i work at a pet store and i straight up tell people that all of the "hamster" cages we have are terrible (and so are pretty much all of the small animal cages) and i always show people tanks instead or tell them about bin cages but some people still try to argue with me bc they think the crittertrail cages are cuter 🙄 like im sorry but i didnt know you were buying a decoration i thought you were buying a pet and im not going to sell you this animal if i dont think you'll actually care for it properly
Brooke Renae I work at a petstore too. I straight up refuse sale of they wont get appropriate enclosures.
I worked I petco for about a mouth then quit beacuse I got wrote of for reafursing to see someone who wanted to put 3 hamsters in a crittertrail, then 2 days after I left they begged me to come back, apparently the guy came back with one of the hamster on the break of death from the other attacking it and the other had bits all over them, I didnt take the job back but I told them I would take the hamsters I felt so sorry for them..
Juju ́s Animals I'm really lucky that the particular store im at actually encourages us to deny sales to people if we dont think they should have the animal. and whenever we sell fish we have to ask the customer what size tank they have and what else is in the tank to make sure what they want will be a good choice for them. but i know a lot of other pet stores (even different locations of mine) dont make such a big deal of that and its really sad.
Juju ́s Animals not trying to be mean but U seem a bit young to work
If i did this at mine they would probably fire me. I try to tell them for research other cages than critter trails. But they don’t care, they just want something cute for their kids
I just got a hamster a week ago (named Gus aka Gusy Bear) and when I bought the 40 gallon breeder my fiancé felt personally victimized by the size. He insisted that I was being dramatic & that if I was getting a big tank that I could either get two hamsters or divide the tank. He believes that because Gus is small (he’s a Robo) his home should be too. I told him that I would hate to live in a closet and that I’m sure Gus would too. He still thinks it’s ridiculous no matter how much info I show him 🤷🏽♀️ as long as Gus is happy idc lol
I’m Mel yess! Gusy bear deserves the space! You are doing the right thing! 👏🏽
DEEZ NAILZ thank you 😊
sounds like you need a new fiancé
Why do we need to know this?
I don't know him but I hate him already.
I absolutely _hate_ it when I see people coming out of Petco with a Crittertrail and pine bedding!!!! Why would they not research how to get their pet before they get it?!?
lovelollipops 22 Because they probably don’t know any better and they think that the pet store employees know everything and that everything they sell for the animal are good for them.
And tv as well. They see tv hamsters running around in a typical Tube critter trail cage, and they think it's perfect!! It's advertised everywhere...
Lazy people
I know I always research before buying/adopting a any pet even if it’s a small pet like a fish, mouse or rabbit
I know when I first got my hamster, I did a lot of research on hamsters themselves but assumed the employee would help me find an appropriate cage- I was wrong. She told me a Crittertrail was the best cage for hamsters and I believed her and then found out the next day that she was SO wrong. I immediately made a bin cage that was quadruple the size
I hate seeing those small hamster cages in pet shops because people who don’t do much research are obviously going to buy them instead of getting a more appropriately sized cage. Pet shops need to stop selling them 😩😩
Your hamster is adorable by the way 😍
Marta Edits I work at a petsmart and I understand what your saying I always tend to recommend 4 or more cages for a single Syrian hamster, bin cages or even a 20 gallon tank
There should be a bit on the cage saying that those cages are for expanding the cage only and a hamster shouldn't live in just one of those cages
I live in a small town and we only have 1 good pet shop. And their bigger cage is a medium cage. It is 400$...
JAYZEE2407 Those cages aren’t even good if you have 4 of them, hamsters need a big open area. So it would only work if you had the big open area of 450 square inches and those as add ons.
Beebo u completely misunderstood what I said those small cages should be labelled as expansion cages only so ppl would be discouraged to get them for the hamsters to just live in
So... could the dots be called chameleon pox?
Screaming for this video. I try and tell everyone this. The minimum tank needed is 30-40 gallons with a ton of bedding. thank you for making this video- it’s going to inform a lot of misinformed people. Taylor dean with her mouse, she uses a cage and it makes me cringe. I know not everyone knows, but it’s so sad to see all the information floating around about their care. Mice and hamsters are very similar when it comes to space. Thank you!
