Easy DIY Spawning Mops

  • HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SPAWNING MOPS:
    1. Buy some acrylic yarn. You can choose any color you'd like, but keep in mind two things. First, eggs will be much easier to see on darker yarn; and second, some people find that fish spawn more readily on green colored yarn. For this project, you will also need scissors, tape, cork bottle stoppers, and a hardcover book that is about as tall as the tank you're going to use the spawning mops in.
    2. Cut off a length of yarn and lay it horizontally across the book, near the top. Use a couple pieces of tape to hold it in place while you work.
    3. Begin winding the yarn vertically around the book. Go around about 100 times. You can do fewer or more times depending on how thick you want your mop to be.
    4. Using the piece of yarn that was laid horizontally across the book, tie a knot at the top.
    5. Then take your scissors and cut the yarn at the bottom of the book.
    6. Take a cork, place it in the middle of your mop, and fold the mop in half to completely cover the cork. Then, while holding the top tight with one hand, tie a length of yarn around it to keep the cork held securely in place.
    7. Boil some water in a large pot. Once it has reached a rolling boil, remove it from heat and soak your spawning mop in the hot water for about 15 minutes. Then rinse it off in cool water, and it's ready to use!

    When tying the cork in, I would just use a zip tie. They survive the boiling for sterilization just fine, and it's a LOT easier than tying a knot.

    I put one in my tank for guppy fry to hide in. I made mine from cotton string. I might try putting one with a weight in it so it looks more plant like and provides a hiding place near the bottom.

    Very informative! I have some White Clouds and I don't think the female is comfortable laying her eggs on my Melon Sword or Chain Sword plants, so maybe she'll prefer one of these yarn mops.
    On a side note, do you think shrimp will utilize a spawning mop as well?

    • @DJGamer-in7fn
      @DJGamer-in7fn 6 років тому +1

      Kyler Carson depends on how close your filter is and what filter you have and how big your tank is

    • @XcZuNiTy
      @XcZuNiTy 6 років тому +1

      Short answer is no you don't. Most fish when they lay eggs there is a natural sticky adhesive if you will, that allows the eggs to stick to most surfaces so no need to worry. My angelfish lay eggs on the filter intake all the time and they don't get sucked up at all.

    • @carlamartinez6722
      @carlamartinez6722 6 років тому

      Kyler Carson yes

    • @oceanti6791
      @oceanti6791 6 років тому +2

      I got a guard for the filter intake so no eggs or babies get sucked up just make sure the flow isn't too powerful for the babies when they hatch. Or get a sponge filter. Even though your comment is from 3 years ago 🙃
