- Spawning Mops are often used in Aquarium Fish Breeding for many reasons. They’re easily available, easy to sanitize, and easy to move. Many egg laying fish will choose to lay eggs in the mop, which allows you to pull the mop and let the fry raise up in another tank, or give the fry enough cover to survive. Today, I show you how to make one!

This is super smart. And I'm inspired now, I have so many breeding tanks going and no where near enough plants reproducing, since I just recently started producing more plants. This will be a nice thing to use during my wait
Seems like you could use a suction cup that has zip ties to keep it in one spot in the tank.

I’m curious what affect the dye or chemicals in the yarn may have on the water.
Apparently 100% acrylic has 0 risk but i’m still hesitant
Just wash it in clean drinking water no soap ofc and it will be fine if you use tap you could be putting a lil chlorine in the water or other stuff ❤

Acrylic is the best yarn to use. It doesn't break down and in my opinion, cork is the best for floating and fish safe.

You mentioned that you use acrylic yarn to make spawning mop is there any preparation to make it fishsafe?
What do you do before adding it to fishes?
Nope! 100% safe to just toss in. Some people boil the Natural fibers cause the dies can sometimes get into the water, I don't have that issue with acrylic or polyester.

My only problem is that the fry can swim out if there is enough water but when you have eggs and move them to another grow out tank you have to make sure there is enough water to replicate the look. You can't fill a mop with eggs and leave it on its side in a tank with less water, the fry can't push aside yarn and cannot free themselves. Since Medaka egg are from a top water fish I'm making the smaller scour pad and pool noodle combo for my tanks. I'm looking at a Rubbermaid 300 gallon stock tank for $298.00 and it could use both types of mops. I came here to see if you left a link for the yarn, I just want to know what works.

I made the spawning mop, but my yarn doesn’t sink. Its 100% acrylic. I even added a plant weight and the mop reversed itself with the yarn standing up like vallisneria 😂 Any suggestions to get it to sink? 😂

Why would they make so many? Is it that they break down a lot or just that they have an ever growing aquarium collection?

Should be OK along as same water conditions thier would be no reason for it to affect the eggs

nope it just helps you see the eggs better it could be red but white would make the eggs invisible

I bought acrylic yarn and used a ping pong ball. The yarn that is supposed to hang down, floats. Is that normal?
The same happened here , we’re not sure , it could be to the weight and type of acrylic wool
Update, if you squeeze out all the air it should be fine