How big is her mouse cage?
Kitty Jr go look also her cage is not that bad idk why she’s saying that
Mice should be in cages. Tanks are not good for them
🕳 incorrect. Use ventilation.
lindsey Smith you’re incorrect. Wtf
When I was 9 I got my first hamster. Luckily my family had an old 30 gallon tank that was pretty long and I ended up using that instead of buying one of the small cute cages. I wasn't perfect in caring for it, but now that I'm 26 I think back and I'm glad I was at least close in cage size even if I did some other things wrong.
So glad you made this video, so many people think just going to a pet store and buying a critter trail is okay :(
New content two days in a row 😍 get it girl so proud of your drive and determination! You are gonna go far 💕
My first hamster had a 40 gallon tank with around 650 inches of floor space. ☺️
I have no hamsters... no intent to buy one, but here I am getting informed lol. Thank you for the great content :)
Elizabeth Dre you can try keep because hamster is awesome
I don’t even live in a country where we can have hamsters, yet here I am
MyLife the truth is we don't have hamster in my country i don't no Hu's the person brought her but thank for them cos i learned how to share my time and i learned how to give love if I'm not meet my hamster maybe I'm still a damn it selfish rockers still doing stupid things. but every things is changes now most of all i meet god thank to that little creature and all living creature in this planet is awesome..
I LOVE MY DIY CAGE! I have multiple hamsters, that live in bin cages, aquariums, and the holy grail... the diy cage. It's over 1200 square inches and is very heavy because it's made out of glass. I got the glass at a thrift store, there were meant to be shelves, and they were only 25 cents each. But my syrian that lives in it is a little greedy so I'm building it a 4 foot by 4 foot cage😁.
Dang did you build it yet?
I went to pets at home the other day and there cages were incredibly large I couldn’t find a small cage in sight I was so impressed that they care about the wellbeing of there animals (my pets at home at least) ☺️💘💘
my hamster is always up and about during the day lol. i've had 3 hamsters in my life and cupid is the only one that is always out around the day lol. hes in an 40 gallon and loves that cage lol.
My hamster peach is always up during the day but my other hamster sushi wont get up till 1 in the morning most days.
I love your speech because I can easily understand it as a foreign person. Amazing video!!!
I used one of those small wire cages from Walmart for the longest times because my parents thought “ small animal=small cage “
Wow pumpkin is just a little magical creature, so fluffy and cute. What a shame hamsters are illegal in my country ( Australia)
Chloe Makesunrelatedvideos THIS IS NOT THAT BAD, LESS HAMSTERS WILL BE PUT IN BAD CARE BY BRAT KIDS AND IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTS
Magical balls of floof are illegal in your country?!
Awww thats sad
Wait so your saying adorable animals like hamsters are not aloud!?
@@amymbower because like many other exotic pets they’re illegal to protect our native wildlife. Yet they still allow outdoor cats, rabbits and goldfish which are greater threats than any hamster.
I am so so excited! For my birthday I will be saving up all my money and buying a hamster, this video was so so helpful and so i took your advice and I am now going to use a fish tank and convert it into a hamster cage. Using your advice I have made sure to look for the perfect one! The fish tank I am going to be purchasing is over 3000 square inches. I just wanted to say that your advice has helped me a lot and thank you. Your videos are amazing and the best channel award in my books must go to YOU!
Do you know about the new cage that kaytee is producing? If you didn't it's really big and nice especially for the larger hamsters they are also producing bigger tubes for the larger species.
Mudkip Games258 Yeah I heard about it!! I’m excited to see it hit stores. Once it does, id like to get it and do a review on it :)
Emma Lynne Sampson yess!♥️
This is a great video! Thank you for giving your opinions and info on hamster cages
When i got my first hamster (a dwarf)All the info i had came out of a single book i bought at petsmart, which never told me about hibernation. I went away to scout camp, my bedroom got cold and my hamster was lonely from the lack of handling. When i came home she was asleep and i mistaked her for dead. So she got buried. I was very young. RIP Whiskers.
