Great song and a great singer in a much underrated show. (I had attended the pre-Broadway tryout here in Boston in '86.) Only negative...Headsets are a deal breaker for me !!!
This is probably one of the most terrifying and sad musical theatre songs ever written. That's meant as a compliment to Mr. Schwartz, but if I didn't know any better I would have never thought this was one of his.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor Well, but you're a countertenor. Do you also hate operatic arias when they're sung out of context? We all have our biases, but I think you have to admit that, objectively speaking, this is a great song.
This reworking of the book seems less effective than the Stratas performance. It all seems so contrived whilst the other one there was a plot adventure and yearning that fit the composition. Ragtime is such a befuddled mess and seemingly a late 20th C . mystery that nobody seems to be able to rework to it’s deserving success it should have .
One of the most naturally beautiful voices on Broadway. Exquisite.
chills--the material and Carolee. So underrated....both the show and her
shes so underrated
I just love her.
OMG, I have wanted to hear her sing this role since she did it! Thank you SO much for sharing!
this gave shivers! Amazing!

beautiful voice kind of has hints of Barbara Cook's voice
Anthony Smith Totally -her technique and approach are literally extract to Cooks vocal tone .Very odd but it happens .
WOW!!!!!

I know, right? This and "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime!
Actually, it's by Schwartz AND Charles Strouse. Schwartz wrote the lyrics; Strouse wrote the music.

Beautiful performance! Moving camera made it hard to watch.
Poor brass player at the end 😂

Ragtime is a completely different musical. This is Rags, written by Stephen Schwartz.
