    Oh dear, poor old Brookie. I mean, you can't say that they didn't make an effort to try and revive it and get those ratings back on top. But despite the OTT dramatics and stunts, it wasn't nearly enough. They were just wildly throwing every cliched quick-fix at it; guns, gangsters, explosions. It needed much deeper attention. Brookside's historic strengths lay in realism, character driven plots, and challenging storylines which tested your morals and opinions. Sadly, this contained none of that. Just some random blokes waving guns around. What it really needed, was for Channel 4 to ease the pressure and give it a nice easy two years to rebuild from the ground up. But time is money, and the clock was ticking. As much as I loved Brookside at its peak, I do think it had just about come to the end of its natural life by this point. I'm kind of glad that it ended without it being dragged out for way too long. Despite its heavy decline during the final four or five years, it's very fondly remembered for the majority of its run being rock solid and one of the greatest shows ever during its peak. I miss it, but I'd rather feel that way than I do about something like Big Brother, which I once loved but has now been dragged on so ludicrously far that I'll be glad to see the permanent back of it. And with the recent sad death of Dean Sullivan it's game over, as the kids say. Without the possible return of Jimmy Corkhill, it's the end of an era.

      By this point, it was too far past its best. It was on the ropes for years, as by late 1998, the cracks began to show. The creative team clearly didn't put in enough effort, which led to channel 4 cutting the budget. It became a show where the viewers no longer cared about the characters, and it was catering towards a younger audience. And Hollyoaks already fitted that criteria.
      Brookside's decline was also caused by its own success. How many times did a building explode, how many guns got waved around, and have these aspirations of being a gangster movie. When guns start getting involved, it becomes into lazy writing territory. But then again. It wasn't the sensationlistic storylines and violence that's what put me off. It just became boring.

      @@Onmysheet I entirely agree, spot on. I stopped watching in early 1999, purely because I'd become bored by it. The stories just went around in circles, nothing seemed to be going anywhere. The Nikki Shadwick drug spiking story felt like it went on for an eternity. Similarly, the Jacqui Dixon surrogacy story was tedious as hell because you could see exactly where it was heading right from the off, then you had to sit through it all playing out through nine very long real-time months of pregnancy, then drag on endlessly once the baby had been born.
      I just wanted those two particular stories to abruptly end so badly, and they obviously weren't going to so I started to skip weeks of episodes to re-join it when it had hopefully picked up a bit. But every time I dipped back in, it felt like I was watching the same episode over and over. Eventually, I stopped dipping in completely. The Brookside ship had unfortunately sailed for me, I was done with it. I wanted to still like it, but I just didn't any more.

    • @Onmysheet
      @Onmysheet День тому

      @97channel The Nikki Shadwick storyline I remember going on for a long time, and the reveal of the rapist wasn't satisfactory for the viewers. Then we get Tim and Emily pulling school pranks on the neighbours, then when caught, they go on the run. Were we supposed to care? The ill treatment of the viewers' favourite character Sinbad by painting him as a pedophile was done in bad taste.
      By the millennium, the public was beginning to be interested in glam culture, like dance music and tacky clothing fashion. Brookside decided to follow that trend, and it was all downhill from there.
      And I won't get started on it aspiring to be a gangster flick.

    • @97channel

      @@Onmysheet During the gangster era, everything in the entire world revolved around Lindsey Corkhill. I remember when Ron Dixon caused the gas explosion, the story had no natural involvement of Lindsey yet there she was, shoehorned right into the centre of the action because Our Kylie was missing and feared to be caught up in the accident. The producers and writers seriously misjudged the audiences emotional connection to Our Kylie, nobody cared at all.
      Brookside Unfinished Business is one of the worst things I've ever seen. And the two video releases which centred around Lindsey Corkhill were embarrassingly shonky.
      By the end, Brookside had become Hollyoaks. I particularly hated the incidental music during scenes, and the attempts at cinematic style camerawork. Some of the camerawork was actually quite impressive, to be fair. But it just didn't suit Brookside.

    This was where Brookside became a total joke. The crappy incidental music, flashbacks and slow-mo scenes turned it into a trashy version of Hollyoaks. And the really sad thing is, Hollyoaks just became this on steroids over 10 years later.
    They could have done this so much better without any of the supposedly "dramatic" effects.