If she was hibernating, she was because of low temperature. When she was buried she was put in the ground, witch also has a low temperature. So she just passed in her sleep. At least she didn’t have a painfull passing 😉
I have a huge cage ikea detolf and my hamster loves it
Holy cow this video is packed full of correct information!!
Lovely video!! Nice work 👍
Pumpkin is so cute omg
a 113 quart storage bin from walmart is around $20! 100 quart: about $15 (both are around 600 square inches!) its so cheap to make a bin cage
Thank you!!! This may help people keep their hamsters happy and healthy!
I'm so glad that I'm actually doing almost all the stuff right (My cage is 2 1/2 inches too small) also, my hamster refuses to eat any live or dead bugs, so what else is good for them in substitute
mealworms. scrambled or hardboiled eggs are great too. go check out erinsanimal, its a great channel with alot of informations also the bare minimum is not the best so...KEEP UPGRADING AND UPGRADING THE BIGGER THE BETTER !!!!!AYYYYY:)
This is a great video! Another point I'd like to add is most of those plastic tunnels that you can get for hamster cages are way too small for Syrian hamsters. The majority of times they are only large enough for dwarf hamster species and syrians can get stuck in them. It's better to just get a very deep bin cage or a glass aquarium and make sure they have enough substrate to burrow their own tunnels. Plastic tunnels are not a substitute for good old-fashioned burrowing
MintChocolate yes!💯👏🏽
bad cages for rats make amazing hamster cages with the correct bar spacing
Not true
Not always true!!
Great video, you couldnt had said anything better, wish every hamster owner would know these things, saidly they dont that why we need to spread the word, everytime I go to petco/petsmart and see people buying hamsters I always go over and give them tips and show them cages that can work for them, I have kept alot of hamster from ending up in small cages, I hope everyone that goes to a pet store dose this to!
My older sister who is leaving for work in a year is getting a hamster, because I will be the caretaker when she is gone I am doing research. Great video! I really appreciate it!!!!!!!!!
It was so funny seeing pumkin walking to the end of the bed behind you XD little squirrel!!
I have a critter trail and try to convince my mom that my Syrian hamster (one of the bigger breeds of hamsters no less!) needs at least 450 square ft. and she says “oh but cliff (my hamster) is just a small animal” and I say but that doesn’t mean anything they need exercise and a good amount of space for them to roam around
Im sure you know but Hamsters commonly fall to their death. They don’t have depth perception with height so just be careful with him on your bed!
This is sooooo great thank you for clearing up the confusions!
This video is so old now lol but I like watching old videos too now since I only became super animal crazy about 4 months ago. I have always loved animals but only ever had cats as a kid. Almost 17 now and I have my 2 cats, 8 gerbils and 4 hamsters. Right now my dwarfs (one Robo, one Russian) share a detolf that’s been split in half. I have the same critter nation type cage as you have Pumpkin and Spice in, for my Syrians Eleanor and Cinnamon, I am in love with it. I didn’t love converting it so it was hamster appropriate but since I’ve actually put my girls in it, I’ve been so happy I decided to get it.Thank you for sharing that cage with the internet I stg it’s my favourite cage out of all the ones I’ve seen. I only had one of my Syrians before my current cage set up and had her in the detolf before but honestly I thought that was too small for a Syrian and she’s still young but she’s already a pretty big girl I’d defiantly recommend over 1000 square inches for Syrians and 500 for dwarfs seems okay personally but I might upgrade my little girls and get another detolf eventually so they have their own too☺️
every russian dwarf hamster i ever owned was nasty when you tried to take it out, but once i had it out it was fine. however my syrian hamster was never snappy when being taken out of the enclosure
My hamster is over 2 years old she is loved but HATES ME she will not let me hold her I have tried to train her but she just would not,I change her bedding every 1-2 months (she doesn’t pee much so it’s ok) she’s in a 40 gallon breeder and she loves it I am going to be SOOO sad when she passes
Gwendalynn Alvarado Some hamsters can never be tamed. But you can try to put a few paper towels in her cage after rubbing them on yourself. This will make her get used to your smell. And she can use them as nesting material. After that you can try to make her take her favorite treat from two of your fingers. After a few days /a week of doing that, you can try to make her take a treat from your hand. Try to practice lifting in a cup with a handle. Put a treat in it, and lift it when she is inside. Good Luck 🤗
Kaylie Jakobsen thank you I will try the paper towel tonight ☺️
I just got my hamster and youre and other peoples videos really helped me my hamster has now a bin cage and a big wheel and alot of stuff and ALOT of bedding😂
When I was about 5 I really wanted a hamster so for Christmas I got one I named her snowflake and she had a very small cage she lived for 4 years I didn’t know they needed a big cage at the time but luckily I would let her roam around my room everyday
I got the ikea detolf let me say I LOVE the space but its not perfect😬
Im 12 and i have a hamster but i watched soooo many yt videos before getting one so i did research i love animals so much i want to be a zoologist when im older i got a bin cage for 10$ that is big enough and people are out there paying 50$ for a tiny little cage haha
Love you, your animals, and your channel😊
I’m still technically a kid so,I’m getting a hamster in like a week and,I have a family Chihuahua :))
i love you and i’m so proud of you!
