you messed it up when you didn't change x to y or any other letter, so now I have to know which x are you talking about ..

I think he misspoke. x is a great letter to use because x is in the domain of f. and w is a subset of the domain, so putting x in w is good. y would be a good letter to use for anything in the range of f. So we still are thinking of f(x) as equal to y, or f(W) as being in the range of f.
