Luke.
im not in the market for a new stove just yet, but when i need to find a new one, i might try this one out.
What do you use at the moment?
- Luke
use a PRIMUS, classic trail stove. its bit bulky, but works well enough for me.
Can you tell me what do you do with the fuel canister once it is empty?
Is it true that the propane can leak? How should it be stored after using it the first time?
What do you think of the Primus stove Luke
using fingers before opening the optimus crux, THANK YOU
Great vid.. Thanks
Sure thing my friend.
- Luke
MORE FAVORITE GEAR!!!!
I bought this stove with the cookset about 2 years ago after seeing your review and I love it, too. Before that I had only used Trangia sets. But I haven't used anything else but the Crux since :-)
If I go out alone I usually want to go light and use freeze-dried meals, so I use the stove together with an 750 ml Esbit Titanium pot similar to your Toaks. Works perfect and fits nicely together.
You sold me! I've been looking for a good gas stove... Any recommendations for a cold weather option? I don't have any outdoor stoves right now and need something reliable and performs well and that I could pack a good amount of fuel for
I would run a head-to-head comparison with MSR. Look up both stoves and do some research. I am not as familiar with Optimus, but I know you can't go wrong w/ MSR products.
There's one on e-bay made in China that is a copy of the MSR. It only costs about $8 but if it breaks there is probably no manufacturer warranty.
Another great review Luke! Also just wanted to say i love the blooper bits at the end!
I have this stove with the cook set. My friends that have the more expensive jetboils always say my Optimus is better.
does the heat exchanger make a significant difference in boil time?
So, when it's cold and/or windy, dont use this stove??
👌🏿
Sorry! You are doing a review, but can’t light it because it is windy? So it isn’t good at all is what you are indicating, am I right?
I just use a fancy feast stove (or alcohol stove). It's the lightest stove you'll ever carry and it gets the job done. It looks like something a hobo would use but the bottom line is that it will boil your water.
Those are great stoves too, fun to make.
- Luke
My buddy that I hike with has one. Super fast boil with the cook set.
How are you doing Alex? - Luke
Doing good Luke. Will be better when I get to go hiking. My wife severely broke her wrist on Easter day so I've had to stay close since. She finally doing better and can actually drive now so the trails are gonna get hiked real soon.
thanks for the review, unfortunately I purchased a optimus stove and it had flaws. and optimus did nothing to help me, worst customer service. went with msr because they stand behind what they make and in the usa
And why would you want the head to tilt?
Anyone of you guys know where to buy an extra o-ring or the size/dimensions to a replacement? Nothing at home depot is an exact match.
do you ship to Canada?
cool.
Eh I’m cheap I changed over to Fancy Feast Cat Food Can Stove 😅
Nice, I love mine as well. Even my friends with jet boils like mine better and it heats up faster than the jet boil. The full cook set rocks.
I also take a set of MSR clip on legs to make it extra stable. That also helps it deal with uneven ground and I have never had an issue

Optimus Svea is white gas and very compact
This is similar to the optimus stove used by Harry Potter. The Horcrux stove.
hey that's my stove😂
We have great taste in gear!