Is it okay if you have a small cage and a bin cage and you put them together Because my hamster only sleeps in a small cage and plays and gets exercise in the big cage but he rest in the big cage
Same here about getting a hamster really late to the game I got my first ever hamster at 14 which I’m still surprised my mom even let me have one because she used to be so against it. Anyways happy I didn’t get one as a kid because I would have not researched properly and I would have bought a petstore cage instead. Happy my mom said no before because now I’m more knowledgeable and my hamster lives in a 105 quart bin cage and when she gets bigger I might upgrade to a 40 gallon or a 200 quart bin cage
Your hamster is absolutely adorable 😍💕 its so curious!
I bought my cage from Ikea closet. It's a basic wood closet and when you lay it down its the size of 128x60x40 cm for my Syrian hamster.
YOUR HASTER IS SO CUTE!!!
I just bought my first hamster at 27 😂 I haven’t held her because I’m afraid she’ll bite, has pumpkin ever bit you?
I do own a hamster, as you can see from my picture, and I am considered a kid. My parents bought me a hamster after I did a ton of research. If the hamster is on good care then I don’t think age of the caretaker matters that much. ( yes I am the primary care giver of peanut)
i had a hamster that just died a week ago and i had her in one of those crittertrail cages she lived for like 2 years i know there incredible active cuz im a night owl i want a bigger cage or a glass one for the new one im gonna get tomorrow but with the big storage bin i wouldnt be able to use that cuz my last 2 hamsters always bit through plastic
I feel horrible because my hamste moka has 440sq inches but she does have climbing space making in about 460 sq inches.... is that okay (i'm trying to go bigger
What about the cages that are typically 40-50 dollars, and have the two levels? The floor is about twice the size of the cage you showed and the beginning, and has some other things (like the two levels) included. Would that be okay for a normal sized hamster?
I don’t have the space to create something overly large and any fish tanks are either much too expensive or aren’t big.
the bottom space still needs to reach the minimum of 450 square inches. leveled cages aren't usually ideal either as hamsters have no depth perception and can hurt themselves falling from heights.
Emma Lynne Sampson I did more research right after I originally wrote this and realized it was a bad idea. But thank you for answering my question anyway
I have the savic hamster plaza with 12 inch wheel, various chew toys, deep paper bedding, plenty of protein in diet and she still chews bars of cage 🤦 😂
it can be just out of habit, but it can cause a bunch of problems like irregular teeth growth and injured top of snoout if it rubbing on the bar above it, you can just rub a small amount of lemon on it, dont worry its safe, your hamster will soon learn that if they chew the bars they will get an unpleasant taste so they will stop chewing them
@@alicjawojcik5003 THANK YOU!!!!!
@@molly42006 you're welcome:)
I’m 12 but do you think if I do lots of reasearch it is ok for me to get one
As long as you do research and can afford all the supplies!
Emma Lynne Sampson hi so I was wondering if this was big enough www.target.com/p/iris-buckle-down-plastic-storage-bin/-/A-52641328
I don't think that bin is big enough. Here is a link to a suitable and cheaper option: www.homedepot.com/p/Sterilite-106-Qt-Latching-Storage-Box-14998004/206721484
I just got my hamster! I love him so much! I’m trying to get closer to him and able to hold him on my hand
Such a great video. So informative!!
By any chance do you have a link to a cage that’s big and enough for 50 dollars or less
id recommend looking up DIY bin cages! theres lots of tutorials on youtube, and they can typically be made for around $20! Victoria Rachel has a good bin cage tutorial!
On zooplus the zoo zone 2
I actually turning my old shelf into a 3 story hamster cage!
My argument for small cages:
If you were a toddler and lived in a closet you would be sad. Same for hamsters.
Not common in australia, don't know anyone who's ever owned one as it's illegal to import them over here, as well as gerbils, to protect the local wildlife. i've never actually seen one in real life lol
I have a question so when you go out for 1,2 or 3 hours can you leave your hamster in its cage with food and water?
Of course. They're not like dogs and cats.
The second best pet I've ever had was a black bear hamster named Skippy. The best pet I've ever had was a standard poodle named Jenni.
I’m thinking of getting a hamster and I already have a bearded dragon that I am about to move to a bigger cage at the moment he has a 40 gallon (he is a baby) I’m thinking of using that for my hamster and when I’m home putting up a play pin around a big area and letting him run around do y’all think this will be okay (I really just want to give him the best life so please tell me the hard truth on whether or not it’s ok)
Buying a hamster so excited!!
If you do have mesh/wire wheels and can’t afford a solid wheel, for the meantime you can take card board and put it on the inside of the wheel so it’s a solid wheel. (Make sure this isn’t a permanent solution this could probably last you a month or so)
okay so i have a situation... my brother gave me his robo dwarf hamster because he didn’t have time for it and he’s had it for almost 5 months now! but he never played with it or anything so it’s terrified of EVERYTHING you can’t even make a kissy sound because it’ll fly into its hideout!! you can’t pass by it’s cage either cause it freaks out!! i have it in a 40 gallon breeder which it is terrified of! it’s terrified of being outside her hideout ( i have the tank full of hideouts and tunnels so it can hide) i’m thinking of getting a 20 gallon long because i think it’ll be more comfortable in a smaller tank ! please tell me if keeping it in a smaller tank would help it be more comfortable (: thank you so much !!
alex tostado have you tried a bin cage before? Sometimes bins can make them feel more secure since it’s not completely transparent :)
Great video, Emma! 👍🏻
Woo-hoo! I got the 800th like in. Seriously thank you though. I got a hamster for my birthday and she's in one of those small starter cages. I know now to fix that promptly. ☺
Yes yes yes & yes! Thank you for making this💯!
The first hamster cage u showm i got that but I upgraded him for a 40 gallon I put in in for about a week bc I was waiting for the 40 gallom to come in
I use an extra bin for a temporary cage when I clean my hampsters cage It is exactly 450 in.²
Seeing the Petsmart cages is just sad. I did have a hamster when i was 5 but i don't remember much about it except having to give it away less than a year later because we moved to Taiwan for my mom's job (we didn't know before). I was crying and my dad told me to shut up. Also, his name was Blueberry.
I'm getting a hamster next month. He is at the humane society and I'm getting him set up before i take him home. He is a senior hammy and he is adorable! I'm buying a 200 quart bin for him. ❤
Not sure why I'm watching this, considering hamsters aren't sold in my country at all, but a great video nonetheless. Keep it up!
I went to a pet store and saw a “panda hamster”. He was really cute so I decided to get him 3 days after. Before that I was looking at cages and I didn’t know that they were absolutely way too SMALL. I didn’t get tho (good thing). They were mostly starter kit with a small wheel(4in) which looked to small since he was a pretty big Syrian hamster 🐹. On the second day, I did a whole lot of research (I still do a lot still) and I found out about the type of wheel, cages, foods, etc. Like you mentioned about the mesh wheels, I some some at the store I got him. They looked terrible before I even researched anything. Right now I currently have a bin cage and I’m trying to train him now :) thx for this super helpful video 🐹💗
Nadz2007 I love it when people do research on the animals they care for. I got my first hamster in the beginning of December, and he is so happy. He has a billy xl cage but build with a double height. (Erin’s animals made the original) He has almost to much bedding and only wooden/reptile toys. He has a 8/9 inch wooden wheel with cork on the inside. And lots of sand of course. He also has 22 jars with different kinds of seeds, nuts, herbs, dried insects, mixes, chews and more. I really think my little dwarf has a great life 🤗
Is a 55 gallon tank suitable for my Syrian hamster??
I think, yes
measure the lenght and wide of the cage convert into inches and multipli them with eachother and make sure its over the BARE MINIMUM 450 square inches. but then again. THE BIGGER THE BETTER hopes this helps
I LOVE UR VIDS AND UR HAMSTERS R SOOOOO CUTE, I HAVE A DWARF NAMED MILLIE AND A LONG HAIRED SYRIAN NAMED FINN!
Chris Mac stranger things fam unite!!!!!!!! 😊
YYYYYAAAAAASSSS
I find it so cruel that pet stores sell the cages they do and act like it is acceptable. Systematic abuse.
How do I get my Hamster to stop chewing on it’s cage? Is it Normal for Hamsters to chew on cages? Is it bad for Hamsters to chew on cages?
bar chewing is usually a sign of stress. is your cage large enough? the minimum is 450 square inches
I have an old Guinea pig cage, it is wire and the said it was a guinea pig cage, can I put my hamster in that
how big is the wire spacing? usually guinea pig cages have 1" wire spacing, which a hamster can escape from
Im entering college and would like a syrian hamster for my first. Do you recommend I get it before or after school starts??
Before :)
I really don’t see how hamsters would be a good kids pet... I always found that so weird
When I first got my hamster as a present she was in a rotastak it looked too small for a Syrian for definite and the wheel was making her back bend so I asked for my friends cage and connected the 2 cages up after I'd done some research and she ended up with lots more room but it still wasn't enough but my mum said it was so I wasn't allowed to get anymore
Pumpkin is adorable ♥️
You animal are cool and you channel is amazing 😉 keep it up you rock
I have a 105 qt bin is this to small?
if you cant give your hamster 5 inches around there whole cage you can do a dig box or tower or just do a secion in your hamsters cage that has 5 in
I'm gonna get a hamster in 2 weeks ! also can we just appreciate your hamster just sniffing that laptop for the whole video ?
Thank you for making this video it was vary help full
hey guys, do any of you know if live or dried meal worms are better for them?
If I want to give my hamster a flying saucer should I still keep the wheel ? Also I love your videos 😍😍😍
Charlie Chip i think you should just keep one wheel. flying saucer is ALSO a wheel. ☺.
I used to have a hamster when I was 5 or 6 and his name was boy friend. He died and I never wanted to get a hamster ever again. And my mom said that I got allergies from it.
,, I think my cage is big enough because it has another space space and it has 6 layers in it's like add together by like Steps so I think my old one had like tubes going through and that annoys me because sometimes I am to get through couldn't get through time to move it with the time
shelley nash no. that does not count as floor space. tubes and level does not count as floor space! But a tube over 5 inches in radius will. tho its not the best option.
Can I make a 110 quart bin cage and attach one of those small cages? Or are those critter trail tunnels to small for Syrians?
Your hammy is super cute!
i have always wanted a hamster but my perants say because we have 2 dogs and 3 cats i can not get one so i am tring to get some reasearch to see if i can pay for it my self and if it can have expenseve health issuse even if i do take good care of it if you have any thing that can help me or any websites please tell me thank you. Have a nice day God bless
Is a 20 gallon aquarium good or not
20 gallons does not meet the minimum requirement of 450 square inches so it's too small
Atleast 40 gallons
I used petstore hamster cages aswell, but i’m that kind of person who doesn’t think thats enough, so what i did was... i bought three cages and sll connected them with tubes and my hamster seemed to love it😋
Indy Duinmeijer keep
In mind for the future that cages like that still aren’t suitable! It’s okay to connect cages together, but if you do that you still need at least one cages to be 450 square inches
Emma Lynne Sampson thanks for the tips!❤️
